TUSCALOOSA Ala. – The No. 1-ranked Alabama women's golf team will be making its 13th consecutive appearance - and 14th overall - at the 2018 NCAA Women's Golf Championships. The Crimson Tide is one of 24 teams vying for the national championship, May 18-23, at the par-72, 6,328-yard Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. Alabama will tee off at 12:15 p.m. CT on Friday, May 18 and will be paired with No. 2 Arkansas and No. 3 UCLA in the first two rounds.

Alabama at the NCAA Championships
This will be Alabama's 14th national championships appearance and the 13th under head coach Mic Potter. The Crimson Tide has played in the NCAA championships in all 13 seasons of Potter's tenure and captured the school's first national title in 2012 in Franklin, Tenn. The Tide has finished in the top-15 in the last 10 tournaments, including a five-year run of top-10 placements from 2010-14. Alabama alum Emma Talley earned the Crimson Tide's first NCAA individual championship at the 2015 tournament in Bradenton, Fla. This will be Potter's 28th NCAA Championship appearance as a head coach. He led Furman to 15 appearances in his 22 seasons at the school.

Crimson Tide Boasts Three of the Nation's Top 20 Golfers
Junior Lauren Stephenson is the nation's No. 3 golfer in the latest Golfstat player rankings released May 9. Stephenson (69.60) is joined in the top 20 by sophomore Kristen Gillman (6th, 70.50) and junior Cheyenne Knight (19th, 71.43). Stephenson (second), Gillman (seventh) and Knight (17th) are also among the leaders in the latest Golfweek player rankings released May 10.

Alabama Wins Tallahassee Regional
Alabama advanced to this year's championship by winning the NCAA Tallahassee Regional by eight shots over runner-up Florida State. The Crimson Tide finished 33-under par (282-276-273/831) to set a school record for low score and low score vs. par in regional play. Alabama's 15-under par third round was also a UA regional record.

Gillman Qualifies for U.S. Open
Alabama's Kristen Gillman fired a 4-under par 140 to win the U.S. Women's Open qualifier at the Deerwood Club in Kingwood, Texas on May 14. Gillman's three-shot victory over Maria Fassi of Arkansas qualifies the sophomore for the 2018 U.S. Women's Open that will be played at the Shoal Creek Club, May 28-June 3, in Shoal Creek, Ala. This will be the fourth U.S. Women's Open in the last five years that has included an Alabama golfer in the field. Emma Talley and Janie Jackson qualified in 2014 and Lauren Stephenson qualified in 2016 and 2017.

Stephenson Named to WGCA Player of the Year Watch List
Alabama junior Lauren Stephenson is among six golfers named to the 2017-18 PING WGCA Division I Player of the Year Award Watch List, the Women's Golf Coaches Association announced May 16. Joining Stephenson on the watch list are Maria Fassi of Arkansas, Andrea Lee of Stanford, Leona Maguire of Duke and Lilia Vu and Patty Tavatanakit of UCLA. The winner of the PING Player of the Year Award will be announced following the conclusion of medalist play at the NCAA Championships. The award is presented annually by the WGCA to the best player in Division I women's golf.

No. 1 Alabama Women’s Golf Team Opens NCAA Championships Play Friday - Alabama Athletics

They finished the first round in second place, one stroke behind USC. I think they have another round of stroke play and then the top 8 advance to up to three rounds of match play, quarters, semis and finals.

Alabama in Second Place after First Round of NCAA Women’s Golf Championships
Cheyenne Knight’s 2-under par day has Tide one shot off the lead

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Alabama Crimson Tide is one shot off the lead after the first round of the 2018 NCAA Women's Golf Championships on Friday. The top-ranked Tide (292) turned in a 4-over par round at the par-72, 6,328-yard Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., and trails first round leader and sixth-ranked USC (291) by one shot heading to Saturday's second round.

"It was pretty solid," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "You can look at it and say we were at 7-under at one time but I think the front played a lot harder than the back and I also think the scores were a function of the wind picking up as well."

Alabama was led by junior All-SEC standout Cheyenne Knight (70) who finished the day at 2-under par and was one of just 10 golfers in the 132-woman field to shoot below par. Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest (65) leads the individual standings at 7-under par. Kupcho's score equals the women's collegiate course record at Karsten Creek.

"It was a good day today," Knight said following her round. "I hit a lot of fairways and greens and that gave me a lot of birdie opportunities. I was very mentally prepared and picked a lot of small targets. It feels good to shoot an under par round and see us in second place."

The Crimson Tide opened the day on the back nine and was at 7-under par at the turn thanks to Knight's 3-under par effort over the first nine holes and an eagle by freshman Angelica Moresco on the par-5 18th hole.

The front nine proved to be the trickier part of the course and the Tide was only able to convert three birdie opportunities over the last nine holes after rolling in 12 in addition to Moresco's eagle to open the day on the back nine.

"This course will jump up and grab you," Potter added. "You have to be patient, not get frustrated and take advantage of your opportunities along the way because you can get them here."

