šŸˆ The Good, The Bad and The Ugly vs. South Carolina

Good: we won
Bad: play calling, blocking, throwing, running, special teams
Ugly: we are damn lucky we won
Pretty much my evaluation.

SO many 3-and-outs by BAMA I lost count. It's difficult to win when that happens. Thankfully, we got some lucky breaks (forced fumble and recovery in their territory towards the end of the game) and a couple little trick plays that worked.

I'll take the win, but damn...

Good- Was not part of the in game thread but my theory is that was a good thing :). It was a win, 4th qtr play so there was no quit. Winning a game when you play poorly... The D deserves credit for this win with a pick 6 and a crucial caused fumble to give the offense the ball back to score..

Probably the biggest good is we made it to the buy week and it is much needed.

It is probably wise for me to pass on the bad and ugly this week.

Bad-

Ugly-

Good - The D didn't quit, despite oh so many three and outs by the O. The forced fumble was classic Bama D.
Bad - Simpson sleepwalked for three quarters, and was high or long on more throws than I've ever seen. Add in the receiver drops, and the O played poorly enough to lose.
Ugly - The inside handoffs being undercut by stunting D-linemen. Steve Spurrier's gait.

Roll Tide.

Good- A nice heads up play by DaShawn Jones on that pick-6 TD... After that quick 3 and out by the UA offense, that gave the team a nice spark and put an abrupt stop to the early South Carolina momentum.

Josh Cuevas is an underrated piece on this Bama team... he's almost automatic.

The defense as a whole was fantastic today. The offense put them in some bad spots, and yes there were a couple of busts, but overall they played very, very well.

Deontae Lawson and Tim F'n Keenan III. Enough said. Pierre, Jefferson, Hubbard, Hill-Green, Lee... all played well overall.

When Bama needed it most, the offense put their foot down and got it done. Plenty down below that went wrong today, but that final drive is what championship teams do in games like this. The team overcame about 3 games worth of mental mistakes, blown assignments, dropped passes, and turnovers. The defense held the line time and time again, and the playmerkers made plays in the end when it mattered.

Bad- Grading hard here, but there was some poor tackling overall by Bama, but that was to be expected a bit if we're being fair. Again, a tired and beat up team right now. I did like the overall effort, but they just had a tough time finishing off some plays and getting off some blocks at times.

Offense was out of sorts a bit with Simpson just off on some throws, others were flat out dropped. I didn't love some of the early play calls, especially some of the run stuff. Things got better there in the 2nd half IMO, even though the execution didn't get better until late in the 4th. They played behind the chains on the first 3 possessions which is far from ideal (and led to zero points). That hasn't been much of an issue early in games this season, but it was today.

Simpson & Grubb and the Boys are going to have to get the long passes figured out soon. Along with the run game, it is holding this offense back from its potential and allowing defenses to gameplan without respect to it. If there is any good news, the last couple were at least catchable... but they need to start completing a few.

Speaking of Gubb... it wasn't his best day. In fact, it was arguably his worst of the season. But, that's life in the SEC.

Speaking of Simpson... I hate to even say it because he's been so good this season, but today wasn't his best either. It was an uphill fight from the start. And to give a good idea of how good he's been, today wasn't horrible for him, he just looked average. But again, a lot of credit goes to the Gamecocks for speeding up his clock (similar to the FSU game). And credit to Simpson for being his sharpest in the 4th quarter.

South Carolina had a 36-12 offensive play advantage at one point in the 2nd quarter (18:53 to 6:44 in TOP).

The Proctor play from 4 yards out near the goal line was a wasted play. I like the Proctor Package, but that was never happening on a run up the middle in that situation. Thankfully, it didn't matter since Bama scored on 4th down anyway...

Ugly- The Carolina EDGE guys ate Bama's lunch for most of the day. That is the strength of their defense... well, team really. Not sure why Bama wasn't a little better prepared to handle them. To compound things, their interior DL played an A game too. Made Simpson work for everything.

-Jessie Palmer thinking that the odds are better kicking a FG to win (in a tie game against the most fundamentally sound special teams group in the nation) with a long snapper who has been spotty as best lately was a better strategy than scoring a TD to go up by 7 with 34 seconds left and the other team out of timeouts (and with a shitty passing game).

