Clemson playing a 3-1-7 on defense. Adaptation.

Auburn, Alabama, and Clemson went with a version of a three man front against LSU. The difference between what Clemson did vs Bama is the Tide used a 3-2 starting with Jennings and Lewis handling the linebacking duties. UA did adjust and move those two back to their "normal positions" as the game progressed.

After two full years on the job how many years do you think it might take....reminder that two freshmen were able to learn and one didn't arrive until summer of last year.

Clemson's 3-1-7 actually included 2 LBs - MLB Skalski, and OLB Isaiah Simmons. Simmons is just so versatile they counted him as a DB.

Perhaps Alabama recruited some guys that can be as versatile as Simmons in Drew Sanders or Quandarrius Robinson or Khristian Story

Is it scheme, players, or a combo of both that allowed LSU to disrupt Clemson?

I don't know much about scheme or their players, but they were so much more aggressive than our D was at any point this season. They tried to dictate the game... Not respond. When's the last time ours looked that way? JMO

LSU had better D personnel than Clemson. But if you are talking about Clemson disrupting LSU for portions of the game, I thought Venables had a great scheme, but LSU executed better and had better WRs/TE than Clemson had across their 6 DBs.

In terms of LSU disrupting Clemson, they have great talent and play much more aggressive than Alabama. Their DBs press, grab, hold, hit and do everything to disrupt WRs. They clamp down on underneath routes and blitz more frequently form a more amorphous defensive approach. Golding should take noted from what Venables and Aranda do with their defenses to disrupt offenses. I don't think the 2 gap style of DL and a conservative approach in coverage even fits with the style of offense Alabama has played the last couple of years.

Makes sense...

The thing about their DB play is that despite their penalties, they're still effective. Because ultimately the refs just flat get tired of calling PI's. They were noticeably physical with us at BDS and got a ton of breaks because they were just consistently physical.

Their LB Queen was a beast last night. Disruptive. So many times they put Clemson behind the chains and were able to get off the field because of it. I sure hope Moses, Harris, McMillon, or whoever make those plays next year. Something has to change on that side of the ball...

LSU's defense was helped big time with Lawrence's accuracy issues. His accuracy was not good at all last night. Could he have had happy feet which means LSU forced it or is that just who he is? Likely both but I do not think he is the QB everyone wants to make him out to be. Good but not great.

The freshmen who started at LB didn't know whole playbook...but they knew just enough to get by. Kaho had some issues last year... so he's playing catch up. This spring would be the critical time for Kaho… Show what he can do.
