OXFORD ā The future for Hugh Freeze as Ole Miss football coach is officially unresolved.
However, Daily Journal sources Monday evening said Freeze has reached a verbal agreement to sign a contract extension that will play him at least $4 million a year. Heās expected to sign the deal soon.
Freezeās current contract pays him $3 million a year.
Monday was a day of reports and rebuttals but did not include an announcement from Ole Miss regarding Freezeās status or word from Freeze that he did not consider himself a candidate at Florida.
A report late Sunday night by the website
SBNation.com that Freeze had been offered the Florida job with a salary of roughly $4.3 million was refuted early Monday by Florida through its official football Twitter account.
The school released a statement saying, āWe have made no job offers to anyone, and reports claiming that are false.ā
Memphis radio station WHBQ later Monday morning reported that Freeze had signed an extension with Ole Miss that would pay him $4 million a year and give him an additional $500,000 a year more for his assistant coaches.
Memphis is home base for Freezeās legal representation, agent Jimmy Sexton.
Daily Journal sources have indicated the money for assistants could exceed $500,000.
Ole Miss athletics director Ross Bjork told the Daily Journal on Nov. 12, the week of the Rebelsā open date, that he had already begun discussions with Sexton regarding a raise and extension for Freeze and that he was comfortable with his ability to compete financially in a day of rising salaries.
āThe new number became $3 million last year. Weāre at $3 million. So whatās the new number (now)? Is it closer to 4? I donāt know that 5 is the new norm yet,ā he said. āWeāre committed to playing and competing at the highest level.ā
Also late Sunday Yahoo sports reported that Colorado State coach Jim McElwain, the former Alabama offensive coordinator, had emerged as what the website called a āleadingā candidate for the Florida job.
New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is also a reported candidate.
In December of 2011 Freeze inherited a program that had just finished 2-10 and 0-8 in SEC play. The conference losing streak would reach 16 games before he guided the Rebels past Auburn at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in 2012.
Freeze is 24-14 and just led Ole Miss, a 5-3 in the league, to a better than .500 record in SEC play for the first time since 2008.
He is 11-13 in SEC games.
