It's pitching and hitting. The team is in a bit of a funk. On the pitching side, the starters are putting the team in really bad spots early in the game by giving up runs right out of the gate. Turns into a game of catch up for the hitters. But the hitting since the A&M series has been way too inconsistent... Bama has averaged just 3 runs in their last 5 losses. They're leaving too many guys on base in key spots and taking way too many called 3rd strikes. They also are being a bit stubborn at times and need to take what the defense is giving them... like when Hodo refuses to go against the shift (that's a minor gripe, but if you want to keep an inning going it wouldn't hurt to make some things happen when they give you that much freedom). As for the pitching, they are better than they've showed and someone (starter) needs to step up soon. Quick will get the chance tomorrow. But when they fall behind early, especially on Friday night, it puts a lot of stress on the pen and more often than not, you end up throwing the non-high leverage guys in order to save arms. That usually just leads to more water over the damn.

I will say tonight at least, Bama had some shitty luck early and it sorta spiraled out of control from there. At the plate, they had some really hard hit balls, but right at the fielders (especially LF). A near miss on a defensive catch by Snell in the 1st led to a big inning for State, when a grab would have likely (IMO) kept them scoreless.

The team probably carries 15 pitchers. This is where coach has to give some other guys a shot. Is he doing that or sticking to his "opening day" rotation? Some coaches are hard headed with how they manage a game and it gets frustrated as heck.

Got a friend who has a son at Georgia State and I paid close attention to them last year, and their head coach was a buffoon with how stubborn he was with his pitching rotation (and where he played his outfielders). He'd let them team get down 5 and 6-0 before he'd make a change in the first inning or two, and then would proceed to do that for 75% of the season. Just ridiculous instead of trying new arms. I'm all for "watching new players make some errors" when a team is struggling.

He may be giving another guy a shot on Sunday... he's had a long leash with Adams. Which is hard to blame based on how he pitched last year and in the fall... he was trending to be a late round 1 guy this spring. I do think they can do better than Jason Jackson at pitching coach though... for several reasons. I really appreciate what he did holding things together and making a little postseason run when the Bohannon stuff hit the fan, but I'm ready to move on.

Bama wins, 4-1.... said last night that someone needed to step up for Alabama the Bama pitching staff, and Riley Quick did that today. He gave up a solo HR to the MSU leadoff batter to begin the game, but then settled in... it was best control he's had all season, and when he can put his pitches where he wants, he's tough to hit. Quick ended up going 5 1/3 and just surrendering that lone run. Hagan Banks tossed 2 hitless & scoreless innings of relief and the Ozmer got the 9th to close it out. The Bama bats were not exactly electric, and especially early in the game, they left some guys on base. But overall, they were able to scrape together 4 runs, 3 of which were driven in by the leadoff hitter Bonomolo Jr. The series is evened up at 1-1 now, rubber game tomorrow afternoon.

Yesterday, Quick stepped up for Bama on the mound. Fay got the start today and gave this team a good chance. The Tide has only 2 hits on the day (should probably be 3, but 1 was charged as an error)... Still, someone(s) at the plate needs to step up now, or this series will belong to the Bulldogs... MSU is up 3-2 in the 8th.

Gonna need at least 2 runs now... MSU up 4-2, B9. Tide has 3 outs to make something happen...

Ugh. MSU wins 4-2 and takes the series (the 2nd home series Bama has lost now).

The funk continues at the plate, despite 2 days in a row of pretty good pitching. Bama managed just 2 hits all game and never really threatened a big inning. State only had 5 hits on their side of things, but 3 of those were HR's. Bama plays UAB at home Tuesday night, then it's off to Baton Rouge for 3 this weekend... so they need to recalibrate sooner, rather than later.
