I don't know, but could be any number of reasons. If they tried him there and he had difficulties fielding them as many do, it would have been a short experiment. Also though, with his work on punt team, when they do special teams work at practice everyday, he'd have had to run with the 2's on one side which is a lot on any player's plate.
He does punt coverage. I think his skill set is better for the straight end speed as opposed to the quicks required for PR. Not a knock, just a differentiation between Javy/Waddle/Palmer change of direction and burst vs. the straight speed of Jameson.
I can't remember if Ridley returned punts. With his stop-on-a-dime routes, I think he'd have the knack for it.
Okay, I went and checked. He returned two for four yards. I'm surprised, but I guess Waddle took up the slack.
Speaking of punt returns... was looking at SEC return stats (player must have played in 75% of his team's games and have a minimum of 1.2 punt returns per game played). Jaylen Waddle averaged over 24 yards per return on 20 returns in 2019. Since 2009, the next highest is Chris Davis in 2013 when he averaged 18.7 yards on 17 returns.
