I know, I know, "In Saban We Trust". First, I will never run down a player, well I have one, Nick, no kick Bostick. But other than him I have never unleashed my fury on a player. Coaches are fair game to me. I absolutely want another defensive coordinator. I really feel like the defense sometimes plays with a WTF look on their face when he is sending in his signals like he has head lice. I realize this is a different game now, spread offense, no huddles, quick plays, so forth and so on, but the read option, or throws to the tight ends are like putting a piece of liquorish in my mouth and expecting me to not make a face that rivals that "Throw momma from the train " broad. I am almost done with the guy, with the talent he has there is no reason for this to be a constant issue that even a hobo football analyzer like myself can see. Hope he fixes this, cause its my "up in the morning, daily walk griping to myself, neighbor thinking I am crazy routine now.

Kiffin gonna look like he ate a bottle of Viagra when he watches the film on our RB and TE coverage or lack thereof.

I completely agree with you here. So many had his back the last few year and had some words with people like me for doubting him. One thing that he has said, that I haven't forgotten, was that "we simplified the defense so the players could better understand". He said that last season. It seriously has me wondering what in the hell he had installed before that in the last fifteen years was so complicated that our star ball players couldn't understand it. What has he constructed in such a way that he couldn't be understood like Kirby, Pruitt, and Tosh all were? He's a disaster in my book. I honestly think with time Coach Saban felt he could churn Golding into a solid defensive coordinator and build some tenure with him, but it doesn't appear to be working from my seats (which are very far away). We have the horses, but it honestly feels like he sacrifices their ability and tarnishes their names by not having them in the right calls or in the right mental preparedness to dominate. We have the best talent in the country, why are we still getting beat by no star, never heard from tight ends (seriously not a knock on those tight ends, props to them for killing us).

I kinda don't get the hate on PG. I mean most of us have made valid points, and I get where you were coming from, but Look at the stats for defense this year:
Defense allowed the following stats:
Miami 178 yards and 88 yards rushing (Okay, solid game)
Mercer 168 yards and 48 yards rushing (Saban got on team's ass for not taking the game serious.)
Florida 194 yards and 246 yards rushing (Sudden, the team learned their lesson )
S. Mississippi 131 yards and 82 yards rushing. (you could tell team was little more focused )

I personally believe that it doesn't matter if Pruitt, Kirby or anyone came back and coached this defense, it would be still a same situation. Saban spoke on that several time and said that he acknowledged that It's hard to stop people from scoring and that they have to make adjustment and they know teams will score..

I think the fans keep forgetting that. I feel like the coaching staff have already accepted that it is the new normal and they are adjusting to deal with it, but the fans aren't. Another thing is people needs to understand that this is Saban defense. Golding is coaching within the system and Saban is the one who signs off on game plan each week. The main issue we're having this year is players that that can't maintain intensity throughout the game. We have Hellams missing tackles left and right. That's on the players. Hellams know better not to do that. The depth behind 1st line? that's on COACHES. not just PG. Defense was simplified and It is helping a lot. i see players making calls. they're confident. they know the assignments. they're not just executing it well. We played team that plays uptempo offense this season. Ole miss is next. TAMU does that. Auburn does that. Miss State does that.

So in another word, PG isn't going anywhere. Saban isn't going to let him go and then having to find a DC that know his system. Pruitt isn't coming back for a while. If he is cleared, then I think he would be back as a advisor to PG. Could be LB coach. but right now.. we just have to deal with what we have for a while.

The days of "three yards and a cloud of dust" are fading away, and it's forced defensive-minded coaches like Saban to find ways of at least slowing down those high-powered passing games. "It's challenging as a defensive guy to be able to adapt and adjust to the way the game is played now, but I think the rules in college football have sort of ignited the change throughout the game. Blocking three and a half yards down field on a pass play which leads to RPOs is a dramatic change in the way you play football. You need to be spread out to do that. To be able to block down field on a pass behind the line of scrimmage, which is just a rule that applies in college football, changes the game in terms of how you throw screens and how you pick people and run people in the flat. Those are real challenging things to try and defend. They all create tremendous run, pass conflicts for defensive players."

A little early after last year's finish IMO.... That group improved tremendously, this one might as well.

To me, the biggest thing is just getting everyone lined up and on the same page every play. Pre Ole Miss last year that was an issue. I've noticed a significant change in the way Bama players end the play and get back to their defensive positions as quickly as possible.... That makes a difference.

Do I think PG is a world beater? Probably not... But he's done great things on the recruiting trail (as most Bama assistants have, shocker), and last year gives him some leash on my end. There are still some head scratching moments like the 3rd and 19 blitz against Florida, but there is potential to finish the year really strong, again.

Please pull Georgia's defensive stats. I'd say a similar schedule to an extent. It can be done.

I dont hate the guy, I dont understand the same play kicking us in the ass all the time. Good points otherwise. Its Sabans defense, but is Saban calling the defense or is Pete? I still think there are better Defensive coordinators out there. If Golding was a world beater we would have to find another like we did Smart. Just my honest opinion.

I am praying for that to happen, and they should get better. I just have this Pete Golding cringe sometimes. I will get over it. lol

Good point. But I noticed something. During the game Saturday, the camera was on Saban and I caught him calling a play. He was saying " Run the play Peter. " I couldn't catch everything. I think Saban said he doesn't get involved with DC/OC playcalling during the game, but If he see something, he'll offer his inputs.

Now, I agree on same plays killing us over and over. I keep forgetting they have pattern matching scheme defense. It often changes at the LOS. Even through the player know that There is a chance a certain QB or RB is going to have wide running lane, they still gotta run the play that was given by the coaches. We'll learna lot about PG this coming saturday. I hope he had lot of lesson learned from that game. Kiffin isn't stupid. HE knows we've had issues with TE coverage. He'll take advantage of that. He'll take advantage of middle of the field. He knows Jobe is going to get PI on deep ball. He knows we will struggle with Option plays.. Kiffin will get cute early and often in the game... but it doesn't work, then he knows he has to do something.

Agreed, well thought out posts. Loving the discussions.

Kiffin vs Golding is a mismatch. We will just have to hope our talent can override the clear coaching disadvantage.

But look at who they've played.
Clemson is bad.
UAB is not great
SC isn't good
Vandy is real real real bad.

Hard to tell at this point. We'll find out this saturday when they play arkansas.

Pretty similar to our schedule like I said. Florida is the outlier, but we know Clemson still has a decent defense. My point is that Georgia is playing nasty defense and the numbers show it can be done. We haven't really shown that, all we've done is reference Coach Saban's comment. I agree, Coach is usually right on a lot, but he is not perfect and not always right. The days of the old SEC are gone, but I don't buy that defenses can't stop offenses anymore. We have shown we could adapt, and we did under Pruitt. It just came across as an excuse to me when he gave Golding an out with what he said.

I'll say this tho - If there isn't some type of adjustment in terms of using depth at every level of the defense, and the D looks as exhausted as it has in past years of games like this, I'd be disappointed.

Talking about a solid 3 man rotation at OLB and ILB with Braswell & Moody. DL rotation with Smith & Ray getting legit snaps. On the back end using D. Wright (or other) to spell Hellams & Battle. Just give the studs a chance to play at a high level in the 4th quarter... Would be nice to see!

At some point here someone will stop for a minute and ask, "wait, these co-exist?" Do the numbers show how weak the east is or do they show what Georgia is?

Does it really matter either way as long as they dominate when they should? I'd rather my team dominate a shitty Vanderbilt team than come out and look like shit against a Mercer team.

And if the East is weak, what did Florida do to us?
