🏈 The Good, The Bad and The Very Ugly vs. MSU

I didn't get to watch the game but just saw the last drive on the replay.

Todd Grantham and/or Cousin Eddie must seriously have some mental issues to be blitzing on 3rd and 15 with less than a minute left. That was absolutely inexcusable especially out of a TO. So many coaches want to be hero's it's crazy. Had they played that straight up that game would have almost certainly ended in overtime.

(I actually get the last "go for broke" blitz on the TD... Trying to force a TO or scoot Papa's field goal back).

Good: As far as I could tell the offense as a whole played well. Only 57 snaps for 444 yards which is almost 8 yards a snap with no turnovers and I think only one penalty on the offense.

Bad: The non holding calls on their OL.

Ugly: We just beat the #16 team in America and and most of the press will be slanted negative because it was a nail biter.

IMO: Mississippi State had an excellent game plan for us and were better than I gave them credit for. We're playing short handed and still got it done. I know we've got some improvement to make but the confidence level of this team just went through the roof. Why can't ours do the same? Roll Tide.

One other item after rereading this thread: Holcombe we all know has diabetes. @TerryP alluded to that issue in a post last week. Blood sugar levels have a direct impact on strength, speed, stamina, flexibility and healing capabilities. Different types of exercise can have very different effects on blood sugar, particularly when adrenal hormones start to kick in. Blood sugar levels are also affected by the recovery process. If things aren't just right, it definitely affects performance and is much more challenging for a high level athlete than people realize. The coaching staff must believe his game experience is worth more than Dylan Moses' ability at this point. IDK, but thought I'd throw that out there.

Good that coach Saban didn't panic. If he has the faith in Jalen then we should all learn a lesson. Also was the most exhilarating game we have had in a long time.

Bad. Those crazy penalties for grand standing and leaping. What's wrong with leaping. They did it on an offensive play.

Ugly. Defense couldn't stop the run. Those running lanes looked as easy as ($hit through a tin horn.) All their backs could run through them. Not one dirty jersey from contact. Allbarn is going to be a big big challenge.

Good....Win
Bad......OL and DL losing the battle at the LOS
Ugly....About 14 games played since LSU showed the world how to attack Bama's offense and as of today Bama hasn't been able to counter the counter..

Roll Tide........Salute to a hard earned win vs Miss Mistake. I hope some school will take Dan from State. Having to play them after LSU will find the Tide missing a beat. It would be good if they had a lesser coach ....LOL

Nothing to add.....you all hit it.....
Wow.....Should all have bought stock in Budweiser....cause consumation was way up..
Roll Tide....Thanks JH...and O....
And didnt NS look a bit frassled.....during and after game....lol
He ain't use to being challenged and having DLook like Shulas....

Good: Jalen Hurts throughout the game, but mainly on the last drive. Calvin Ridley and Rashaan Evans played hard all game long.

Bad: The offensive and defensive lines. Both were destroyed all night long, and we looked quite pathetic. Blown off the ball, and it did not allow our backers to be their normal blood thirsty selves.

Ugly: Hate calling out players and dogging them for bad play, but Hootie Jones and Tony Brown were as bad as I have seen two guys play. Missed tackles, bad angles, awful in pass coverage. We have to have someone on the sideline that can stand in better than that. Xavier McKinney should have gotten put out there.

It was an overall poor defensive effort outside of Evans and Quinnen Williams, who dominated. The rest of the line getting pushed back into the linebackers made the backer ineffective, and then the secondary did not make many plays only multiplying the susceptibility. We did what we did to win the game, but deserved to lose. Friends of mine said "well that was a drive that says you've been there 5,000 times before" stating we didn't choke like many other teams would and have.

The blitz on the TD is far more defendable but I haven't talked to ANYONE that can give a decent explanation for blitzing safety's on 3rd and 15.

I totally agree on tony and hottie ....

Tony looks the part of a football player but plays like a track guy ...

All that track speed means jack shit when you a) never can get your head around, b) cant tackle, c) are soft.

And Hootie is a linebacker playing safety. There are a number of linebackers that are better in coverage than he is, he's constantly out of position and making mistakes. Pretty inexcusable for a guy that's been in the program for four years. He's physical and pretty solid against the run but a huge liability in coverage. The problem is Minkah is having to play a lot more star and even outside corner this year because of the struggles of the others. So, what the hell do you do? Evidently Diggs and Shy Carter suck so bad that they can't over take Tony Brown. Or someone is just being incredibly hard-headed.

