Got hurt in practice before bowl.....and Sloan got hurt in first quarter...and here came Joe.... orange bowl vs texas.... first night orange bowl if I remember...
Miami newspaper...headlines next morning ..."Steers fall onAlabama"...you know from song "Stars fall on Alabama"... and yes....i really was there...

Well Joe Willie got 400K out of his deal and the rest is history......and he got a ugly green Lincoln Continental as well ( my best friend and I actually got to sit in that car in 65....remind me to tell that story). RIP Ray Abruzzese.

As for Joe, back then they had like 17 rounds in the draft and also there were two leagues, so if one did not take you, the other could. Joe was the poster boy for the younger, less respected league. That is partly why he became the highest paid player in history, to that point.

As for him scoring on that goalline play. It is true but what Coach Bryant told him is also true, score standing up, leave no doubt. He did not mean just Joe on that play, better blocking, leaves no doubt, better coaching, leaves no doubt. Beat a team by three scores and one missed ref call means nothing.
