Good- That 3rd and 7 pass to Lotzier Brooks on Bama's 1st drive was massive. Mizzou had sniffed out everything up to that point and was about to get the ball back, up 7, with a stadium full of momentum. Instead, it kept the drive alive and led to a touchdown to tie it up. Brooks is a damn player. Our next Bernard, IMO.
Almost equally as huge, the TD throw on the 2nd drive.... 3rd and 12... Simpson rips a dime to Horton for the TD from 16 yards out. UA needed 7 there, not just 3. Ty didn't have his best day... Mizzou made him uncomfortable for much of the game, but he stood in there and made some bigtime throws, NFL type throws. That was one of them. Despite some mistakes and poor decisions at time, he played his ass off today.
The 2 BALLSY 4th down calls on that late drive in the 4th. And the execution by Ty was perfect. Brooks and Hill both made the plays on their end. I'll be honest, I would have been ok punting on the 1st one, but I appreciate the aggressiveness. I would have been ok with the FG on the 2nd one, but I was glad we went for it based on the field position.
Bama led the total offensive plays 30 to 15 at one point and that was with Mizzou getting the ball first. Ended 75 to 56, which would have been a much bigger issue for Mizzou had they not had an extra week of rest.
Michael Carroll gets things done. IMO, it's time to call it and let him be the RT. Let the battle continue at guard if need be, but tackle should be settled.
Cole Adams is Mr. Reliable on special teams. And I for one I appreciate it.
Bama held Mizzou to 1 of 10 on 3rd down.
Dre Washington on that fake punt stop. Heads up play... I think they probably got the 1st down, but since that crew spots the ball at random places, it worked out ok for Bama.
On defense, it appeared to me that Keeley, Overton, Hill-Green all played pretty well.
Bad- Simpson needs to check down more often and take the easy stuff. I know it's hard because he wants to make a big play, and he usually does... but yards and points are getting left on the table by passing up some easy checkdowns at times. Love how confident he is... just needs to take the singles too when they're there.
Tackling was not great overall but that was a tough assignment today for a few reasons. There were some one on one tackles that were made that were huge though.
IMO, Grubb and Simpson both didn't deal very well with Mizzou's aggressiveness on defense at times... but especially early in the 3rd quarter.
Ugly- That terrible 4th down spot that gifted Mizzou a 1st down (and 3 points) late in the first half. That's the kind of fuckery that this Autrey crew does. I don't think they mean to, they just suck (they had some shitty spots all day for both teams).
Didn't love the 3 straight runs up the middle when Mizzou had all 3 timeouts at the end of the 4th quarter. They only needed 3 ponts, and Bama gave them the ball back and well over a minute. DeBoer went from hyper aggressive to hyper passive in 1 commercial break. But, it worked.
Jam Miller gave his all today... had a rough day with some pass protection, but made up for it with his running.... he rarely had anything to work with inside. Hated to see him get hurt (again). Really need him next weekend if at all possible.
Derek Meadows getting KO'd. Would have been a tremendous grab had he not been knocked out. Hopefully, it wasn't as bad as it appeared and he can bounce back quickly.
That disaster of a 1st play to open the 2nd half. Everything that could have went wrong, did. And Bert and Ernie in the booth were too dumb to realize there was a fumble or that Simpson was laying face down hurt.
Notes- The Bama offense needs to start saving some timeouts for their defense. This offense and usually overcome a 5 yard penalty if needed better than the defense can overcome a misalignment or getting caught in a bad sub situation.
Bama had 3 "almost" forced turnovers in the 1st half... an interception that was dropped, and 2 fumbles that were just barely missed UA recoveries. Mizzou luck factor was pretty high today in that department. Well, and other departments too, like Bama having to wipe that TD off the board in the 3rd when Simpson got stepped on and it messed up the handoff to Miller.
I'm so tired of having hear Matt Austin on every ESPN/ABC game. He adds nothing. None of these rules "experts" do.
Can Eli Drinkwitz do any interview without adding "M-I-Z" at the end of it? It just seems so effeminate. Definitely annoying. Our old pal Josh Maxson is failing at his job if he's isn't in his ear telling Eli that he sounds like a bitch every time he says that to close in interview.
Bottom line, I had my concerns about this game, but UA showed up and got the win. Wasn't pretty at times, but that's ok.
Chalk up another raked win for DeBoer... now, beat the hell out of Tennessee...
Roll Tide.