Notes- Last year's Bama team doesn't win that game. And I'm sure there will be a good amount of bellyaching about the performance, but I'm just not sure many take into account just how big of a toll the previous 4 games had taken on this Bama team. And in addition to that, while this isn't the best Carolina team, they still have good pieces. And Columbia is still a difficult place to play. Today was always going to be an awaiting storm, it was just about how well Bama navigated it. The result... it wasn't pretty, but they got it done.

That said, Bama now gets that 2nd bye week to rest up and heal up. 4 regular season games remain... LSU, OU, Eastern Illinois, and at auburn. The Tide has 0 SEC losses and is sitting in a really, really good spot. But, they need to get the offense back on track and figure some things out these 2 weeks.

There's ample playing time available for these young RB's if they can prove to the staff that they can block and know the assignments. Daniel Hill has the running part down... just needs to hurry and figure out the rest. But he certainly showed his value today.

I threw shade at him earlier in the week and he had a really good plan today IMO, so I'll give Mike Shula his kudos.

I hate the annoyingly weird shadows that Williams-Brice Stadium produces on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Steve Spurrier walks like Cotton Hill.

As far as Gamecock fans go, I'm not sure 70,000 fans waving white towels sends the message that they are aiming for.

.................

Great assessment.... These two points definetly stood out to me and I fully agree....

Defenders going low on Proctor will bring him down pretty easily so anything more than a yard or two will be a stretch especially if the DL gets penetration which was happening to many times in this game.

On the Jessie Palmer comment, I was not feeling good about our FG kickers ability to hit a FG from any distance in that situation but I liked our odds goiing up 7 which put UoSC in the position of having to march the length of the field, score a TD with no time outs and only 30+ seconds left.

Good:

-Actually got to hand it to Wommack and the D. They are definitely not perfect but they got the job done today. Pierre is a monster and the best player on D. I'll never get used to the atrocious tackling, poor angles, bad run fits, or the bad blitz packages. But they get it done.

-Daniel Hill needs more touches. Why is he not getting the ball more? Every time he's on the field, he is making plays. I don't blame him one bit for that play on 3rd and 1 that got blown up. Get him in space - like the sweep later in the game - and let him work. He had a high IQ play earlier in the game too where he caught the ball and busted it for a long game. Would be a good highlight for us all to discuss.

-Grubb had a very rough game play calling wise, but he was money the last four minutes. Think he did an absolute baller job mixing it up the last two drives.

Also good: no injuries.

Bad:

-Grubb's play calling for 95% of the game. Once again, Alabama's faced multiple opportunities to really take advantage of momentum and blow the opponent out. Grubb calls run right up the middle and some less than stellar play calls (multiple deep shots that Ty missed, so not his fault). Could have easily been 14-3 or 21-12 but Alabama instead fucked around and found out.

-Deonte Lawson is awful. Missed an easy sack that would have set up 4th and very long. Instead, 4th and 12 and South Carolina smelled blood in the water. Then throughout the game, he's running himself into blocks and taking himself out of the play. He can't tackle, his angles are awful, and his pass coverage is mediocre.

-DeBoer's teams vs unranked opponents on the road. You have got to get your team to play better. I thought Alabama was very lethargic to start this game. I understand the schedule hasn't been easy. Four ranked opponents + a road game vs a team with nothing to lose. But this was an issue last season vs Vanderbilt, Michigan, and Oklahoma. Teams Alabama should absolutely handle and didn't. Today was a near catastrophe.

-WR drops and Ty. Both just didn't look confident for a large portion of the game. I think Ty slowly developed a rhythm but man he was having a BAD game. Missing guys high; overthrowing WRs. Then the receivers not helping him out. Benard, Williams, and Scott all had very critical drops.

Ugly:

-Whoever coaches special teams fucking blows.

-Muffed punt late

-Offensive line was terrible. USCjr has a very good defensive front but god lee guys. Challenge yourselves at least to rise up to the occasion. I guess they did in the end but lord what a whipping they took all game.
