🏈 The Good, The Bad and The Ugly vs. FSU

Ty Simpson is not to blame for yesterdays fiasco. I see the problem as an offensive and defensive line that would have a difficult time making it as a first stringer on a high school football team. The QB needs time, which TS did not get, and he is, for all purposes, a freshman. The defensive line was pitiful. There was no hustle, and no effective pass rush. If I were to fire coaches, I'd start with the OL and DL coaches. Then my next person to fire would be Womack. This is the second year in a row to see the exact same problem.

I'd start with D Line coach (recruiting be damned!).
Wommack would be on the same bus out.
I HATE gimmicky players.
One piece of advice to Deboer. I'd rather you just shut up instead of the Kamala-type word salads...

Yeah, those pointing to the quarterback and pointing in the wrong direction. Bringing up his first start and then seeing what the line and his "best" receiver gave him is comical to blame him.

The damn defense gave up 31 points, and most likely should been more if not for a couple easy drops by Florida State receivers. I hope they make Janes Smith run till he pukes three days in a row for that elbow personal foul that sealed the game for Florida State. Coaching is a big piece of this blame, too. I'll keep saying, running a fourth down play where we have routes not making it to the first down marker is setting us up to fail. Ty supposed to take the sack or get it to the only open option??? Sure, Ty should have kept it a time or two and made a big play, but guess what, Tua, Hurts, McCarron made mistakes too. Simpson looked ten times better than Arch did. But Arch has a stout defense.

Florida State basically pulled the Vanderbilt tape and ran it up our ass like Pavia did. So can't wait to see if his words come true like Castillanos' did.

Well Said!

FSU's DL and OL pushed us around for 60 minutes. 75 plays like he is on roller skates. One play the DL shoved him 5 yards back past Ty. The guy weighs 350 lbs. That is a big problem and the fact nobody can take his spot is another.
This quote is it in a nutshell:
“They got us on a few reverses,” linebacker Deontae Lawson said. “That kind of shot us in the foot. Got a big play downfield. It just hurt us. I felt like we were well prepared. We just didn’t capitalize. Some people weren’t doing their job.”

Who's responsible if "some people aren't doing their job"

Excuses

You could count on the big plays Lawson has made in his 8 years at Bama on one hand. He has zero instincts for a ILBer

The Good- The opening drive was absolutely fantastic. Or shall I say the SCRIPTED opening drive was brilliant. Simpson did a hell of a job for his first start in THAT stadium with that revamped team. I think he handled it as well as we could have asked considering those cirmstances.

The Bad- As of today...... the DL is miserable. Keenan was a loss for sure but it can't ALL be about his absence. Wommack has an uphill battle to impress me at this point. I was desperate to see something better. I was gravely disappointed.

When is my head coach going to start coaching guys during the game. This ShulaLostLookIntoTheStands is for the birds. If you look lost, you can bet your players feel the same.

We should have kicked the field goal. PERIOD. Quit this act of desperation 4th down attempts. Get points. Grind out the game to put your team in a position to win & the odds are the OTHER team will mess up after wearing down.

The UGLY- Either FSU is THE turnaround story of the this season or 'Bama is actually soft despite the hard offseason & fall camp (sarcasm). They WERE PHYSICAL & 'Bama didn't match it. The REAL Ugly is that I have yet to see a Deboer team match the physicality of any team that gets after them. It's hard for me to feel good about state of the football program when other (unranked teams) are bitch slapping 'Bama==> READ THAT AGAIN!!!

Enough talk. Enough patting each other on the back. Enough 'believing in this team'.

Show me. Otherwise STFU
I feel the same way about Wommack. I've been very unimpressed. Late in the game I think it was the fourth quarter we pulled to within one touchdown and had tremendous momentum. They were on their 30 something yard line and as expected with Gus they go for it on 4th and short. I knew we were not going to be able to stop that play. It was game over at that point even before they scored another touchdown. It's very very disappointing to know that we cannot stop a fourth and 1 in absolute crunch time when we absolutely have to.

Gus is the Anti-Saban...a one trick poney imo. His whole gimmick was built around oofy doofy trickery causing confusion for Saban style teams that were built to dismantle pro-style offenses.
Yep, and having an athletic running quarterback that he can do his RPO style trickery. And it's not like it's a big mystery. I don't know why we were not better prepared to stop their quarterback.