They were zero blitzing a lot last night .. had Jalen confused or just overly cautious but he hit them when he had to ...

He showed last night he could pass the ball when he HAD to ..

Our run defense is scary , and it’s the opposite of the scary it was last year .

Good: Hurts is getting better and better. Cool as a cucumber. Fitzgerald throwing out of the endzone on the last play.

Bad: Jacobs and Harris should be getting more touches a game. Having to listen to Pasch and McElroy...

Ugly: Terrible timing on the penalties.

Finally got to watch the game... I'll throw a few things out there. I should preface by saying that I'm generally considered a "negative" dude... I consider myself trying to be more objective... But I just try to call it how I see it. Had a few dudes get on me about pointing out certain dudes not being good players, but nice to see those same guys have come around to doing the same! I guess we all have our breaking point of what's considered right and wrong but I'm just a prick all the time... lol

Good: Josh Jacobs & D. Harris. Those guys are really good all around backs. I think Bo should be the #3 designated for goal lines and a series in the 4th quarter. Love how they used all 3 backs in the late 3rd and 4th quarter it was probably the difference in the game. BTW D. Harris on the 3rd and 15 made an NFL level block on a blitzer, killed him up the middle. Thing of beauty.

Q. Williams & R. Evans made some good plays in the back field. They seemed to be the only two guys "playing fast" and being aggressive. I must point out though that R. Evans also takes himself out of position many times in a game... commits to the wrong hole on certain run plays and takes himself out of the play. At the same time he does so many good things that it's hard to expect much more out of him. He's one of the few things holding that group together right now.

Calvin Ridley is just a special talent. Enjoy him while we got him. So electric getting open and with the ball in his hands. What a player!

Bad: Not committing to the run until late in the game. At least it didn't feel like it. I'll just never be completely happy with the O until they get under center every now and then and run the ball at people. It leads to way to to many negative plays when the ball starts 5 yards behind the LOS. I understands how it bring the threat of a qb run but no reason we can't run the ball at people a few times a game... At minimum.

Line play... As noted by everyone else. I personally don't think the DL was terrible because I thought the LB's were inconsistent as well. Credit to Miss St they kept us honest with a solid passing game. The OL is just not very good at pass blocking. Didn't help to loss Piersbacher, who was probably injured before the game even started, but they haven't been great with him anyway.

Ugly: As mentioned above - Hootie and Tony Brown. Bird thinks Hootie is a LB playing safety... But LB's actually hit people. Aside from having some really, really bad instincts, he is about as soft as any defender I've ever seen at UA. He doesn't lay the wood on ANYBODY. He's literally letting the play come to him and trying to survive. Throw in the fact that he has no ability to get off blocks and he was a serious liability yesterday. Tony Brown also struggles like hell to get off blocks and for all that aggression he doesn't tackle much either. Coverage he's below average. But this is what really pissed me off.... Anyone else noticed this guy took his helmet off to talk shit to the crowd after the first Hail Mary?! Could have, and should have been an extra 15 yard penalty as the game was not over. And what could he possibly be talking shit about when he was terrible all game? He just doesn't get it.

Holcombe was really bad. I think he's playing hurt... Saw him clutching his left arm in the first half and asked to come out. He's just not playing physical, slow to react, and has no chance to get off blocks. I've believed all along that Mosley is just not helpful in any way... He's yet to flash in like 9 games. Would love to see someone else get a shot... Can only play so many marginal dudes on 1 unit and be a great D.

Punting - I said it earlier this year and the LSU masked what's been a bad year for JK Scott. He's got something mental going on for sure. We really need him to get straightened out to finish the season.

Good: a comeback win that showed some guts.

Bad: missed holding calls. I was pissed during the game because our corners werent getting off blocks and defense wasn't in their lanes but after watch the film... massive holding and aggressive play by them explained it.

Ugly: daboll.. second half.. running it down their throat and then three straight throws and a missed field goal. A

Good - Another 10 win season

Bad - Miss. State was going to run the ball, we knew they were going to run the ball and we still couldn't stop them.

Ugly - Need to shore up the "Bad" statement ^^^^ before the Iron Bowl or it could get very ugly.

Hopefully, it was our wake-up call. A buddy went to the game and told me that two hours before the game, the jumbotrons were playing the au vs Ga game while we were warming up. Very smart on their part, imo.
