Good- The first series on defense to open the game with a 3 and out was nice to see.
On the flip side, that 15 play opening scoring drive by Bama was equally as nice to see.
UA had a 28 to 8 play advantage at one point in the 1st half... Considering Bama kicked off to start the game, that's cookin'.
Once again, Grubb & DeBoer planned out and called a terrific gameplan.
Bama was 12-19 on 3rd downs.... UGA was 2-8.
Only 4 total penalties against Bama and 1 of them was bullshit.
I thought the offensive line played extremely well, especially considering the environment, the opponent, and the shuffling/experimenting that they did.
What a play by LT Overton to stop UGA on 4th and short early in the 4th quarter. SOMEONE had to step up on defense and make a play for Alabama to have a chance. Overton did that.
Ty Simpson... if you were one of the people that wrote him off after week 1 then you should feel ashamed.
That pass to Kadyn Proctor that nearly scored a TD... watching that play on loop is probably a safer and more effective alternative than using Viagra.
That final play for a first down to lock up the game wasn't shabby either. Grubb pushed the right buttons almost every time and had the right plays in the holster. Those 2 weeks to prepare certainly showed.
Welcome back Jam Miller. Dude ran hard tonight and had to work his ass off for most of all his yardage.
Lotzier Brooks looks better and better each week... We are gonna miss Germie Bernard next season, but 2 more seasons of Brooks makes me feel better...
Bray Hubbard is a menace.
Bad- Still too many communication issues, especially for the 5th game into the season. And the attention to detail (from the top down) is still somewhere between shitty and woeful.
That Connor Talty FG miss. Whoof.
Ugly- DL (and defense as a whole) got whipped on too many runs. Giving up 5 rushes for 20+ yards is difficult to swallow. And for several of them it was because guys were lost. But overall, they gave up way too many explosive runs. I was worried about the tackling and it seemed to be ok at times (especially in the first half), the problem was they couldn't get a hand on the ball carrier soon enough on too many runs. LB's and defensive backs deserve some blame too. And as the night wore on, the tackling did start to suffer...
I swear Bama is snakebit with injuries and the snake always seems to strike where the roster is weakest. UA simply cannot afford to lose Qua Russaw, especially now that Latham is out. Yet, he goes out in the 1st half with an injury because of course.
That targeting call on James Smith was bullshit. And Smith having to miss the first half next week is even more bullshit. Meanwhile, UGA goes helmet to helmet later on Ryan Williams (who was much more defenseless) and it was crickets. Then later, the UGA player came in crown first like a missile into the pile... at least they flagged him, but again, that was just as much targeting as anything James Smith did.
Notes- The screen game is (finally) starting to click...
Ryan Williams needs to decide what type of player and teammate he wants to be. He's wasting too much talent right now, and the people in his ear (away from UA) are not helping.
Bama didn't score in the 2nd half, and how UGA's defense turned it up was my concern going into the game. They are never out of a game and seem to thrive when they are down. But Bama held them to just 7 second half points, which is worth crowing about too. The defense has issues, but they did their part tonight.
Feels like Wilkin Formby's move to guard is all but complete at this point. If you've been paying attention around here, this didn't catch you by surprise.
Simpson has the freedom and ability to get the offense out of bad plays and into winning plays at the line before the snap, something they couldn't consistently do last year. But Simpson excels at it.
That TD thrown on Domoni Jackson to open the scoring for UGA was the first pass completed on him this season (I think). I also think it was a coverage bust, which could help explain it... but not sure on that. Regardless, not his best game.
UGA's home win streak is never a thing if they'd had to play Bama there more often. Remind your UGA friends of that when you see them.
Bama is now 4-1 with Vandy on deck, about where most fans probably thought Bama would be at this point. Yes, the FSU loss was a disaster (in terms of how Bama played), and that game can't be flushed yet. But tonight's win was impressive, more so than many fans probably even realize. And unlike some Bama fans, this team didn't quit. Instead, they are getting better each week, especially on offense. Next step is getting some revenge on a very good Vandy team. Every week from here on out is an exam and Bama needs to be fully prepared. But it is at the very least promising to see that they've handled their business since that loss in Tallahassee. Now they need to handle the success of tonight and roll it into a strong week.
Roll Tide.
