Good- Flipped the Script on OU from the regular season game... From the big special teams play to the Pick-6. Felt like the football gods were having some fun with how things played out tonight and decided to lean heavy into irony.
Down 17-0 and the crowd turned up to 10, the team didn't quit. In the end, it was the OU fans that filed out of the stadium with their heads down as time remained on the clock. THAT is Alabama football.
Ty Simpson. His pocket clock still isn't calibrated where it needs to be but his throws tonight were crisp and accurate. Down 17-0, he didn't panic. It wasn't pretty when he was pressured, but otherwise he was nearly perfect. And it was nice to see him complete some deeper passes too... he was 4 for 4 with a TD on throws of 20+ yards. I was really encouraged by his performance overall.
Lotzier Brooks was excellent. Daniel Hill played hard... Germie Bernaed had that massive catch (after the disappointing drop) to set Bama up for a TD.
Josh Cuevas... that dude gutted it out in a situation where he didn't have to play and nobody would have blamed him. He's still not 100% and already had one setback in practice, but he decided (without hesitation) to give them as much as he could, which was about half the snaps tonight. He should be even better off by the Rose Bowl. He's so important to this offense.
Alabama coming out in the 2nd half and playing
really well... that has been an obstacle most of the season... but the defense stood tall (enough) and the offense put up 17 points. 17 points is Bama's highest output in the 2nd half against an SEC opponent all season (UA had 16 against Vandy).
Lawson and Jefferson on defense... both were making plays. Zabien Brown had a monster game. Dijon Lee was solid. Keeley and Pierre had some nice moments.
Connor F'n Talty... fans wrote this kid off... I too had some doubts late in the year, but he's been rock solid since from auburn game until now and nailed some really big kicks. Good for him. He certainly outshined Mr. Groza Award winner on his own field.
Bad- Dropped passes killed drives and it wasn't just 1 player. I can remember 4 by different guys, most of which ended drives.
First down plays on offense, especially early on, were disastrous and kept Bama way too far behind the chains. First 6 drives of the game on 1st down... 2 runs (1 for 1 yard, 1 for 7 yards!!! and 4 pass attempts... 1 sack and 3 incompletions). This offense rolls a lot more smoothly when it isn't 2nd and 9. Bama's average 3rd down and distance for the game was 3rd and 7.7 yards, which is why they were only 2 for 12 for the game. Must be better there... I know it's hard without a good run game, but gotta figure it out going forward.
Ugly- Grubb has some Bill O'Brien in him. Stubborn as shit at times (especially on 1st downs), doesn't set things up consistently well, and doesn't use the screen game effectively (in part because they suck at blocking it and executing it as a whole [which is very surprising based on his/their history]). His red zone calls are really good for the most part, but the rest.. oof. Bottom line, he struggles without a consistent run game and that
must be fixed in 2025.
Notes- I need, well want, to know more about the sideline interference penalty. Mostly 2 things since I didn't have a good look at it from the Goodyear blimp camera... How close was the dude to being in the offical's area? Cause it was nowhere near the play, and 2 and most importantly, who was the culprit? Was he actually affiliated with UA? If not, and I don't know, but if not, what a sham.
Despite the previous comment, this year's Bama team has almost completely cleaned up the penalty problem that has plagued the last several UA squads.
This puts an abrupt halt to the
Venables owns DeBoer chatter... It doesn't put a stop to the,
OU has never won a playoff game, chatter.
Saw a couple of tweets during the 1st half of the game from some of the national media Beta Bros... Brett McMurphy and Stewart Mandal specifically. Shitting on Bama when they were down 17-0, trying to make jokes and be cute. It's always the same people. Fucking idiots.
Rose Bowl is up next. It won't be easy, but Bama can absolutely beat Indiana if they play clean, physical, and smart. And a win out there means a semifinal in Atlanta awaits (against the Texas Tech/Oregon winner)... that would be a nice little treat (where UA fans would fill the place) for Round 3 if Alabama can take care of business in Pasadena.
I can't wait to see and hear where Michigan fans and media has moved their goalposts to after this Bama win in terms of their coaching search. My guess, they'll act like DeBoer was in the palm of their hand but out of respect to UA and the playoffs, he won't sign with UM this time. And FWIW, if you buy that, or anything similar to that, you've been had.
