šŸˆ The Good, The Bad and The Ugly vs. LSU

IMO, Ty's biggest issue right now is the lack of run game is putting Bama behind the chains early and he's pressing and putting too much pressure on himself. It's like watching a hitter in baseball who feel like he has to hit a HR every time up instead of just getting on base any way possible like he normally does. The touch on his passes the last couple of games has been off at times, usually in situations where Bama needs big yardage on 3rd down. He puts a lot of pressone himself under normal circumstances as it is, but I bet he feels the weight is 10x stronger when they can't get easy yards on the ground and the defense knows it.
He’s back to not taking what defense is giving, Get ball to open guy let him run.

Good - A win. A win against a rival. A win in the conference. Doesn’t matter if it’s by one point, 11 points or 50 points. Only two penalties for 25 yards.

Bad - No interceptions on a team that passed 32 times

Ugly - Alabama’s running game. 26 carries for 56 yards (2.2 yards per attempt). Our leading rusher carried seven times for 21 yards (3 yards per attempt). That is pathetic. When you can’t run, good defenses know what you will do.

There will be multiple things contributing to the run game issue. Likley only the coaches watching and disecting film can tell you for sure. I think the RB's are good but there are no Najee Harris RBs in that RB room. Also, the OL is just not playing physical. Lots of things happening but probability of it getting fixed this year low. Best we can hope for is improvement. In the middle of the season they showed signs but not much the last 2-3 games.

Bottom line balance is what is needed but we are going to have to live w/o it. Can you still win, of course you can to a point. All of this works together and there is a reason that what was a strength for the team is now struggling. They need to rediscover their rhythm quickly in the passing game. Need the QB whisperer to work his magic to get Ty out of his head. Somehow get him to see he just has to do what he is capable of doing and take what the defense gives him.

Good post. I also think it is multiple, smaller, issues and not just 1 major issue. Starting on the OL, the 2 guards specifically are getting beat on inside runs... some of that is due to anticipation by the defense, IMO. I personally believe that there's more yardage to be had outside the tackles, but there's issues there too. Having some lighter, quicker linemen that can get outside quickly on blocks would help, but that ain't happening this year. Danny Lewis Jr coming back soon would help however, IMO.

On the backs, as mentioned by many, Jam is too slow to get going and to tentative at times. His vision isn't great and he sometimes runs with his head down, which sure doesn't help. I like what Hill adds, but he's still a liability as a blocker.

Thirdly, the play calling... I don't mind the run calls, but at times, the calls have been way too predictable. And predictable is fine when it works, but when you're gaining a yard up the middle every time on 1st down, mixing it up some would be better. Still, much of the passing game with Simpson is based off play action, so the threat needs to be there. I'd personally like to see a little more off tackle stuff. And it's obvious that Grubb is trying hard to find other ways to get "ground yards" with some of the stuff he's doing, but too much of it is borderline reckless with the trick plays. And if you're gonna run Wildcat, let Bernard take the snap, not Jam. At least Bernard has better vision, feel, and has shown the ability to make chicken salad out of chicken shit when the blocking breaks down. Oh, and he can also throw it, which could come in handy. Also, more speed sweeps with the WR's. Lastly, I haven't bothered to chart it, but my eyes tell me the offense runs much better (yardage and first downs) when they incorporate more pre snap motion. Keep that up and do it more on the run plays.

Grubb is going to have to earn his money to find ways to take pressure off the passing game. As you said he is trying a lot of stuff to get productivity. These guys know it makes everything else harder when the running game has these kind of issues. Hard for me to believe the OL doesn't have the talent to be more physical but it looks that way a lot. I saw some hope against teams like UGA and the Viles but it did not continue improving as I was hoping and was needed.

Fortunatetly the defense continues to improve but they have their own issues but at least they are improving in those areas.

I did want to add one good after hearing the player interviews. They were all happy with the win but not satisfied with how they played. All of them were pretty much saying they need to improve and play better. They did say they think they have a championship level D but they are not there,

Supposedly DeBoer was not thrilled last night himself. He was pissed last year after the OU game, and I'd bet he gets their attention this week, if he hasn't already. OU may well win, I could list a couple of reason why they could.... but I don't believe it'll be because Bama comes out flat as hell this time around. If so, I'll be equally as disappointed as I am stunned.

I made the comment during the game to the guy sitting in front of me, "are we tipping our running plays". Something had to be showing because while I understand we need work, it just appears they load the box against us on certain plays. Or maybe they just know we try to be balanced and wiling to get pressure and force us to throw on them to win.

It was odd how they seemed flat in the LSU game. It appeared that way to me but maybe that was more from the frustration of being off just enough to keep them from getting in a rhythm. To me they just did not have the juice they have had in some of he earlier games. Similar to South Carolina but I just contributed that one to the schedule they had just gone through w/o a break.

All that said, it is still good to get a win when you do not play your best and the team recognizes that and knows they have to keep working,

Stance and weight on hand is a tip. I know our tackles often go from a 2 pt stance but it could be our guards.
Think back to last year or the year before, I believe people were pointing out Milroe’s feet pre-snap. Anything is possible.

Also, I’ve seen where a running play has a straight offensive line( a lot of the time ) and a passing offense line is somewhat curved.
Correct me if I’m wrong.

I think that is due more to linemen taking their initial stance based off the foot of the guy the lineup by, guards go off C, but they drop their outside foot 6-10ā€, then the tackle bases his stance off of that foot, leading to that Flying V look. This often leads to not having enough men on the LOS penalty. Used to deal with that in HS ranks. By the time the TE would lineup, he might be 2’ off the LOS.
