šŸˆ Update: Hugh Freeze verbally agrees 4 year extension at Ole Miss

Best available job open so far, sure. I think a good coach knows that they can win there and recruiting will be easier than Michigan (which I assume will be open sooN).

Nussmeier has been following McElwain. Time for McElwain to follow Nussmeir to Michigan. As HC, not OC. Could keep Nussmeier as OC.

McElwain was OC at Fresno in 2007 and was replaced by Nussmeier in 2008 when McElwain came to Bama. Again in 2012, McElwain was replaced at Bama by Nussmeier when McElwain went to Colorado State.

So this would be a 33% raise for Freeze, he's making ~$3m a year now and he'd get a bump up to $4m. Mississippi State law maxes out at $4m.

Ole Miss and head coach Hugh Freeze remain in contract negotiations, though the University is increasingly optimistic that Freeze will remain in Oxford, reports Hugh Kellenberger of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.

The two sides are making progress on an extension to keep Freeze — who’s in the third year of a four-year deal — at the school.

Memphis radio station WHBQ reported late Monday morning that Freeze had agreed to an extension that would raise his salary to $4 million per year and give him an additional $500,000 for assistant coaches.

Kellenberger, citing a source with knowledge of the negotiations, reports there is no signed agreement.

Freeze was said to have been mulling offers from both Florida and Ole Miss on Sunday, according to report by SBNation late Sunday evening. The report detailed that the Gators had offered Freeze somewhere in the neighborhood of $4.2 and $4.3 million per year.

Florida’s interest in Freeze is not in doubt, and while Kellenberger says there may, in fact, be mutual interest, Florida’s search did not stop with the third-year Ole Miss head coach. Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel reported over the weekend that Freeze was on Gators’ athletic director Jeremy Foley’s short list.

Ole Miss athletic director Ross Bjork told reporters earlier this month that Ole Miss could get within $4 million per year on a new four-year deal for Freeze, the maximum under Mississippi state law.

Bjork also said last month he had begun contract talks with Freeze’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, and that he was confident is Ole Miss’ ability to compete financially in order to retain Freeze.

OXFORD – The future for Hugh Freeze as Ole Miss football coach is officially unresolved.

However, Daily Journal sources Monday evening said Freeze has reached a verbal agreement to sign a contract extension that will play him at least $4 million a year. He’s expected to sign the deal soon.

Freeze’s current contract pays him $3 million a year.

Monday was a day of reports and rebuttals but did not include an announcement from Ole Miss regarding Freeze’s status or word from Freeze that he did not consider himself a candidate at Florida.

A report late Sunday night by the website SBNation.com that Freeze had been offered the Florida job with a salary of roughly $4.3 million was refuted early Monday by Florida through its official football Twitter account.

The school released a statement saying, ā€œWe have made no job offers to anyone, and reports claiming that are false.ā€

Memphis radio station WHBQ later Monday morning reported that Freeze had signed an extension with Ole Miss that would pay him $4 million a year and give him an additional $500,000 a year more for his assistant coaches.

Memphis is home base for Freeze’s legal representation, agent Jimmy Sexton.

Daily Journal sources have indicated the money for assistants could exceed $500,000.

Ole Miss athletics director Ross Bjork told the Daily Journal on Nov. 12, the week of the Rebels’ open date, that he had already begun discussions with Sexton regarding a raise and extension for Freeze and that he was comfortable with his ability to compete financially in a day of rising salaries.

ā€œThe new number became $3 million last year. We’re at $3 million. So what’s the new number (now)? Is it closer to 4? I don’t know that 5 is the new norm yet,ā€ he said. ā€œWe’re committed to playing and competing at the highest level.ā€

Also late Sunday Yahoo sports reported that Colorado State coach Jim McElwain, the former Alabama offensive coordinator, had emerged as what the website called a ā€œleadingā€ candidate for the Florida job.

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is also a reported candidate.

In December of 2011 Freeze inherited a program that had just finished 2-10 and 0-8 in SEC play. The conference losing streak would reach 16 games before he guided the Rebels past Auburn at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in 2012.

Freeze is 24-14 and just led Ole Miss, a 5-3 in the league, to a better than .500 record in SEC play for the first time since 2008. He is 11-13 in SEC games.

We all know how this works. No, Florida has not, through any official channels, offered Freeze the job. More than likely, someone has spoken to Jimmy Sexton, or one of his associates, about a certain amount of money being available to Freeze if he would come to Florida. Since Freeze is staying put, everyone can deny that an offer was made.
