Is that a knock on the DC or more the position coaches? I mean doesn’t Saban coach the DBs? I feel like they’ve been the most inconsistent position in the last few years…

I personally have zero issues with PG staying DC if Saban decides that’s what he wants. He has a ton more information than we do to properly evaluate the performance of PG. we simply do not and can not have enough information to be able to properly evaluate his performance. So… you can watch every play out there and even if you have it in the all 22 camera, you still wouldn’t have enough to properly evaluate PG performance.

With all due respect dude, I disagree with this line of thinking. That is an appeal to authority, and it is very evident that there has been a drop off in defensive execution.

I would have an issue with Saban keeping Golding, because it signals that the greatest coach of all time is "settling" for a level of execution that in previous years would've gotten a coach shit canned.

Tree, versus forest. No, two trees versus a grove of 13 this season. Kansas State stands tallest amongst these.

UGA was averaging close to 40 a game last year. Alabama held them to 24 in the SECCG. But that's not a tree, it's a mere sapling. While we're at it let's not forget the seedling found in #4 Cincy last season.

Ohio State and Notre Dame in 2020. Or, for that matter, let's add #3 UGA in the mix. We'll call all three, in light of the holiday season just passed, artificial trees.

We can go look at '19, or '18 but the same conclusions will be found. You're either being intellectually dishonest or lying to yourself.

First off, 2020 was an offensive year where nobody could touch us. We simply outscored everyone. So sitting there thumping our chest and making an argument for Notre Dame is just hilarious. They had no right to be in that game, and we gave up 375 yards. Ohio State's quarterback was playing hurt and we still gave up 350 yards. Gave up 380 to Ole Miss that year, over 410 to Georgia in the regular season, and over 460 to Florida in the SEC Championship game.

Last year's game against Georgia in the SEC Championship was fun to watch because the offense exploded finally and was blocking. We gave up 340 yards as a defense. Gave up 364 in the Natty against them.

I cannot even believe you want to throw Cincinnati in there as some amazing accomplishment. We simply outclassed them with talent alone. Defense played well, yes, but they had zero answers with our size, talent, and strength. Like men playing boys there. Not hanging my hat on that one.

The one thing I see you continuing to be accepting is allowance of yards as long as we win the game. The issue with that is the allowance of yards is what gets us beat in close games and what is making other games close for no reason. Zero reason Texas and Texas A&M should have been close to us. Offensive struggles, yes, but they drove up and down the field on us with opportunities to win in both of those games. You're clearly willing to accept this year's defense as great, but I am not. We looked like shit in a lot of spots, and with the talent and veterans in that unit, we should have dominated, plain and simple. All of this being said, we don't have a crappy defense and I've never said we do, but we are doing less with more than anyone else I have seen in college football. This season of college football was down as a whole and nobody really wants to take the trophy. This was a year even a down Alabama team of the past would have coasted to a Natty. But we couldn't stop anyone on defense when it mattered. We shut Kansas State down, and that was great and showed us what we expected, but the inconsistency to do it when we normally thrive, at the end of a game was non-existent.

So no, it's not intellectual dishonesty or lying to myself, it's the simple fact we did not get the job done when it mattered when teams of the past have. I'll ask you this as well. Why is Saban even talking to defensive coordinators if he is happy and that our defense is truly great/elite/top drawer or whatever else you are trying to call it?

We've got 3-4 years worth of film to watch and go over, that's more than enough to make a decision on his performance, if you feel it's enough to keep him at Alabama, fine. But from what I've watched since his time here, it's not. I'm not willing to wait another year to see if he finally puts it together.... I can only hope Saban feels that way, or any other way about him to get him to leave for another job.
unless you know the defense called and the film watched and the scheme put forward and then taught and practiced.... then you don't have enough information. You can watch all the games you want and you still won't have enough information to know where/if there is a breakdown. Was it a breakdown in the ability of the player? The actual execution of the play? The evaluation of the player during recruitment? The scheme put forward from film breakdown? Is it the actual play call? There are literally dozens of reasons whey things may have gone wrong on a play, game, season. You, my friend, only have a bit of information to try and determine from your couch what is the problem...

It's not about what I feel or you feel... it's about what Saban feels and he has the information to make the correct decisions, either replace or keep... If he decides to keep PG, so be it and I'll be fine because I know he has more information than me. If he replaces him, fine also... again, he got more info and has a better grasp on what the team needs than I would.

A drop off in defensive has happened all across football at all levels and at all schools... it's not something isolated to Bama and Saban. Some of that is due to skill players being found more on the offensive side of the ball in lieu of playing defense. Some of that has to do with the way the rules have been installed given some advantages to the Offensive side of the ball. Some of that has to do with much more Offensive minded coaches making their way into head coaching positions. There are many other reasons too.

