| RECRUIT Recruiting News: The Alabama class of 2017

D1/P5 football and hoops are all full rides...

Most lower levels have to split money up and use it wisely. Anything less than a full ride at this level is likely some type of academic scholarship, and wouldn't count towards the 85, which many times the athletic department can help coordinate.
The academic would count towards the 85 if he was recruited... if he wasn't recruited (walk-on), I think you can do it as a non-counter only until he plays a snap, then he's a counter.

There are some exception to those rules... they used to allow for the following, not sure if they still do:
  • Top 10% of the high school graduating class
  • Achieve a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.50
  • Score 1200 or higher on the SAT or ACT sum score of at least 105

Alabama recruit named national player of the year

Dylan Moses has been playing with high expectations for years. It happens when you're getting scholarship offers in middle school and getting ESPN Magazine covers as a high school freshman. Add another such honor for the Alabama recruit.

Moses was named Parade Magazine national player of the year for the 2017 signing class. The Baton Rouge product is already enrolled in Tuscaloosa in advance of next Wednesday's National Signing Day.

Moses is one of three Alabama early enrollees to make Parade's first-team high school All-American list. Running back Najee Harris and offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood also made the cut for the team that'll appear in the Feb. 5 issue of Parade Magazine. Athlete Jaylond Adams of Minor High School also made the first-team offense.

The magazine will feature a three-page spread on Moses with the linebacker appearing on the cover. He is currently ranked No. 13 in 247Sports' composite of national recruiting rankings. Harris is the highest-rated player on that list at No. 3. Harris is No. 1 in Rivals ranking with Moses checking in at No. 32.

Moses, Harris and Leatherwood are among the 12 Alabama freshmen who enrolled a semester early to participate in spring practice. They will make it official next Wednesday on National Signing Day.

Alabama currently has the No. 1 class in all major recruiting services.

Thanks for looking that stuff up. A few things:

1. Pretty tough to get an academic scholarship without those qualifications

2. "Recruited" is a funny word when you consider we have a kid who's been committed for almost a year that will blue shirt as a "non recruited" player.

The 20117 class has been a wild roller coaster ride from the beginning. Alabama has seen just about everything this recruiting cycle. The one constant that always remains is Alabama in position to sign the best class in the country.

Five-star DT Aubrey Solomon

Will Alabama add another elite DT?
Alabama is hoping to add at least one more interior defensive lineman in the 2017 class. Aubrey Solomon, five-star defensive tackle from Lee County High School in Leesburg, Georgia, expects to announce a decision prior to signing day. Alabama head coach Nick Saban along with the Tide's defensive staff with have an in-home visit with Solomon on Thursday.

Solomon's finalists are Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and USC. Most expect a decision to come down between the Crimson Tide and Wolverines. There is optimism on both sides.

Phidarian Mathis, four-star defensive tackle from Neville High School in Monroe, Louisiana, is another Tide target. Mathis took an official visit to Alabama this past weekend and expected to visit TCU this weekend. Alabama and LSU are the leaders for the Bayou State product. Alabama can't miss on Solomon and Mathis. The Tide needs to sign at least one of the two remaining targets.

Ray remains a must-get for Crimson Tide
LaBryan Ray, Rivals100 defensive end from James Clemens High School in Madison, Alabama, was also on campus for an official visit last weekend. He is set to visit Florida this weekend for his final visit. He visited Tennessee two weekends ago.

Ray has been a frequent visitor to Tuscaloosa. He also has a few close friends on Alabama's commitment list (Kyriq McDonald, Kendall Randolph).

Alabama needs an elite pass rusher at the defensive end position. Ray is a very talented prospect. He has been a major priority for the Crimson Tide for the early start of his recruitment. Tennessee and Florida are definitely in the race. However, the prediction for him to sign with Alabama remains the same.

Henry Ruggs
Nick Lucero/Rivals.com
Will Bama close with Ruggs and Smith?
Henry Ruggs, four-star wide receiver from Lee High School in Montgomery, Alabama, and DeVonta Smith, Rivals100 wide receiver from Amite High School in Louisiana, originally planned to announce their decision in August. Both were ready to commit to the Crimson Tide. Both decided to wait.

Other top programs made strong efforts in luring the best receivers in Alabama and Louisiana. Ruggs has done a good job of keeping people guessing on his decision. He has also expressed heavy interest in Florida State. Some believe Smith will stay home and play for the LSU Tigers. He still has an official visit set for this weekend to Miami. He originally committed to Mark Richt when he was with the University of Georgia.

