🏈 GOOD, BAD & UGLY vs Piggies

Bad: It has to be the secondary. Way too many WR's running free back there. As noted earlier I think part of it was being on the field too much, but they could have gotten themselves off the field also. Humphrey in particular is getting picked on... Which may not be a bad thing in the long run, maybe he comes back next year.
Like what was said earlier I hate blaming the ref's, but they're to blame on a few occasion with some bogus personal fouls and Pass Interference calls that kept the D on the field longer than they should have. That was the worst officiating I've seen since the Ole Miss game.

Good: Road win, SEC West victory, rushing attack coming in big chunks, defense scored two TDs, Minkah Fitzpatrick was lights out in the second half

Bad: Turnovers (especially the one at the Arky goal line), lost the time of possession battle, didn't have many offensive plays in the second half, penalties, not getting off the field on third down

Ugly: Officiating, secondary was toasted all night EXCEPT for Fitzpatrick----they gave up 400 yards, and Allen is NOT Deshaun Foster

and Allen is NOT Deshaun Foster
If we look at Allen in 2016 vs Foster in 2015, stat wise they are pretty well dead even. Right now, Allen is more efficient than Foster was in 2015.

I won't all this good, bad, or ugly. I'll label this as an observation with a question.

This isn't the first time we've heard how good a quarterback is before playing Bama. We heard it about Allen before this game. We heard it about Trickett and more than a few others. But, come Sunday morning all the warnings about how good these guys were is seemingly forgotten (or was it ignored?)

If a team can't run on Bama they've got one other option—OK, two. One, they need to pass as much as possible or two, they quit. We've seen both but let's look at the first one for this question.

Why is it when fans are warned about how good a player is, or can be, they choose to ignore that talent and would rather point to what they seen as an issue/problem? Is that not football? A play-maker making plays?

So the next time Leonard Fournette and Alvin Kamara run for 250 yards against our defense we should just appreciate they are good runners?

Come on, now. Given to hyperbole? :doh2: Seriously, since 2008 Bama has allowed roughly 30% of the teams they've faced to gain over 100 in a game. Teams! Not individual players. Why do you think teams pass so much against the Tide?

I've seen people voice "concern" over the secondary after Ole Miss and this past weekend over Arkansas. I've yet to see anyone point to how they've done this season in terms of offensive passing efficiency. Both teams were top 15 going into the weekend.

You can look at pass defense efficiency as one barometer. This years' team is doing well. But, if you look at that flip side (like above) you'll see this isn't nearly as bad as some are trying to propose. In fact, they're doing pretty damn good.

Really Terry, pretty damn good?

"I was excited about the three picks," Fitzpatrick said. "But I think we could have played better as a defense overall. We let up way too many big plays and we're going to play whole lot better teams down the stretch. They're going to beat us if we let up that many big plays."

Saban concerned?

"I'm very disappointed in the way we're playing defense," Saban said before the break............., but the defense just isn't playing very well at all, not playing fundamental football in the back end, not good coverage, not executing what we need to do, busted a couple of coverages."

Arkansas controlled the ball for more than 37 minutes — including 21:08 in the second half. The Razorbacks also ran 33 more plays than the Tide.
"We just couldn't get off the field on third down in the second half so we never had the ball," the Alabama coach said. "The time of possession was crazy in the other direction. But it wasn't really the offense [that was to blame]. It was us not being able to get off the field on third down and make the plays on defense that we're capable of making."

Two SEC teams in the last 6 games have had career, over 400 yards passing games on what Marlon Humphrey says is a confused defensive team that is missing their reads:
Humphrey added that there was confusion in the secondary on almost every play, leading to several big gains for the Hogs:
“Almost every play that happened in the first half and the second half, really, we gave to them whether it was a busted coverage, not knowing the certain formation — everything we really gave to them,” Humphrey said.

Terry, you like to compare stats, what is it about this team that reminds all of us of 2014?

Really Terry, pretty damn good?

Yes, pretty damn good.

I see people state, quickly, how good of a job Jalen is doing. But, these two guys are doing better than Hurts.

The top two passers (efficiency) in the SEC this season: Kelly followed by Allen. Nationally, Allen comes in at #17 in efficiency; Kelly higher. (Few will admit it, but Sean White is having a good year down at Auburn as well.)

Don't get me wrong here. There is a consistency issue with pass defense. However, I'm not going to have a knee jerk reaction and label this pass defense as bad based on two games against two guys who are really good college quarterbacks.

Not a damn thing.

I'll compare fan reactions but I'm not one prone to compare one team to another year to year. In this case I will for conversations sake. This years defense is better than 2014's. Hell, through six games it's better than '11.

Good- Road win in the SEC, Oline play, Minkah, Offense consuming HUGE chunks of yardage, 2 more NOTs!!!!

Bad- I am going to say complacency here. When we were dialed in, Arky and Austin Allen were on their heels. We then seemed to get complacent, players and coaches included. We had the 25 point lead and we were content to shut it down offensively, we slowed way down on dialing up pressures, we allowed a good QB to stand back in the pocket and survey the field. I think Saban was content to let them nickel and dime us down the field as long as the clock ran. The problem was, the players lost focus and we gave up larger chunks of field and committed some penalties that didn't allow us to get off of the field.

Ugly- Officiating has really gotten bad over the last several years. This year is no exception!! Blatant missed calls on both sides! How does a team drop back to pass 61 times and only be flagged TWICE????? And one of those was a bullshit call!!!!!! How do you miss Jonah clearly out to practice early on a first down pass play? There was a miscommunication somewhere on our part, some were running a screen while Jalen looked to be running a half roll looking for a comeback.

I didn't say, we were confused, that teams coming up will beat us if we don't defend better, that we're constantely busting coverage, that we can't get off the field on 3rd down, that we're giving up too many big plays. That would be Fitzpatrick, Humphrey, Jackson, and Saban. They are the ones not buying your theories.

You can pass out all the happy stats that you like, but a picture is worth a 1000 stats.

Look again at how Saban came off that field Saturday.

I stand by my points that Allen is a solid quarterback. He's a gamer like his brother. Sure, he threw interceptions, but he also lit our ass up and had some nice throws.