Gentleman, we have a high school QB. It’s not going to just go away. Under pressure, he’s Molly Potts. He looks scared instead of confident. Couldn’t get is in right play as play clock ran down, led to false start, people out position etc.
Most glaring, trying to throw ball awsy in the grasp- completed pass to #72. Also, could have run for first down but chose to bounce a pass to R Williams, who has disappeared. Without #5, game over by half. We are not even mid tier SEC.
It's not talked about very much, but I remember reading a series of articles a couple weeks ago talking about how Simpson was asking all these different people about how to gain confidence and lose his nerves for this game. Of course he didn't come out and say it in so many words but reading between the lines I was thinking to myself, oh no, this kid is scared to death. He's definitely not one of those Uber confident guys like the QB for FSU as an example. The concerned me very much that that guy is going to be leading the show. Maybe he'll gain confidence as the year goes on but it's not a good indicator that this guy was nervous and tentative as opposed to excited and overconfident.

Good- The opening drive was a thing of beauty. 15 balanced plays. Leaned on the run game and let Simpson settle in, overcame a 3rd down penalty, and ran some nifty and effective red zone plays. At the time, I was feelin' good...

The RB's ran hard and for a young group, I thought they played well... was really impressed with Kevin Riley (a player I honestly wasn't too high on when he signed). They never really got the ground game going consistently again after that opening drive, but when they did run it, those guys made the most of what yardage was available. And, they held onto the football.

Germie Bernard had a great game... thank goodness for him. He's as steady and consistent as they come.

Talty hit a FG, yeah! And was on target for the 53 yarder at least...

Bad- Ryan Williams has got to catch the football better.

Lawson looks like he's at 80% speed at best and that is hurting the defense, a defense which doesn't need any help when it comes to self-inflicting wounds.

Felt like Grubb & Co. maybe got away from what was working well early, but the FSU defense certainly had a lot to do with that.

The OL showed too many cracks, too many breakdowns, especially when the run game evaporated and FSU could tee off. That led to Simpson getting very uncomfortable in the pocket, bringing his eyes down too soon at times. Other times, he held the ball too long, which led to rushed and off target throws. He just looked like he was in a blender back there... hindsight being what it is, that was a tough game and tough environment to make a 1st career start. He will learn from it though. And he did show some toughness.

Ugly- As nice as the opening drive was for the offense, the defense was equally as disappointing on FSU's first possession (and most thereafter). Really thought they'd come out and set the tone. Instead, the DL got eaten alive which led to the DB's getting burned up. Later, the ILB's were out of position and getting gashed by QB runs.

Just like last year, the defense can't get off the field clean after the Bama offense puts it in for 6. Overall, a really bad day for them in pretty much every possible way.

[whistle blows] Alabama is flagged for an undisciplined penalty

DeBoer is now 4-4 in games where Bama was at least a 14 point favorite.

Random Thoughts- I'm thankful Lee Roy Jordan didn't have to witness that.

I can't stand Gus, but I'll give him credit. When Bama is the opposing team, he brings his best gameplans. I saw enough of his auburn (and UCF on their midweek) games to know that he isn't normally that good. But for whatever reason, he has Bama's number... and I hate it. On a related note, I don't know how they'll finish things out, but FSU is definitely a better team than they were last year. Bama should have handled them, but they are closer to 2023 FSU than 2024 FSU. That team was night and day different from last season.

That game had a 2000 at UCLA feel to it. We score quick, feel good about ourselves, and then the shit gets real and eventually hits the fan. I was at that game in 2000... I'm glad I wasn't at this one today.

There is no doubt in my mind at this point that in spring and fall camp, the Bama OL going up against the Bama DL, does no favors for the OL. I believe it provides a false sense of success... not just for the players, but for the staff, and casual observers. I say this, because for the second year in a row, the reports, some of which I've even gotten first hand, don't match the results on the field when the season begins.

I think it was @Krimson who tried to warn us that Wommack was fool's gold when he was hired. I pushed back on that idea at that time. I'm not ready to fold and cash out on him yet, but I need to see a better product considering some of the athletes he's got to work with. Time and patience is starting to run real short.

Nothing stings as bad as the truth and at the time, most of us thought it was a dumb comment to make, but Castellanos was indeed right. The fear of Alabama is officially gone. History would emphatically tell us that one day, the fear will return. But who knows when. I'm greedy and I enjoy it, so hopefully sooner, than later.