Even uGA just gave up how many points to oSU in a playoff shoot out?

Football has changed over the last 5 to 6 years to be a lot more offensive. Saban saw that, knew that, and corrected for that the only way he really can... and that is to get an offense that can run with them... I think the days of shut down defenses are over... at least against teams with dynamic QBs and other position players.

There are two things I've consistently repeated.

One, I get what you guys are complaining about. And two, "average to decent at best" is simply not true.
@TerryP , I'm right there with ya... I think we've all been a bit spoiled from years past and have unrealistic expectation to say the least. This is a much changed game over the last 5 or so years... Better or Worse, I can't say, but defiantly a different game.

Total Defense (Allowed yardage) Alabama was ranked 13th
Scoring Defense Alabama was ranked 9th.

That isn't average to decent.

And yes, those stats get padded by some cream puffs, but so does everyone else's stats benefit from creampuff. It's not like Bama is the only team play a few creampuffs. It all comes out in the wash.

Could it be better, sure... but it's still in the elite group.

And just to point out how the game has changed, look at the top 10 in Total Defense this year:

That's why we watch film man, to determine what the problem is. And you can breakdown what play they called by watching film, you can physically see the breakdown of coverage, or if a player overran a play, or if a player didn't fit their gaps right. And it could be the player messing up, or the coach calling the wrong thing in that situation. Both things have happened this year. So what you're saying isn't factual. They have a wealth of information online about Sabans scheme

But you can't see why... is it the teaching/coaching? Is it the players abilities? Is it communication on the field? Is it the scheme put forward to defend? Is it the playcall ? Is it the offensive scheme causing confusion? There are a many reason WHY these things happen... all of which you know zero about. Heck ,you don't have access to the all 22 camera either... so you can't see the whole play anyway. (if you can, you need to share that link). All you can say is player X missed his assignment/tackle... but that's about all and means not much in the grand scheme of if the coordinator is doing his job correctly.

What ever happened to, "we don't care if you know what we are doing on defense, we gonna stick it up your ass anyway" attitude. We have lost our swagger is what I see.
I blame Saban and his required Yoga and mediation classes.... making the team soft... ;)

If it's a consistent problem of these things(which was the case this year) then it's coaching. It almost always goes back to coaching. Seeing the same mistakes over, and over again for the last three seasons is telling that it's more than likely a coaching issue, if a player is struggling, or makes a mistake, whats the coaches job to do? You guessed it, coach them up. And I've gone over this already, in detail in a past thread. Film tells all, and will expose all. And it not difficult to find a skyview of the games, just search for it.

OK let’s assume you’re correct. Which coach is at fault? Is it the defensive coordinator for calling the wrong plays? Is it the position coach for teaching the wrong techniques? Is it the recruiting coaches that are evaluating players incorrectly? Is it the analyst putting forward the wrong schemes for the opponent? Is it the head coach and his implementation of his overall schemes and processes? Where is the failure?

Wait a minute, that vaunted Georgia defense that everyone is clamoring for gave up more yards per play than the regular run of the mill average defense played by Bama. Hmmm

Somebody approached the defensive side of the ball with all this offensive change because we ain't #1 and we have fallen from where we were ranked in year's past. Saban wouldn't be inquiring about defensive coordinators if he was happy as you're eluding to. Golding wouldn't be at Alabama if he had other promotional offers because he's so good.

They've also played an extra game against better offensive competition. I'd rather be in their spot than ours currently.

I never said that Saban was happy with Pete or for that matter that he wouldn’t make a change. All I said is that trust what he does will be correct because he has the information and we don’t.

I get that and understand he's more than earned that respect from us all. That being said, he does have tendacies to hold on too long or be hard headed about changes. Clock management is a prime example.

The stats are decent, sure. Everybody points to the box score and says "but look!"

To relate this to scouting: kid from a top-heavy conference has all the measurables. 4.3 speed, 36" vertical, great broad jump. Even excels at cone drills.

But what truly matters is play on the field. The "eye test", measured against top competition.

And that is what so many of us observe on a weekly basis that the statisticians in a back office don't:

Wiffed tackles. Poor coverage. Bad run fits. Gaps in coverage. Troves of defensive penalties. Players constantly out of position at the snap. Not adjusting to "window dressing" well.

Our defense is a paper tiger, bro.

In the biggest games against tougher opponents, our defense had no will to dominate, no killer instinct. Reflective of the coordinator.

"We're changing".

Really?

NOW?

It took you all season to finally figure out how to make an adjustment?

Come onnnnnnn, bro.
