🏈 The Good, Bad and Ugly vs. WKU (Game recaps and opinions)

I'll drop one in here I think is a good thing ... it's something we talked about in fall camp a few times.

By my count, Diggs played PR, KR, S, WR, and played on ST today.

Good - clearly, the D, and our pick 6's. Eddie's third career pick 6 ties him for the all time record shared by CJ Mosley and some guy named Langham.

Bad - Line play and QB play. They stacked the box and should've been roasted for 500+ yards passing. Since we made them pay fully, they never suitably respected it and kept it stacked all day. Hurts has to stop underthrowing, and throwing late.

Ugly - what a better secondary will do to our passing game, perhaps as early as next week.

The problem with Hurts is the late throws, if on time, they would be point on. He is not underthrowing, just late by a tick.

As for better secondary next week, that is not OM strength and they lost their best DB last week.

-Jon Allen is an unstoppable force. I thought he'd be great this year, but he's heading into rare air. Best defensive player in the country?

-Our safeties are all over the field. Those 2 guys are freaks and make plays. Love how they set the tone physically as well

-Thought Avarett took a nice step forward today. All experience is good experience for him. He will need to stand tall next weekend, will be a target.

-Evans was hesitating at MLB in the first half. Weird to see him not be super instictive. He's still got a ways to go there, but I hope they get him a ton of snaps at OLB since we will need more speed on the field.

-Seems like this second game is the same every year. Win the big opener, coast vs a smaller school, look forward to Ole Miss. I actually thought WKU might score some more points, but they came ready to play.

-The offensive line has a ways to go, obviously. I was not impressed vs USC either honestly, as they kind of got punked until the pressure was off. Surprised to see Piersbacher being subbed out because Cotton did not play well either. Ultimately, the real issue is at center though... Otherwise there wouldn't have been a switch the week before kickoff. It will be interesting to see who they go with next week... The Ole Miss DL is no joke, they will have their hands full.

-Hurts did a good job under the circumstances. No run game whatsoever, tons of penalties, Kiffin of course using the Auburn Playbook. He is definetly a step slow on his deep balls and checkdowns... But that's what you'd expect with a true freshman. Bottom line is he makes good decisions and smart yards on the ground. Plus he's smooth about not getting hit. Yes he missed some gimmies but so did the WR's. Passing game was not far off from a lot of big plays.

-Stewart is a man amongst boys. He's got speed and strength like few college recievers I've seen. He's going to have a huge season

-Nice to see Ridley get involved also. Foster and Deiter should have the rust shaken off and I expect them all to be good next weekend.

-Bottom line, the D will need to really show up at Ole Miss. We can't get into a shootout. The DL depth could become an issue so they need to get off the field on third downs. Hurts can make enough plays to score some points but they have to cut out the penalties. Special teams looks fine... Scott back to normal. Can't wait for next Saturday! RTR

A bit late on his throws but the crow hop doesn't help. I love that we are taking shots down field. Heck, I can't remember a game when we threw so many deep balls. But we've got to hit the wide open guys in stride. And the rare time we hit them in stride, the WRs have got to hold on. That was really a frustrating passing game. As was the running game. Scarborough is going to lose his spot to Emmins if he isn't careful.

Our D line is incredible. As is Humphrey. If he'd have just talked that guy after stripping the ball on that trick play...

Good: Defense is still nasty. Jalen (in spurts).

Bad: WKU's "scary" passing game

Ugly: Too many mistakes (penalties, dropped passes, under/overthrown passes, etc.) and interior of that o-line...

We have issues on the o-line fellas, big time. Ross Pierschbacher needs to have a seat on the bench and keep his ass there. I hate "writing a player off" but my God he was horrendous when he was in there. Conference USA defensive linemen were eating his damn lunch. Lester Cotton and Bozeman made some dipshit mistakes too (that high snap was just beyond pitiful). If we cant run the ball better next week we are in for a long night.

Why the hell isn't Baby Mark Ingram (Emmons) getting more touches? His feet are ridiculous.

I haven't found (or tried find) numbers on drops but I count at least three dropped touchdowns (ArDarius, Deiter and Howard) and Jalen either under or over threw at least two more touchdowns. He's got to get that arm under control. The kids upside is incredible and the talent is already there but he's got to get more accurate and gotta get those deep balls more consistent.

The penalties were beyond pathetic too.

good: our secondary for the most part + our dline.

bad: oline, and their......how many?....penalties. i swear, every time we'd get a huge gain, i'd look back and see a damn yellow flag on the field. i can understand holding, it happens on just about every single play on both teams in every game, they just don't all get called. but holy crap at the false start penalties! i commented to my sister that we must have as many penalty yards as we do offensive yards. when i went to get a snack and refill in the 3rd quarter and they showed the stats on the screen, my jaw dropped at our penalties and yards.....9 for 70 yards (or something like that.

ugly: us, next week, if our oline doesn't settle down and learn the damn snap count. oh, and that bs touchdown we gave them at the end of the game.

Good - defensive performance overall and BJ Emmons. He needs to see the field more.

Bad - OL play for much of the day, Jalen Hurts timing in passing game. Barnett is lost looking. I think he may need to slide to 3rd string at least for now.

Ugly - wku's rehab room last night... they took a beating
