🏈 The Good, The Bad and The Ugly vs Vandy

Good- The run game took another step today... it's getting to where it needs to be. And IMO, they left some stuff on the table. Jam Miller and Kevin Riley both ran hard though and it's nice to see UA with a 100 yard rusher again (that isn't a QB) for the first time in a while.

On that note, a healthy does of Make Their Ass Quit was dished out on Bama's late 4th quarter drive with 10 rushes in a row to set up the game clinching FG.

Ty Simpson had another good day for the most part, but he is so good about keeping his eyes up field when he's scrambling and avoiding the rush, then delivering a strike on the run. Raelly, really impressed with his improvement and growth. That said, he's gotta throw it away some... can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit on every play.

Bama's 2 minute (which was more like a 70 second) drive to end the first half was a thing of beauty. No timeouts, but Simpson was in full control of a situation where it just felt like Bama had to score a TD. He ran that like a pro.

The defense, yes, the defense played well today (overall). Sketchy early, but that was almost expected against this Vandy team. They adjusted well and gave the offense plenty of chances to put the game away in the 2nd half. Vandy has been a 2nd half team this year and today, they got nothing. I shudder to think of some of the comments early on in the game thread, but hopefully, most fans will have enough pride and self respect to admit that the defense played pretty well today.

Justin Jefferson was all over the place. He had the game I was expecting Bray Hubbard to have. Kelby Collins, Yhonzae Pierre, Edric Hill, LT Overton, and London Simmons also made some plays up front from what I saw.

Jefferson's strip of Pavia inside the 10 was massive! Without that, Bama is down 10-0 or 14-0... either way, not great. But that play put a little life into the team and stopped the Vandy momentum. I'd imagine it also got into Pavia's head a bit because he wasn't really the same after that.

Good on Conor Talty to bounce back after that early miss and nail the rest of his FG tries. It was nearly the difference in the game.

Happy to see Bama score on that final 4th down play... Vandy wants to call worthless timeouts, good. Put 7 more on them. Or as Pavia would say, "so it won't be close."

Bad- I didn't love that early 4th down call on the 1st drive of the game but I think the TD was there, Simpson just threw to the wrong guy. Either he was tricked by coverage or had his mind made up too early.... regardless, it was a dud.

More on that note... the offense uncharacteristically fizzled out near (and in) the redzone today. That has been a strength of this offense, but too many self inflicted wounds in that area today. Some I think were on Grubb, some on Simpson and lack of execution. But Bama had chances to put 7's on the board and walked away with either 0 or 3, way too often.

Ugly- The referee Gautreaux and his crew throw holding flags like candy at a kid's parade. Ridiculous how many they throw and oftentimes, there's no holding involved whatsoever. Then, today anyway, they missed some obvious ones. I don't like commenting and complaining much on officials. we know what we are getting usually, but it's frustrating. Eagle eyed on one play, blind on the next. Zero consistency in anything they do from play to play or even from crew to crew.

Those back to back option run calls by Bama in the 2nd. I didn't mind the first one, but Vandy wasn't the least bit fooled. Grubb obviously thought something was there. Tuned out it wasn't and it nearly killed a promising drive.

Today, unlike last year in Nashville, it was Vandy's players that lost their cool near the end of the game.

RTR!

and watch how they respond next week.

Good-running game, timely defensive plays, shut them out in second half.

Bad-TY holding ball taking sacks, #2 drop at critical time near goal. He may be a front runner.

Ugly-1st half defense.

Good - Ty played well for the most part. I'm sure he'll be coached up to throw the ball away instead of eating a big loss in the red zone. Running game was much improved, so the OL had a terrific day. The defense in the second half was much improved. Forced turnovers...

Bad - Left too many points on the field with failed trips in the redone. For me, there were some head scratching play calls in the red zone as well.

Ugly - we still haven't stopped the Vandy shuffle pass. (I was really surprised that they didn't run it but a couple of times.)

Good. Ho bout that crowd. Affected game big time. ...ty....RBs....

Bad.... still dropping passes that shouldn't be dropped....
Vandy practice shovel passes in pre game warm up...a lot
Getur head outta ur butts D coaches.

Ugly.....no call on targeting. Bullshit. What an awful no call

Good: Yes, Ty has times where he tries to do too much but he just threw for 341 yards and does have a knack for getting us in the right plays with the audibles.

Bad: Blitzing from 20 yards away from the LOS.

Ugly: Penn State....period. Sports media about as bad as the news media on hyping bullshit.

Good- W and run game showed some good improvement. Enjoyed seeing Proctor with another carry!
Bad- early run game fits. 2 runs = 90+ yards and a TD.
Ugly- thought Grubb got away from the run in the 3rd quarter. Jam had 2 touches in the 3rd and we seemed to rely too much on Simpson.