. Ruggs teased a video production on Tuesday. He may release a video before signing day, but most likely will wait until next Wednesday to reveal his college destination. Smith also plans to wait until next week to announce his intentions.

Four-star DB Todd Harris
Nick Lucero/Rivals.com
Is another DB still in the cards?
Yes, Alabama is likely to add one more defensive back to the talented group. C.J. Henderson, four-star cornerback from Columbus High School in Miami, Florida, appeared likely to jump on board in the Tide's class after his official visit two weeks ago. He now appears most likely to stay in-state by signing with Florida or Miami.

Todd Harris, four-star safety from Plaquemine High School in Louisiana, has been recruited by Alabama for a long time. He visited Tuscaloosa this past weekend. He is currently scheduled to visit TCU this weekend. Alabama, Arizona State, LSU and TCU are the top four. Alabama seems in best position to land another Louisiana-bred recruit.

Alabama is working to get Ameer Speed, three-star cornerback from Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville, Florida, on campus this weekend for an official visit. The 6-foot-3, 196-pound athlete has visited Georgia, Michigan State and Virginia Tech. He also lists Oregon and Tennessee in his top five. Alabama has been working the last few weeks to get him on campus this weekend. A decision remains in the air regarding the visit at this time.

What's happening with Jarez Parks?
Jarez Parks, four-star defensive end from Sebastian River High School in Florida, has been considered an Alabama lean for several months. His commitment was once thought to come down to Alabama and Florida. The Gators appear to have slowed down its recruitment of the in-state prospect, but may bring him in for an official visit this weekend.

Florida State appears the only threat to the Crimson Tide for the 6-foot-4, 255-pound edge rusher. Jimbo Fisher is expected to have an in-home visit with Parks on Friday. Nick Saban had an in-home visit last week. Parks has been very quiet regarding his recruitment from the very beginning. Most don't have any idea what he is thinking or what he will do. It's just a guess, and he may wait until after signing day to announce a decision.

Five-star RB Najee Harris

Will Alabama sign the No.1 class again?
Alabama is closing in on a historically impressive signing day. The Crimson Tide has seven five-star commitments (the most in the Rivals era). Six of those five-stars arrived at Alabama in January for early enrollment. Alabama also does not seem in position to lose any of the remaining highly ranked commitments in the class. However, there is the potential for at least one commitment going the junior college route.

A lot of eyes remain on the top targets who were all discussed. Alabama has a great chance to close very strong, and make the signing class even better. Alabama is the No.1 ranked class ahead of Ohio State, Georgia, Oklahoma and Michigan.

There are nine Rivals100 members in Alabama's class. The potential is there for the Crimson Tide to add tep-three more Rivals100 targets within the next week. Alabama appears destined for the top recruiting class in the country for the second consecutive year. It will also mark the seventh time in the last nine years Alabama has finished with the nation's top class.

Mac Jones with Jalen Hurts

Mac Jones, four-star quarterback from The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida, is playing in one final all-star game this week; the USA vs. Canada game in Orlando. The game can be seen on ESPN 3 on Saturday night or ESPNU on Sunday.

Jones took an official visit to Alabama prior to traveling to Orlando. This is the one and only official visit for the Tide commitment. He considered additional visits, but after the visit in Tuscaloosa decided he is solid with the decision and no reason to see what other schools have to offer.

"The visit was good," Jones said. "I flew in on Friday. We had dinner at Chuck's. I sat with Jalen (Hurts). Coach Saban was walking around the whole time. Coach Sark (Steve Sarkisian), his girlfriend and my family sat together. We hung out with everyone at dinner. I then went out with Miller (Forristall) that night. He was really cool. He was a good host.

"The next day we walked around campus. We talked football with Coach Sark. My parents went over to Coach Saban's house on Saturday night. I heard it was a lot of fun. We rode golf carts over there on Sunday. Coach Saban's house was really neat. Lake Tuscaloosa was really awesome. I can see myself boating on it.

The conversations with Coach Sarkisian and Coach Saban made Jones feel comfortable about coming in with a young quarterback group which features sophomore Jalen Hurts and freshman Tua Tagovailoa.

