🏈 🔎 PRE-GAME discussion~ Wisconsin: Horton, Dewberry, and Brown interviews from Tuesday

FWIW, he left a few weeks ago.
"Early spring camp," as DeBoer put it, threw me for a bit of a spin when it dawned on me how many different receivers we talked about during the last few months. I don't think he's been mentioned one time here. I don't remember anyone saying anything about him in any of the three periods of the off-season.

More notably, in all of the reports from the media viewing periods not a single one (beat writer) noticed he wasn't there.

That is the funniest thing about it. The Rodak's of the group that count the players at every opportunity, looking for absences so they can hopefully break some news... and they can't even do that right.

I saw that. I'm not sure if it's MTSU defense or him being that good
There's an article from the Wisconsin site for SB Nation that talks about their running game last weekend. (I remember it's called Bucky's because I wondered when they'd get a Buc-cee's.)

Fickell mentioned they shuffled four on their offensive line from week one to week two. A tackle switched sides, a guard moved to that tackle spot, and a new starter were three of the moves. They weren't getting a lot of push according to what was reported.

Fickell also made a comment about some changes in practice this week: "we're going to play music" in prep for BDS. He mentioned how their trip to Iowa threw them a curve ball last year when they didn't expect it to be so loud.

They got to that third field, the one farthest to the west, and froze watching the QB's. Hell, did any bother to look at the fourth field just to see what the kickers were doing? I don't recall any.

IF they put the QB's and WR's on the field in front of the weight room the beat writers and photogs would never make it to the second field.

Now you've lost me. He's asking for more intense practices and instruction and you're postering he's still that fragile?

You know he didn't get the starting role last year for a number of reasons. One of which is how he got upset with himself after a bad play: it's something we've known since he arrived. It's also something we've been discussing pointing to his progress.

Teaching someone to "forget the last play" isn't easy and it certainly isn't done with adding intensity in coaching.
I am talking about the coaches especially with a 4th year player. Coach them hard, if Simpson can't handle it then is he really the right guy? BTW I think he is so that is not what I am trying to point out. Coaches need to coach hard to harden the players.

There is no one size fits all. You can't simply "coach hard" to "harden players" because all these guys are built differently. Hell, I'm sure they coach all the QB's in the room differently. A good coach isn't going to come down hard on every DB for a mistake when he's also asking the DB to forget the last play he was just beaten on. It's cutting off the nose to spite the face. Hell, if they would have come down hard on JM last season there are times it probably would have broken him.

Now, Coker was a 4th year player sitting on the bench. We've seen A LOT players shine in their last year whether it be the fourth or fifth. It's a cookie cutter approach to say "4th year guy" when no one develops at the same rate.

I've been looking around off and on and I still haven't seen anything about their center. He didn't play last weekend; back-up had the start. He had his issues with snaps: some high, some low. I don't believe theirs was a QB fumble (though they've had one this season. *0.00 TO ratio.)

So, we've got QB1B, starting TE out, shuffled offensive line, starting center questionable ...

Jake Renfo... I don't think he plays this week. I don't think he has been practicing at all this week.
Their board don't seem optimistic that he will play.

From my experience as a coach, couldn’t agree more. Some kids crawl in a shell, some will run through a wall, while some will fold up like a cheap suit. You have to read the kid to see what he can or can’t handle in practices from a coaching standpoint.
I once coached a kid when he was in the 8th grade, he was my point guard. I saw the trap coming and I told him “you’re gonna have to beat it passing the ball, don’t try and dribble through it!” Damn! If he didn’t turn it over 3 straight trips because he tried to dribble through it. I blew a gasket and he started crying. Hell, I had to take him out for the remainder of the game! From then on, I coached him differently as did I start to read others. The cookie cutter approach doesn’t work. His senior year in football, he was our QB and our kick return guy. Best athlete, small school, so that’s why. Opening kick is shanked and bounces down the sideline. He has to decide, let it go and hope it goes out of bounds or cover it and we start inside our 10. Damn ball died at the two and as soon as he touched it, he was swamped. Our HC is raising hell! I tell him to stay away from him and let me handle it. I got the play from the OC, looked our QB in the eye and told him that I believed in him and that I had his back. Gave him the play and we proceeded to drive 98 yards for the opening score of the game!! Lost the game, but our QB played his ass off that night.

What do you think Grub is admitting? He didn't prepare him for FSU. He did not coach him hard enough. I get one size does not fit all to a point but if you turn the keys over to a guy he dang well better be able to handle the heat.

Keep coddling these guys and you are going to get the results we have seen when the heat turns up. It takes a mentally tough person and team to respond especially on the road.

Ty had one of the better games of anyone that weekend. All Grubb "admitted" was what Ty had said. Ty asking to be driven harder is good news: it verifies what we've been saying about the spring, summer, and fall camp. He's matured a lot between the ears since last season.

Coddling. A word I haven't seen mentioned. A vast difference between that and a kid asking to be coached harder.

The FSU game was a mess but it wasn't on Simpson. The line of scrimmage was horrendous and the receivers dropped a lot of balls.

All said and done like the rest of us we are trying to find the "why" for playing .500 for almost a full year of games. Something has to explain it and I do not see anything that makes me thing they have been hardened when the pressure is turned up so yeah I go to the coddling conclusion. Tik Tok videos and hearing reports that the coaches seem to conditionally change how they are coaching, throw on top of that CKDs press conferences and it does not seem like they are being coached hard. I have not been to the first practice so maybe they are but it has been a challenge to take it to the field especially on the road under a CKD coached team at Bama.
