🏈 🔎 Looking ahead to this weekend:Vanderbilt -- How does Alabama match up with the Commodores?

@bamaledge here's where it gets a little funky doing match up comparisons (in my world,at least)

I look at Ty and Diego playing QB and Ty is the better QB.
I look at the receiving corps and it's Bama over Vandy, hands down.
I look at the RB's and Vandy has the edge in production: led by their QB.

So, in terms of total offense Ty and Diego are practically tied (a 2.2 yard per game difference.) But in position groups it's a two to one advantage to Bama.
The offenses do not play each other... Their offense against our "average" defense is what to look at.

With that said there is never an excuse to lose to Vandy. Was not last year and would not be this year. However until CKD coached team plays well after a big win and I see more out of the defense (a miracle is not goint to happen), Vandy stands a chance. With our Offense it may be a 45 to 30 game which I hate.

Average defense? Check the stats.. #1 in passing defense.

No complaints on passing defense. There is also this weird thing called total D and that includes rush defense. I said average because if you take mediocre and good you get average.
Total yards allowed, we are 19 at 274 ypg. Good, not great, certainly not average. Vandy is 21.
Total passing yards allowed, we are number 2 in nation, which is outstanding. Vandy is 55th.
Total rushing yards allowed, 90 out of 134, That's not average, it's bad. Vandy is 12.

Scoring D, we are at 28, 16.5 ppg. I'd say 28th is still Good, not the expectation, and certainly moving toward average. Vandy is 31.

If the passing game produces as it has the last several games, we win it going away. I think our tendency is to pass intermediate to set up the short pass, as opposed to the run. The days of us being balanced on offense, I think, are over. The ball control passing attack we saw in the first two drives against Georgia accomplishes many of the same goals as a Saban offense of old. Plus, remember how many times under Saban did we start passing against the stout lines, making the DL run to the boundaries to wear them out. LSU comes to mind.

Take out the Florida game and the number is much better.

I’d love to see us building on the running game against Vandy this week. I really have no clue about their depth, but I would imagine it’s not great.

Pavia won’t be intimidated by BDS like most QB’s are/would be. Vandy is way more talented than Vandy’s of the past, but it’s more their mindset of believing they can beat teams…Vandy has never had that.

Vandy won’t just roll over…we’re going to have to take it from them.

If we come in with that mindset, we’ll win, and win big potentially, but we can’t afford to keep them in the game and give them more confidence.

Also, keep getting better every week.

I remember some line in a fight movie....talking about a massive underdog..."hes to stupid to know that he should lose"...
Vandy kinda plays like that....
"Hey ...you are vanderbilt.....take your licking and go home"

How do we match up with Vanderbilt?

I know they haven’t played any teams that match up with our talent but they’re not the Vanderbilt of old.

Offensively I think we will be fine.

Defensively our scheme is not setup well to stop the inside read. Generally you have to disrupt so the ILB’s can sweep and tackle. Setting the edge is also important. I know this game has been circled for some time and our defense did step up when it needed to against UGA, but, we are down several interior lineman and need our young wolfs to set the edge. The def will probably struggle in this game but I know they will be motivated.

The nerds model shows this which makes me think the game might be a shootout of sorts.

In an offensive game you have to start looking somewhere and I chose the two offenses to start. As mentioned a few times in this thread, I've pointed to the defenses Vandy has faced.

A "match up" comparison on the two lines facing each other Saturday is an exercise in futility. If you insist on using last year as part of this we have to take into account they only averaged three yards a rush last season. It's over six this year; but against whom? We could see as many as 20 rotate on both sides when Bama has the ball. A comparison of ... ? Are you looking for a LT vs RDE comparison?

"The offenses do not play each other." Gee manetti, Eddie.

When it comes to match-ups between two teams like we're talking about.

If you take four offensive groups, three defensive, and special teams and give the nod to one team or another in those groups? The majority of the time it'll spell out your winner.

Last weekend was an outlier with Bama's three to UGA's five. The weakness of comparing the position groups last weekend? That was discussed, A LOT, when we talked about Bama's QB and WR's going against UGA's DB's. (All three had the check mark by Bama in position groups comparisons.) UGA got the nod on the DL. It was cautioned that's not the win some thought it would be (even when compared to Bama's.)

I haven't done more than merely glance at Vandy on defense this season.