"The visit with Coach Sark was really good," he said. "We talked a little bit about football. He is just so laid back. We can talk about anything. He talks about life, what will happen in college and how he will be there to help. It was good to talk to him. We talked a little bit every day. It's good to build on to that relationship.

"I got to spend a lot of time with Coach Saban even though he was at my school two days before my visit. We talked about things outside of football. He asked how I was feeling about Alabama. I told him I am really exited. He is excited about me coming.

"I wanted to make sure I get a fair shot. He said they are going to give it to me. I am not saying I want to be guaranteed a chance to start. I just want a fair shot to compete for that chance every. I am trusting their word. It's going to be exciting with Jalen and Tua. We are all different type of quarterbacks. We all bring something different to the table."

The four-star spent time with SEC Offensive Player of the Year during the visit.

"Jalen and I ate together on Friday night," Jones said. "We hung out both nights. My dad and I talked to him. I told him I was looking forward to competing with him. He seems laid back. I told him I was going to come in and push him. He knows he is the starter.

"I had a similar situation when I was a freshman in high school. There was a quarterback a few years older than me who was the starter. He took me under his wing. Hopefully, it will be a similar situation."

Jones has developed a close relationship with several recruits throughout the year including Crimson Tide wide receiver targets Henry Ruggs and DeVonta Smith.

"It was awesome being around those guys," he said. "I have known them for a really long time. I honestly don't have to recruit them anymore. They are just seeing what type of person I am. I think we will at least get one of them. It will be awesome if we can get both."

FCS has its number at 63, if I'm not mistaken. Their incoming number is also 30 initials vs FBS getting the 25/85.

2. "Recruited" is a funny word when you consider we have a kid who's been committed for almost a year that will blue shirt as a "non recruited" player.
As I understand it, a blueshirt can be recruited. It's really not a lot different than a greyshirt with one exception; they can enroll and practice in the fall.

As a response to #1, I'm not sure of those exemptions still exist... I didn't research what the current rules are.

In regards to #2, Non-recruited = No OV, no arranged off campus meetings and no NLI issued. That's not an easy task for most players that are wanted pretty strongly by many teams... it's not as hard to accomplish for a 3* and under with limited options.

Also, they used to have provisions on the "counter" status that didn't count them toward the 85, but once they actually took a snap in a live game they became a counter... not sure if they still have that provision... if so you "may" defer a good player for a year or two, but unless they are just going to be practice squad players for 4 years, you're not going to defer for them 4 years.

Aubrey Solomon, DT

If not for Wilson, we all would be talking about Aubrey Solomon. The "other" available defensive tackle possesses just as much upside with his athleticism and pure strength to take on opposing blockers.

This has also been a highly contested recruiting process, with Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh going bowling and riding go-karts with Solomon, per Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press.

Despite Harbaugh's unconventional tactics, Solomon admitted Alabama still leads, per Ryan Bartow of 247Sports.

"I like the physicality they bring and their defense," he explained.

Anyone who has watched the Crimson Tide over the past decade knows how well they can develop defensive linemen, which is an obvious draw for any young recruit.

Meanwhile, Alabama is bringing in yet another elite class, but it is surprisingly light on high-end defensive linemen with the exception of junior college signee Isaiah Buggs. Solomon could be the perfect addition to keep the run of defensive tackles going.

Predicted Destination: Alabama

Link:

Aubrey Solomon. For the last four years, that name has striked fear into offensive linemans' heads. Not only does he have NFL size, he has the motor, the attitude and skills to be the next big defensive linemen in college.

"We (Lee County) played in the toughest schedule in Georgia. We played all top five teams in the state, and Aubrey only elevated his game against the better teams. His motor, size and skills are there. He's the best player in the contry in my opinion." Coach Pych said.

"Alabama, Georgia and Michigan have been in contact the most. USC is also up there also. Aubrey is originally from California so he gets a home feel there. Coach Saban stopped by today and that was HUGE for Aubrey and his mother. They really like what Alabama offers and feel it's a great fit for him."

With only a week until NSD, things are heating up. Alabama and Michigan look to be his top two schools, and Aubrey couldn't be more relaxed.

"Aubrey is a great kid. His whole family is just very solid. Aubrey is a leader in the school and in the community. He's very cool, calm and collective."

Where will Solomon end up? Let Coach Pych tell you his thoughts.

"Alabama. They've had a long time lead for him, his mother loves Tuscaloosa and Coach Saban. I think it will be Alabama, but Michigan is right up there."
