🏈 🔎 Looking ahead to this weekend:Vanderbilt -- How does Alabama match up with the Commodores?

Did he play for Miss State?
NM St.
I would take a little caution over the extreme optimism you have been exuding.
Is it extreme optimism or asking the same question, repeatedly, with no legitimate counter or answer?

We've seen Vandy is now beating the big boys. Categorically false. We've also seen the answer, "but they only lost to Texas by ___" when asked whom have they beaten outside of one game last year. The UofSC win with Doty behind center isn't an answer. (You probably didn't have any kids when he took his first collegiate snap. 🙃 )

You said the exact same thing about Florida State, Castellanos and we see how that turned out. Hell, I said the same thing about them. That's all I'm saying. Maybe this will be a blowout win for us, and I would be the happiest person for that, but I'm also not coming into this laid back with a drink in my hand and my belly sticking out flipping the channel during the game because I think I know what's coming. Vanderbilt isn't Georgia in the fact that Georgia loves balance and a pro-style offense with Bobo. Vanderbilt will throw the kitchen sink at us and run it 100 times and throw 0 if that helps them win. I think we win the game, but as I stated above and many times before, I'm not sitting there counting my chickens. Done that with last year's team and even this team and lost some money with that mentality.

I also want to note, a couple of y'all keep throwing out "playing with the big boys". I'm not gonna sit there and consider us the big boys anymore. After last year and already losing one this year, we are not that. Vanderbilt has beaten us. They smashed South Carolina, an extremely similar South Carolina team that should have beat us last year in Tuscaloosa. To be fair, I don't consider anyone this year as "big boys" in college football, because the talent pool has been diluted and spread out and no one looks above anyone else to me.

I said the same thing about Florida State, continuously. And this ain't it.

I said they had a HUGE amount of transfers and I didn't see that team gelling quickly. I mentioned both the injuries in spring and fall camps as reasons to suspect it wasn't moving along quickly.

I expected a win. I said I expected them to be good by mid season. What I didn't do is compare them to the two win team of '24. I didn't mention, or even look, at their schedule from '24. The only thing I looked at from '24 was the story behind their QB being benched and his transfer circumstances and blow back.

That's what I said about FSU; in the whole nutshell.

On that note, I didn't bring up Vandy's '24 schedule as a comparison until hearing "they are beating the big boys." Which they aren't; and haven't sans one win against a dysfunctional mess with points being given out like Halloween candy.

I've said the same thing about Vandy all week. The numbers for this season look good. Against whom?

It appears that it's going to be a repeat of the hyperbole of the last two seasons as well. More of "defense sucks" when the focus is singular.

Oh, I've been about to point out that Vandy's position groups are better than Bama in several areas. But, as soon as I started looking at offenses it was met with "I want OL to DL breakdowns." Which, can't be done. Vandy has one of the better linebackers in the country. I'm supposed to compare and contrast him against whom? Josh? Ryan? Jam? Who do I use as a comparison to Jam from Georgia State? Do I contrast how Vandy played Sellers (for a couple of drives) when Sellers and Ty have nothing in common? The offenses are almost polar opposites.

All there is to look at is resume. Their opponents have been of the Family Dollar variety for fall outerwear vs the Hawes and Curtis on their schedule from here out.

Maybe our fans can make a difference.
This is a comment from Wednesday I left alone. It's a wild oddity, really. Out of their last 18 games only two have been in front of crowds over 80,000. Four, over 60,000. That's nine games with attendance numbers in the 30K range.

Bama had three games under 80,000 last season; Vandy, the bowl game, and Wisconsin at full capacity (76K.)

No one has said that, Casey.

Ok, well what message are you sending with your comments? You have given Vanderbilt zero credit outside of you saying they have a good linebacker. So what tone and message are you sending with everything you have said? I took it all as, "they don't play anybody, don't have a chance, don't matchup at all with our statistics".

I have looked at their competition and asked what can we draw from these numbers? It's yet to be answered.

I've said, on more than one occasion, I don't know.

If there is a dispute here I find it in this column.

A large majority of what is being said about Vandy is based on last year's loss. Very early on in this thread the word was proven.

"I took it as." Do I not, routinely, point to things and say, "this doesn't make sense?"

If Bama plays like they have since FSU this game won’t be close. Vandy is decent, but I’m not about to anoint them some next best thing in the SEC. Pavia is a decent QB, but Ty is much better, their WRs are decent, but ours are better, their defense is something for sure, but our’s is much better. Yes, they beat us last year, but Ty is a better QB than what started last year. Pavia did give Bama material….”if we play how we should this game won’t be close, we’ll beat them”

The concerns...

Vandy has an older, veteran team.... tons of 5th year and Grad Sr. players. Overall, this is a generational team for Vandy.

Alabama's injury/depth issues at EDGE plus James Smith missing the first half vs. a heavy run team. Not ideal.

Vandy runs a ton of play action (1/3 of their pass plays are PA) and misdirection, even with things like screens. Like Bama, they utilize pre snap motion heavily. UA defenders have been way too susceptible to eye candy, and they've been over aggressive at times... if that keeps up tomorrow, Vandy will move the chains at will. I'll add, they attack the boundary with runs and dump off passes more than Bama does... both teams will use screens, but Vandy uses the eye candy to try and create space outside the tackles, and it usually gets them easy yards. But nearly every play they run on offense has at least some degree of deception... even their draw play runs are out of the ordinary. And yes, they will try the shovel pass to see if Bama can stop it. Same with some various option plays.

On Pavia specifically, it's easier said than done obviously, but putting pressure on him in the pocket is when he gets uncomfortable and forces things. He doesn't like taking sacks and doesn't like throwing the ball away. They roll him out of the pocket a lot, but when he drops straight back, he becomes vulnerable. All 3 of his interceptions this season have come when he's been under pressure.

The positives...

DeBoer vs. A ranked team. DeBoer's guys usually win.

DeBoer & Alabama playing at home. DeBoer's guys and Alabama usually win.

Bray Hubbard is built for this type of game, and you'll recall he was mostly a special teams contributor only last season up until the Tennessee game when he was forced into action. He played 1 defensive snap against Vandy last year. This year, barring injury, he won't come off the field. They moved him around a good bit last week in Athens, and you can expect more of that against the Commodores. He's Bama's Defensive Pavia.

There was discussion previously in this thread about Deontae Lawson and him moving outside to EDGE some. IMO, we will absolutely see some of that tomorrow, I think Wommack basically admitted as much in his press conference earlier this week. Remember, it was after the Vandy debacle last year that Jihaad Campbell's reps at OLB really ramped up (he didn't really play outside against Vandy). But it is a spot that Lawson has been getting reps at for a while, even going back to last season in some cases. Which brings me to my next point...

Bama (defensively) has been adjusting to and working on improving against Vandy's offense since they played last year. Additionally, the FSU game and postgame cleanup will prove to be valuable reps for Bama's defense as they take on Vandy again tomorrow.

I like where Bama is at offensively right now and I like the trajectory of the team overall since week 1. I feel good about the Ty Simpson and Ryan Grubb partnership. Sure looks like we are seeing some actual leadership emerge on the field for the first time in a long time. They've fooled me before, so I'm still hesitant to believe much until I see much... but I do like the track they are on. If they stay on it, they'll be just fine.

From "what have you done for me lately" to "I remember when..." Interesting shift watching peoples opinions.

I'm of the opinion they need three stops. Four, and it's a 17 point game.

I’m pretty confident Bama will handle business. But there are a couple of benchmarks I’d like to see them meet before I start to toss out some previous results (data). This month of games will answer those questions.
