🌎 The 'arguments' about what should be covered by SNAP benefits intrigues me. And yes, I believe there's some personal bias here.

A family of four receives, on average, just under $1000 a month from SNAP. According to the USDA, the average family of four spends that much on groceries per month.

Now we're seeing them remove overly priced junk foods.
I don't think I've ever spent that much on groceries. The most I can remember spending is almost $500 at Costco. Granted, it's just the 2 of us and not 4. And there are no kids/teenagers here that eat everything in sight. Still... And that $500 bought enough food to last months.

Yes, Costco is a membership-based company that costs money to even get in the door. But that cost is only $60/year for the lowest tier. And that gets you in the store to buy anything they sell. And if you step up to the next tier, you get points on every single purchase. And those points can go towards paying the annual membership fee...which is what I do. And I buy enough to pay for the yearly fee ($120) almost entirely. And that's just for 2 people. So for a family of 4, you can EASILY buy enough to pay for the membership fee and then some. And anything left over can be put on a Costco Shop Card which can then be used in-store or online for any purchase.

Plus...$1.50 hotdogs 😁

I couldn't tell you how much I spend on groceries every month. I'd have to go back for a year and then figure out the average: it still wouldn't be accurate. When you spend cash at the Farmer's Market and that varies week to week. Then the grocery store. Then the meat market. Then my seafood addictions which are also cash.

I won't need to buy any meat or seafood for at least two months but I'll be at the markets more than once a week.

Here's' a question a bit off topic. If my "covered peril" has a deductible of $500, should I keep more than $500 worth of meats in the freezer at all times? Ya know, just to make it worth the trouble? 🙃

I should probably go to the one that's close to where I live. Unfortunately it's open only on Tuesdays from 3pm-6pm.

I love fresh vegetables (and fruits) and they taste SO much better than anything bought in a grocery store.

@Krimson and I were talking about this within the last month. I really am blessed in this regard.

After us talking about it for a few days now I can say I don't know how many there are. The farthest I've been to is about a 20 minute drive: closest might take 20 minutes if I rode my bicycle. It's a five minute drive. There are six that I can think of I've been to in the last year.

Seven days a week. More than seven in the area. Quite a few more.

There are markets I've been to I had forgotten about.

There's one about 10 or so minutes from here I haven't been to for years (traffic) and it is open six days a week; 8-7. It's an open air but covered market. The one at the fairgrounds on the weekend is as big as two Family Dollar's combined. No, more like three. It's all Mexican vendors by appearances but good lord at the selections!

There's one on Sunday's called the Sunday Brunch Farmers Market. Yes, they have brunch. And, a band. It's unique in that it has permanent vendors. A lot of craft places BUT some great fruit from a local farm. Also, some great fresh pasta's. Then there's mom and pop around the area.

Out of curiosity I ran a Google search on how many are open today in my area. 19. The farthest on Edisto Island: a little less than an hour.

Look at the shit in these groceries.

The tuna is healthier. The avocados are (what for I wonder, a dip?) The potatoes.

The rest is junk food.

Would this go on an EBT card?
🙃

If it's hot then no. But you can go to the frozen food and pick it up, go home and cook it. Now the woman with her food. You would think what she has is most healthy food. Not counting the soft drink, I.C, donuts. Just think what those other companies have put into that food to keep it fresh until ready to eat. So to me what is healthy?

$100. Sarcasm.

I saw yesterday when they were talking about the government shutdown that $8 billion a month is spent on SNAP benefits. My issue isn't the help but they're has to be a better answer than just giving people $8 billion a month continuously. I'd rather help with college, training, whatever so they could get a better job. Not sure what the solution is but there has to be a better one.

Here's irony.

Jimmy Carr has launched a new show called *Am I the Asshole.?" I just pulled it up and ...ain't gonna watch. It's doesn't hold a candle to 8 cats.

Let's take that $8 billion and give it in cash. Let's see who is hungry.

Can't confirm these numbers, but I have heard, read that illegals receive 51% while American citizens receive 49%.
With limited research what I found was undocumented aliens are not eligible but are getting them in a backdoor way by being part of a household that is getting Snap.
1.5 million noncitizens are receiving Snap benefits as are 2.2 million children who live with noncitizens as of 2022
