| FTBL The Good, The Bad and The Ugly vs. LSU

Either way, he should have been guarded and a better move put on him where the ball never reached him. He could have ran the most perfect route ever and the best pass ever thrown, but as a defensive guy you have to separate the receiver from the ball on a game winning/losing play, not come from behind and try to stop 250 pounds of momentum within a half yard.
No doubt but in this case the TE was at the goal with his momentum going into the enzone. Hard to stop that momentum. The receiver for A&M did not run to the goal line and was actually coming back towards the QB instead of the endzone. Not trying to say the DB played this well just pointing out the Who TE executed much better.

Good:
-Reichard... Great bounce back and huge kick for a kid who's had a tremendous career
-Bryce in the clutch. He's clearly having some issues either physically or mentally, but in the clutch, he rises to the occasion.
-Gibbs... Could you imagine if he didn't come on board this year? He was most of the offense tonight, and in all the big games

Bad:
-Scheme on both sides of the ball. Run never got going.... Bryce never got in a rhythm... Not a good combo. Defensively I get the idea of having PTSD from the UT game, but allowing shorter passes and not being able to tackle in space is a bad combo. The ineffectiveness of heavy blitzes is just alarming. Maybe it is personnel... Hard to believe the talent is short...But the scheme is not dynamic in any way.
-Defensive aggression in general. There is just no fear from offenses... No fear of someone truly making a play. Maybe neutrilizing Anderson is "enough". IMO they're missing a guy like Drew Sanders... Someone that plays with aggression & without fear. Just no edge on 'D' this year.

Ugly:
-Once again... Game management. Going for 2 up 4 with 4 minutes left was an absolute disaster. You're basically saying that blocking an XP to PRESERVE A TIE/OT is more likely/important than forcing them into a 2 pt Conversion attempt to preserve a tie if we drive for a field goa (And that's if they convert it). Blocking an XP is so unrealistic compared to the upside of having a chance to win with a FG in regulation that it's mind boggling how CNS came to that conclusion.
-Having 12 guys on the field twice in a row vs the game winning 2 pt conversion. It's just a real lack of preparedness/execution/planning on behalf of that defensive staff. Both were out of dead ball situations, and the 2nd after a TO. Hard to feel prepared with the 12th man running off the field on the snap
-Last but not least - DB penalties. Time and time again in these losses, it's the DB's not turning heads and grabbing WR's. Time to face the reality that adjustments need to be made in technique and approach... It's just not working in big moments. CNS has been amazing at adjusting and morphing with the game... Hopefully that trend continues in this area. On the flip side - Teams are able to take advantage of big PI penalties pretty consistently, but the 'O' hasn't forced that hand. Just not many looks downfield to put pressure on the 'D'.

Good - Reichard

Bad - Everything else

Ugly - Bama’s game management … the failed two point conversions … especially the second one made no sense. And why is it Bama can’t make them more times than not? I don’t know the numbers on them but I know Bama rarely converts two point conversions.

Really Ugly - Saban’s coverage schemes. They’re outdated and everyone knows how to exploit them in critical situations. He needs to get a new defensive coordinator who will bring in new schemes and Saban needs to stop coaching the DB’s. It’s not working and it hasn’t in a number of years.

Saban can win another NC but it will require a drastic change on the defensive side of the ball. A defensive Kiffin needs to come in with an updated defensive schemes. If that doesn’t happen Bama won’t win another NC under Saban. That’s a fact. This was supposed to be the best defense in years … lots of experience had come back and lots of 5 and high 4 Star talent. Golding’s weak but he’s having to use the same schemes Saban’s been using since his LSU days. Kirby knew those schemes wouldn’t work against modem offenses so he changed. Saban has been unwilling. He keeps saying the DB’s are missing their assignments or they’re not communicating or fill in the blank. The bottom line is what they’re ain’t working now … hasn’t been working and will never work against equally talented teams with decent coaches.

So what do you think he changed?
I of course don’t know the specifics but a couple of years ago on a sports talk show he said they had simplified coverages and reduced the number of reads his DB’s have to make before each play when facing fast paced spread offenses. He said it allowed them to play faster and more confidently.

Good: Bryce at < 100% is still good ... good enough to win games for us.

Bad: a culture of playing undisciplined, mental errors, and being out-physicaled in the trenches has become entrenched for two consecutive seasons now

Ugly: WHY THE HELL DID SABAN ELECT TO GO FOR 2 AFTER OUR FINAL TD IN REGULATION??!! There was no real benefit even if we had converted, and as it turned out, it kept us from winning the game with our final field goal. We are seeing more and more coaching mishaps like this which we never used to see under Saban.

I agree 100%. Saban's defensive schemes are outdated and teams have learned how to exploit them. The man to man coverage is and has been predictable for years now. If Saban wants to go out on top, he has to bring in a young Kiffin/Sark on offense and a defensive mind that understands today's game. Bill O'Brien is not the guy. He has called the same 3-4 run plays ALL year. I'm really curious to know what the RBs and WRs work on during the season? And I absolutely don't believe the negativity about the WRs being below average. The play designs are basic as h3ll and don't allow for separation. Kiffin and Sark were masters at play design and scheme, something BoB just doesn't understand. As for Pete, he has been given enough time to grow and adjust. It is just not happening. Maybe Saban needs to look at Kirby and Georgia to see how this works. Its plug and play in Athens now with very little drop-off if any.

Good. We get to go to a bowl game

Bad. Throwing and catching was way off. Arm tackling was keeping our jerseys clean.

Ugly. DEFENCE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. DEFENCE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. DEFENCE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. DEFENCE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. DEFENCE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS.
DEFENCE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. DEFENCE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. DEFENCE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Good: We dont have to worry about playing UGA.

Bad: Not sure I can post anything that would do this topic justice...but Bad is seeing this team next year without Bryce and a few others. What little spark we had this year will be gone next year...was running on about 4 cylinders this season, won't have anything but a bunch of fouled out spark plugs next year.

Ugly: That was about as ugly bye week prepped Bama team I've seen in a while...long story short....it was a shit show.
