Good- A nice heads up play by DaShawn Jones on that pick-6 TD... After that quick 3 and out by the UA offense, that gave the team a nice spark and put an abrupt stop to the early South Carolina momentum.
Josh Cuevas is an underrated piece on this Bama team... he's almost automatic.
The defense as a whole was fantastic today. The offense put them in some bad spots, and yes there were a couple of busts, but overall they played very, very well.
Deontae Lawson and Tim F'n Keenan III. Enough said. Pierre, Jefferson, Hubbard, Hill-Green, Lee... all played well overall.
When Bama needed it most, the offense put their foot down and got it done. Plenty down below that went wrong today, but that final drive is what championship teams do in games like this. The team overcame about 3 games worth of mental mistakes, blown assignments, dropped passes, and turnovers. The defense held the line time and time again, and the playmerkers made plays in the end when it mattered.
Bad- Grading hard here, but there was some poor tackling overall by Bama, but that was to be expected a bit if we're being fair. Again, a tired and beat up team right now. I did like the overall effort, but they just had a tough time finishing off some plays and getting off some blocks at times.
Offense was out of sorts a bit with Simpson just off on some throws, others were flat out dropped. I didn't love some of the early play calls, especially some of the run stuff. Things got better there in the 2nd half IMO, even though the execution didn't get better until late in the 4th. They played behind the chains on the first 3 possessions which is far from ideal (and led to zero points). That hasn't been much of an issue early in games this season, but it was today.
Simpson & Grubb and the Boys are going to have to get the long passes figured out soon. Along with the run game, it is holding this offense back from its potential and allowing defenses to gameplan without respect to it. If there is any good news, the last couple were at least catchable... but they need to start completing a few.
Speaking of Gubb... it wasn't his best day. In fact, it was arguably his worst of the season. But, that's life in the SEC.
Speaking of Simpson... I hate to even say it because he's been so good this season, but today wasn't his best either. It was an uphill fight from the start. And to give a good idea of how good he's been, today wasn't horrible for him, he just looked average. But again, a lot of credit goes to the Gamecocks for speeding up his clock (similar to the FSU game). And credit to Simpson for being his sharpest in the 4th quarter.
South Carolina had a 36-12 offensive play advantage at one point in the 2nd quarter (18:53 to 6:44 in TOP).
The Proctor play from 4 yards out near the goal line was a wasted play. I like the Proctor Package, but that was never happening on a run up the middle in that situation. Thankfully, it didn't matter since Bama scored on 4th down anyway...
Ugly- The Carolina EDGE guys ate Bama's lunch for most of the day. That is the strength of their defense... well, team really. Not sure why Bama wasn't a little better prepared to handle them. To compound things, their interior DL played an A game too. Made Simpson work for everything.
-Jessie Palmer thinking that the odds are better kicking a FG to win (in a tie game against the most fundamentally sound special teams group in the nation) with a long snapper who has been spotty as best lately was a better strategy than scoring a TD to go up by 7 with 34 seconds left and the other team out of timeouts (and with a shitty passing game).
Notes- Last year's Bama team doesn't win that game. And I'm sure there will be a good amount of bellyaching about the performance, but I'm just not sure many take into account just how big of a toll the previous 4 games had taken on this Bama team. And in addition to that, while this isn't the best Carolina team, they still have good pieces. And Columbia is still a difficult place to play. Today was always going to be an awaiting storm, it was just about how well Bama navigated it. The result... it wasn't pretty, but they got it done.
That said, Bama now gets that 2nd bye week to rest up and heal up. 4 regular season games remain... LSU, OU, Eastern Illinois, and at auburn. The Tide has 0 SEC losses and is sitting in a really, really good spot. But, they need to get the offense back on track and figure some things out these 2 weeks.
There's ample playing time available for these young RB's if they can prove to the staff that they can block and know the assignments. Daniel Hill has the running part down... just needs to hurry and figure out the rest. But he certainly showed his value today.
I threw shade at him earlier in the week and he had a really good plan today IMO, so I'll give Mike Shula his kudos.
I hate the annoyingly weird shadows that Williams-Brice Stadium produces on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Steve Spurrier walks like Cotton Hill.
As far as Gamecock fans go, I'm not sure 70,000 fans waving white towels sends the message that they are aiming for.
