🏈 🔎 Looking ahead to this weekend:Vanderbilt -- How does Alabama match up with the Commodores?

Random stuff.

This is one of those efficiency stat things ...

Vandy's defense is allowing 1.75 points per drive this season. The offenses they've faced are rated 79th in FEI.
Bama goes into the weekend at 3.75 with opponents ranked 16th in the DPD.

One thing that caught my eye. Vandy leads the nation in drives that result in either a TD or a FGA. Bama is 4th.

I am always interested to see how Pavia and Vandy handle the game noise this week. I know that he's not going to be necessarily rattled but I also am not sure they'll be able to do checks and line or protection changes and that'll be something to watch for. Without being able to shift into a better call, they may not be churning yards out as much as the models are predicting here.

I also believe our defense is still way better than it has played so far, we haven't had great games but we've found ways to get wins within the games to make plays on defense. We've dropped multiple interception opportunities this year that we schemed up from the sideline...one of those has to fall sometime soon. Maybe this game?

Terry been talking about offense v.s. offense all week and what he's looking at.

I'm looking at what we can do against Vandy's defense and I feel like we can move ball against them and control the clock to keep them from getting in rhythm. I do wonder if we're gonna dare vandy to get into a shootout later in the game ?

Our defense against candy. I actually think we do better than projected.

Maybe our fans can make a difference. They were down the first half, sometimes big, in Blacksburg. That crowd was rowdy, but they made adjustments at halftime and blew the doors off the second half. We need to come out strong and keep our foot on the throttle.

I still say that pick 6 on our opening possession last year was a death knell. We went down 13-0 and couldn’t ever catch back up from that. Just like that NC game against Clemson.

I don't think that'll happen. I think people needs to wipe that game out of memory because this is whole different Alabama offense. Different team. Vandy is different.

I'm still hung up on their offense this morning.

Yesterday I mentioned how Vandy was leading the country in how many times their drives ended with a TD or FGA. They also lead the nation in OPD at 4.71. (Bama - 3.76.) Which takes me right back to murky waters I was wading.

OPD is a great indicator in my books. It has to be taken in context with ODA (an efficiency measurement of the opposing defenses an offense has faced.)

Bama's OPD as mentioned is 3.76. The context with that measurement is their ODA: currently 16th in the nation. (Common sense at play there. "Look how bad ULM is" has been a common cry. When compared to Charleston Southern's defense?)

As mentioned Vandy's OPD leads the nation. Why is the water murky? Their ODA ranks 104th out of 135.

This is what I've been saying all week, maybe not directly... But with the attitude of the QB, and how cocky he is coming off as, the players for Alabama, the coaches are seeing what he's saying on the interview. Last year, the team didn't take vandy seriously, this year I'm led to believe that I don't think Vandy are taking Alabama seriously based on what theyve seen with our performance on defense.

That's why I felt good about Alabama all week. I'm listening to Bama coaches and players and I feel convicted that they're putting in the work.

Being 5-0 and feeling cocky and making the statement that the game won't be close... What team that reminded you of that talked similar sentiment before playing Alabama? ND? Vandy? ole miss?

Here's a good look at the per-game numbers for Vanderbilt's defense and where they rank among the SEC in certain stat categories:

  • Points allowed: 17.2 (eighth)
  • Yards allowed: 278 (fifth)
  • Yards allowed per play: 4.6 (fifth)
  • Rushing yards allowed: 79.8 (third)
  • Rushing yards allowed per carry: 3.02 (eighth)
  • Passing yards allowed: 199 (10th)
  • Passing yards allowed per completion: 9.05 (third)
  • Completion percentage allowed: 64.48 (15th)
  • Sacks: 2.8 (tied for fifth)
  • Interceptions 0.6 (tied for 10th)
  • Opponent third-down conversion percentage: 34.78 (tied for ninth)
  • Opponent fourth-down conversion percentage: 55.6 (10th)
When combining all 12 of these defensive stats, Vanderbilt ranks between seventh and eighth (7.67) in the SEC. In terms of individual players, the Commodores don't have any in the top-10 of the main categories except for tackles for loss. Defensive end Miles Capers leads the conference with 7.5 (1.5 per game).

The week leading up to the Vandy game this year has been more interesting than last year, no doubt. We weren’t digging into stats this deep and analyzing them so much last season. Lea deserves credit for making them at the least relevant.

Credit where credit is due... Lea has reshaped that roster with the right pieces and IMO has done a good job of changing the old Vandy mindset. His best decision, IMO was bringing in Jerry Kill to help with the offense. That Kill/Pavia combo addition has completely flipped that program.

Jerry Kill- the Hugh Freeze “killer”. Freeze never beaten a Kill coached team. Upset the boogs 2 years ago at Lee County tech being a prohibitive underdog. New Mexico State I believe?