Lastly, I feel like an absolute loser for how I built up this team in recent weeks. Yes there were lingering questions, but I was sure things had been fixed. I had them pegged as a 1 or 2 loss regular season team, and they got big boy'd by FSU right out of the gate. On the flipside, I'm not sure anyone had this pegged whole thing pegged more than @mando (in terms of serious posters), with his cautious, somewhat skeptical, wait and see approach.. I'd add @Kirk Van de Graaff to that very short list of Bama prophets as well, but those are from conversations off the board.
Listen... Everyone's take are fair for the most part. I'm still of the belief that they will turn this around. They were too tentative last night on both side of the ball. I just hope we got two weeks to clean this up. The team has an opportunity to turn this around and say chill out folks. we got this. I'm not ready to shit on the team and the coaches.

‘81, these are not shots at you, but I’d like to know your thoughts/answers:
What is your opinion on the defensive line & especially the coaching?
Is this a disciplined team & do you think (or know because you seem to be dialed in) there are any repercussions to the players for the STUPID PF penalties?
Does the team practice fundamentals like tackling?
Do you think the coaches make any effective adjustments (especially on the defensive side)?

* @Brandon Van de Graaff @TerryP - please add what you are hearing

They absolutely can. I’m just not sure they will. For the same issues and problems of last year to pop up, 8 minutes into the game is a massive problem. But we will see how it plays out. Probably won’t know much about the direction they are going until they get to Athens. Until then, I’d just like to see them play hard. Yesterday afternoon looked like a team that was 7 weeks into the year without a bye yet and half the team was dealing with the flu. It was the exact opposite of what this team has supposedly showed in recent weeks leading up to kickoff.

I said the other day I wanted to see this year’s team improve as the season went on, play their best football at the end of the year. They still have that chance. They just have a razor thin margin of error in terms of slip ups along the way if they want a playoff invite. But right now, I personally don’t care about their record. I just want to see them playing football again like it means something to them.

As for the future, my guess right now is some staff changes will be made at the end of the season and DeBoer will get another opportunity to figure things out, assuming they do fall short this season (which appears likely).

You can challenge me. That's fine.

On DL and coaching: All summer long and during fall camp, we've heard they've improved so much adn they're more aggressive on the line, but when the time came they regressed. I don't know if it's the coaching or losing keeley hurt us more than we thought, or it's both. I honestly do not know I do know this: DL is supposed to be better than what we saw and ain't no way the team is like this at all. I want to see more before I'm ready to throw the season away or not.

I think the team is in better place mentally and physically compared to last year, but we'll see how the players respond to this. That's what I'm more interested in right now than reading some ridiculous take on the teams from the fans on other sites. Go read SecRant and Tidefans site and then come back here and tell me what you saw.

I do think coaches are on their ass about fundamental but at the end of the day, the players has to execute on the field and they didn't.

Blame games:

75 percent on coaches and how they called the game. The opening drive was real good, so why they didn't stick to it and adjust a little instead of going away? Wommack didn't adjust fast enough.

20 percent is on players: They had the game plan: They didn't make efforts to tackle, being aggressive .

5 percent: FSU field. Players were slipping and not going fast. I think they were too tentative because of that.

I want changes made on OL asap. It's not working. Same for DL. Those are two i want to see changes on that.

I just want the nasty attitude to come back. I just don't know if the team took FSU for granted, like they did with Vandy and Oklahoma. that mindset has to go. So maybe its a good thing that we'll be facing pressure all season long, and it might be enough to get the guys to say " We can't fuck around no more. "

I think ur right. I think a lot are giving up on team....
On D...so much talk how team did last year in stretch. Same DC
On O....so much talk about Grubb....and energize the O...
The common denominator...."talk about"

How could team not be ready...had all spring n fall...no jumps to portal.

My take...total disrespect on fsu....on Gus bus ( better coordinater than HC)...
.........just a lot of talk....talk....talk...
Its hurt us before...
We are Bama..."fear us". .
.and turns out...we are Bama..."you make our season if we beat-you"...... we storm field. We tear down goal post...we sell tshirts...put up bill boards... if we beat mighty bama
You get our best game. We play harder...we get more n better officials calls...
Fsu season is made....all gravy from here on

Face it. Dont get front page news by beating ole ms...tenn...lsu...etc
