šŸˆ Ryan Grubb joins the Alabama offensive coaching staff.

Absolutely no way of knowing but my opinion is the Bama offense would have been more productive if Grubb stayed last year. Nothing against Sheridan but a more experienced OC and play caller would have been able to navigate that dynamic better. Sheridan did fine but was delt a lot to handle with the OL, QB, new league and players having to adjust to a new system.
A more experienced OC would still have to deal with the same hand, from the same deck of cards. The only wild card I find is Jalen. Would he have responded differently post-UGA with Grubb versus how he responded to coaching under Sheridan? I don't.

The old man in me is used to hearing about Alabama's elite defenses.
In some ways, they were.

As example, in drives that ended in touchdowns the Tide defense ended the season ranked fifth in the nation (non-garbage TD's.) Point per drive? They came in sixth.

Their worst ranking last season was found with busted drives (where the opponent has zero yards, or less.) They ranked 98th (of 134.)

The opponents Bama faced last year (offense) were in the top third in the nation (40th) The most efficient offense they faced last year was with UGA who was just outside the top ten in efficiency.

We didn't see a defense that was in the top ten in yards allowed. Michigan, at #10, allowed 13 fewer yards per game than Bama. They weren't far off. (Bama was #10 in scoring defense last season.)

I believe if people step back and look they'll see the defense grew more last season than the offense; rounding into a pretty damn good unit by season's end. That comes with the caveat they had more room to grow than the other side of the ball.

I'm hoping that with Grubb the Bama offense will be more dynamic, with motion, different formations, and a creative running game. I didn't really watch Washington under DeBoer and Grubb, so I'm not sure. Will Grubb equal Sarkisian? Will he turn Simpson into an elite passer? He has the weapons, similar to Mac Jones. RW, Bernard, and Horton should provide plenty of targets. And maybe get the tight end more involved. The biggest question for me is the Oline. Some good experience coming back, along with some fresh faces. Will they gel and grow into a cohesive unit?

I was pleased with the way the defense progressed last season. The vanilla offense is a different story. Personally, I think the hiring of Grubb is what we need. Sheridan, IMO, will do fine with a couple more years of seasoning. I will say this, Sheridan was put in a tough spot when Grubb left and returned to Washington as the OC of the Seahawks.

Said this previously, but I think with Grubb with in game adjustments and calls would have been better overall, even if just slightly. And while this is nothing more than speculation, I'd bet the leash on Milroe would have been shorter, especially in the OU game. DeBoer has a lot of trust in Grubb, built up over the years. And Gubb will handle the QB's a little differently than Sheridan... he's more stern in his approach. Lastly, he would have been better prepared for the leap to the SEC, IMO, than Sheridan.

One other thing I'll add, while it was only 1 year in the NFL, that 1 season as OC will make Grubb a better coordinator. Just as it did Sark. Coordinating and play calling in the NFL is a different level of puzzle, and that experience will pay off for him going forward.

And as for his year in Seattle, they weren't horrible. Mid pack in total yards and scoring offense. Not much in the run game, but top 6 in passing yards per game. 12th in yards per play. And that's with Geno Smith at QB... not trash by any stretch, but he's not a top 10 QB either.

The one thing where there is no question; CRG has more experience working/coaching offensive lines.

I appreciate you bringing a pet peeve of mine up on a Monday morning! šŸ™ƒ No better waste of time than trying to compare two jobs, even with the same title, in the two different worlds of the league and collegiate ball.

"Saban had a losing record with the Dolphins, PAWL!"
