| FTBL what kind of qb does bama have for next year

i will second Grant's unofficial endorsement of Darrah having the strongest arm. from what i've seen, Darrah has (forgive the cliche) a cannon for an arm... his velocity is very much like Brodie's but with a little better loft on the long balls.

A-Day is going to cause a stir. i guarantee it.

I've heard horror stories about Greg since he's been at 'Bama. His INT against Arkansas this year looked down right scary.

I'll give the young man his rightful and respectful shot, but he needs to do better than what most have seen.

When JPW was going through his nightmare last season, and never got pulled, I think that showed most people all they needed to know.

Just my thoughts. :)

Saban said many times that it was JPW's LEADERSHIP that separated him from the rest of the qbs, it wasn't his arm. Greg was/is a young qb, that hadn't established that role yet (backups rarely do). Keep in mind, according to Terry Grant, off the record, Darrah has the best arm on the team, but you didn't see him play either. And that INT was one of the only times he looked bad, and it really was just a busted play where the defense read it perfectly. He tried to throw it to Maze I believe, who didn't really cut right. It was just an ugly play all around. Keeping in mind what Saban has said in the past, if Star can display a lot of maturity and leadership, he may could possibly pass up McElroy even if his talents aren't on the same level. Just some thoughts.

As for the Star Jackson being able to run talk. As a recruit Star was first listed as the #2 dual threat qb in the country. I believe it was after the elite 11 camp when they began listing him as pro-style. Basically, the guy can do both, but he mostly just uses his feet to get him out of trouble. The kid showed a lot of maturity and leadership just during recruiting, so the sky could be the limit as he begins developing.

I don't think he was listed at #2. The reason I say that is because Rivals gets into position break downs after their 250 is released which was in June last year and the Elite 11 was is March. But, it really doesn't matter...it's one of those trivia things now, ya know.

WVU, and a few other schools, like his mobility after his junior season. After the camps in the late spring and early summer you saw the schools recruiting him as a QB, not as an athlete.

At least, that's how I remember it...

Kid was good on the basketball court...and I love seeing that kind of experience with any player in any position because it normally means excellent footwork.

FWIW, the best comparison I've seen in this thread is to DJ Shockley. In fact, that's exactly the pitch Coach Bobo at UGA was using when they were recruiting Star.

If A-day causes a stir I hope to God I can avoid clicking on any of those threads.

A distinction needs to be made here.

Have you ever seen those game where you can throw a football or baseball at a canvas and it tells you the MPH you just threw the ball?

In that type of game, Darrah would win versus Star the majority of the time. There is a difference in the "strength" of their arms...but, it's not a difference like Brodie compared to Tyler.

When it comes to both of those guys lining up and throwing to receivers, those passes being in the correct place so the WR can catch the ball and then turn it up field Star is going to win those contests hands down. (and he has since summer camp, fall practice and throughout this season)

You want a '09 season prediction? Depending on the opponent, there will be a battle on whether AJ or Thomas leads the scout team in a given week.

i didn't say that i thought Darrah would be the starter, but he most definitely has a quicker pass.

i would like to see any of the three GM, SJ or TD start. i love em all. i'm excited about each of them.

Star seems to have improved on his trajectory and arm strength since coming to Bama if you compare how he looks now throwing the ball to how his highlight reels from HS. he tended to float the ball a bit on the short routes in a lot of those clips.

not many people gave Hollingsworth much credit until he came in a proved himself to be a gamer so... i don't count out any of the QBs until Coach Saban makes his pick for the first snap of the '09 season. Gary Hollingsworth was my hero as a kid because of the hill he climbed to play at Bama.

i enjoyed watching hollingsworth play that season too, although i will credit alot of his sucess to homer smith. remember, homer smith put jay barker in the top five for the heisman.. i think jay barker was a great qb, but i don't think he was a very skilled passer until smith coached him.

am i right in thinking that barker had a limited highschool career?.. i was one game away from playing against trussville barker's senior year i really regret not winning that game.

He was listed at the #2 dual threat qb... I just can't remember when they changed it. I was just guessing it was around the time of the elite 11 camp.

I can't recall the play Greg threw an INT on vs Arkansas. I remember he had the INT, but don't recall the circumstances.

Greg is a smart one. I say that because some of the mistakes we saw out of JP when he was hurried aren't the kind of mistakes I would expect to see out of Greg.

FWIW, and I know it was against WKU, he looked pretty damn good in that game.

The pick against the Hogs was the first snap he took if memory serves. It was a 7-10 yard route that was right to the DB. It was a joke. He never threw a pass again in the game.
Not saying he can't be great, but he will take the controls with a shaky hand.

HOLY COW Bryan! That's one play, ONE. I know that he has not take a heap of snaps but does that one snap look anything like his complete body of work? Numerically speaking JPW has done more scary things than the McElroy, yet JPW holds a passing record or two and has his team #1 in the country. Give McElroy the spring and summer and he will be fine.