Sophomore Kristen Gillman (73) was the Tide's No. 2 finisher at 1-over par and is tied for 19th place. Junior Lauren Stephenson (74) is tied for 28th at 2-over par. Moresco carded a 3-over par 75 and is tied for 35th. Senior Lakareber Abe(76) is tied for 51st at 4-over par.

Following USC and Tide in the team standings are No. 3 UCLA (294) in third place at 6-over par, Kent State (296) in fourth place at 8-over par and No. 4 Duke (298) in fifth at 10-over par.

Alabama will open Saturday's second round beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT and will again be paired with Arkansas and UCLA.

Alabama in Second Place after First Round of NCAA Women’s Golf Championships - Alabama Athletics

Alabama Out to an Eight-Shot Lead after Three Rounds at NCAA Women’s Golf Championships
Cheyenne Knight tied for the individual lead heading into Monday’s fourth round

STILLWATER, Okla. – The top-ranked Alabama women's golf team turned in one of only two under par rounds in the 24-team field on Sunday to move out to an eight-shot lead after three rounds at the NCAA Women's Golf Championships in Stillwater, Okla.

The Crimson Tide is now 2-under par for the tournament after shooting a 4-under 284 during its third round performance and boasts a 54-hole total of 862 (292-286-284). Alabama is poised to advance to the match play portion of the national championships for the first time since the since the NCAA adopted the current format in 2015.

"A course like this, it really separates the good ball strikers," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "The ones who can drive it in play, the ones that control their ball in the wind and have good putting touch. There are All-Americans, Curtis Cup players, Palmer Cup players on this team. That's kind of what you expect from great players. Just let them go and let them play."

Junior Cheyenne Knight (70-69-70/209) ended the day tied with Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho for the lead in the individual standings at -7 after a 2-under par round. The Aledo, Texas, native's three-round score equals her school NCAA tournament record for a 54-hole total, set at the 2016 NCAA Championships at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.

Knight is seeking to join former UA All-American Emma Talley as the school's second NCAA individual champion. Talley won medalist honors at the 2015 NCAA Championships at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.

"It would be amazing to join Emma as a national champion," Knight said. "She has always been my role model, both on and off the course. To put my name next to hers would be such an honor."

Tide junior Lauren Stephenson (74-69-70/213) and sophomore Kristen Gillman (73-72-70/213) matched Knight's performance Sunday with both carding rounds of 2-under for the day. Stephenson is now tied for fifth place at -3 overall, four shots off the lead. Gillman is tied for seventh at -1 on the par 72, 6,328-yard Karsten Creen layout. Freshman Angelica Moresco (75-76-78/229) is tied for 75th at +13 and senior Lakareber Abe (76-81-74/231) is at +15 and tied for 91st place.

"We've played well this year and have a lot of confidence in what we're doing," Potter said. "They're probably going to tell you that they have a chip on their shoulder and all that but they're really good at going out here and playing golf and trusting in their ability."

Today's performance by Alabama included a 6-under par back nine from its four scoring golfers. That continues a streak of strong play on holes 10-18 as the Tide's top four each day have combined to shoot -16 on the back nine over the first three rounds.

"I don't know if the holes are easier (on the back nine) and I'm not sure they are," Potter added. "It was an opposite wind today so it's not like you're catching all downwind holes on the back. I just feel if we can minimize the damage on the front, they play well on the back for whatever reason, I'm not sure what it is."

At 2-under par, the Crimson Tide (292-286-284/862) has an eight-shot lead over second place UCLA (294-279-297/870), which is at +6. The Bruins entered the day with a seven-shot lead over the Tide after a course record 9-under par round Saturday but ballooned to +9 Sunday as Alabama took control of the team race. Ninth-ranked Arizona (301-291-288/880) is in third place at +16, followed by Northwestern (299-293-290/882) in third at +18 and first round leader USC (291-298-296/885) in fifth at 21-over par.

In addition to determining the 2018 NCAA women's individual champion, Monday's final round of stroke play will qualify the top eight teams in the standings for Tuesday's match play quarterfinals.

Alabama will open Monday's final round starting at 12:50 p.m. CT and will be paired with UCLA and Arizona. Following the conclusion of the fourth round, the NCAA will present the medalist award to the individual champion and hold the draw to set the line-ups for the match play quarterfinals.
Coverage of Monday's round will air live on the Golf Channel beginning at 3 p.m. CT.

Alabama Out to an Eight-Shot Lead after Three Rounds at NCAA Women’s Golf Championships - Alabama Athletics

Women take out Kent State 4-1 in Match play quarterfinals and will face USC in the semifinals. Stanford awaits the winner of UCLA/Arizona in the other semifinal. ULCA/'Zona are currently 2-2 and All Square thru 17. Ladies will tee off in about 40 minutes.

Arizona took out UCLA 3-2-0 and Stanford defeated NW 3-2-0. Guess NW needs wind and rain to win.

I am kicking myself for not being there. Just returned from a trip to Salt Lake City and could have arranged to be in Stillwater. PLAN AHEAD!
