🏈 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: Florida

Good- Not a lot really. This team needed to face some adversity, they aren’t built like last year’s squad. They faced it today. They went on the road in a tough, loud environment and beat a good team. That’s good.

Bad- The offense leaned too heavily on the pass. I’m a member of team Pass the Ball™ but I’m also a fan of using our weapons. That’s nitpicky, but I think Bama could have done more via the ground… and they are going to have to put concerns aside at some point and let Bryce use his legs and force the defense to defend that.

Ugly- Lack of adjustments on defense and the middle getting exposed all game long. Also, 3rd game in a row the WR’s are getting little to no separation (by Bama standards). Obviously they’re young and will get better, but it would certainly help Bryce some in the passing game. This is hurting the offense as much as anything, IMO.

Good: A win against a legitimate too 25 team

Bad: Defense, QB decision making, blocking, tackling, covering, Josh Jobe penalties (as usual), and the list goes on

Ugly: How bad the Ole Miss offense is going to beat us

Good:
Started the game with 3 straight TD drives
We won

Bad:
3 straight 3 & outs in 2nd qtr
pass rush seemed slow, inconsistent at best and the run stop-up the middle was too

Ugly:
Pass interference calls on both teams in the 1st half, really lame
giving up a 99 yard drive when had them in 3 & 10 at the1
Plain ugly Bolden drop for the potential TD in 3rd Qtr

Good: Win and really Young's QB play for a first year starter. When it is all said and done the young offense made enough plays to win that game. Never would have expected to be saying that. I thought it would be the other way around.

Bad: Getting whip at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball but especially on Defense. Giving up 250+ yards rushing should get you beat. Oh and giving up a 16/17 yard pass on a 3 and 19 that allowed UF to go for it on 4th and get the first down is atrocious.

Ugly: Fan's thinking that losing the play makers we lost to the NFL and numerous coaches and the team was just going to continue to perform at the same level as last year. Expecting this team to measure up to that team which was one of if not the best (offensive) teams in bama history is not realistic. Can they be good to very good? Sure and I still expect them to become that but they have to navigate these early games while they figure things out and find out what they do best.

Good: First quarter for offense and defense. Will Anderson.

Bad: I’ll get some hate, but Bryce Young. He is late throwing the ball. He doesn’t anticipate. Several times he scrambled (good) but then waited for a receiver to get open and then throws a crap pass. He had the chance to run for a first down or a TD, but waited too long to make a decision. He doesn’t seem to play with intensity.

Ugly: Slade Bolden. How do you drop a ball when nobody is covering you? His TD against Mercer should have been a fumble and then the drop today. He had three catches for 19 yards with a long of 15. Seriously? For a starter in this offense?

Very Ugly: Penalties. Overall performance of the offense and defense in quarters 2-4.

Good:
-Hot start for both sides of the ball! Great initial game plan an execution
-Will Anderson... He was the bright spot on D, for sure. Wouldn't want to see what that may have looked like without him.
-Jase as a weapon out of the backfield!
-No Turnovers!! That is huge in a road game... Huge.
-Special teams was solid! Some good coverage, a made FG, and bamboozled their returner into muffing it at the 1 yard line 😀

Bad:
-General lack of urgency and emotion from the 2nd quarter on... Didn't see much in the way of passion or aggression on either side
-2nd quarter stagnation. The runs were effective early and whether it was Bryce opting to pass, or play calling, the short passing game was not working and it was ugly.
-2nd half conservative play. Was there a single pass attempt over 15 yards? WR's and LOS were getting squatted on, and I can't remember a Bama offense in a LONG TIME not even considering putting pressure on the defense. Looked like Bama circa 2008.
-Safety reading/tackling. A combo of both... Both of those guys really struggled to get guys to the ground in 50/50 situations
-DL push... Maybe a wider rotation could have kept guys a little fresher. Have to give credit to FLA because they really protected him, but I thought the interior of the DL looked and played a little slower today thane expected.
-O/Bryce being on time at the LOS. Just a lack of urgency to line up and get organized...
-General lack of discipline... #20 is going to be a hell of a player and made some plays, but he showed some inexperience today in setting his edge. To be expected though, he's young, as a lot of these guys are!

Ugly:
-CNS has always been extremely conservative heading into halftime with the lead.... But sometimes the team and staff can take on that mentality, and it may have rubbed off on the overall outlook today. He may have lost some confidence there with Bryce and didn't use the TO's to try to end that half with a score, and that mentally carried into the 2nd half. There was minimal feel of "attacking" from the 'O'.
-3rd and 19 blitz for a 17 yard gain in the 4th quarter. Just head scratching on a lot of levels...

All in all though, that's a great character win. Tough place to play! And you have to give Florida a ton of credit, they played WELL, and have talented players... I was impressed with them. Bryce will learn and get better from that game, for sure! I also think O'Brien will do a little self eval and improve moving forward, as it's not easy to navigate that type of game with a freshman QB. It just looked like he/CNS lost a little confidence in him and/or the O, and really got tight from the 2nd quarter on. That being said, they won the game and that's a big time win... So great to learn from a win instead of a loss!! RTR

Good: Florida kicker shanking an extra point
The Bama team that played the 1st quarter including the QB pressure in 1st.

Bad: Bama team that played the rest of the game.

Ugly: Florida’s 2 point conversion attempt. They could have converted that in several directions if the QB hadn’t held on so long. Glad he did!
