Ty Simpson struggled mightily when
Alabama football lost its Week 1 game at Florida State. He made poor decisions, and took far too long to do so.
The redshirt junior understood after that game that his performance wasn’t good enough, even going so far as to apologize to the Crimson Tide’s leadership group. Then, Saturday against ULM, he looked much better, going 17-for-17 passing, throwing for three touchdowns and running for another, all in the first half of the 73-0 blowout.
On Monday, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was asked where he saw the most improvement from Simpson, game-to-game.
“Decision making,” Grubb said. “I thought he was extremely decisive. He was very dialed on his reads. He didn’t pass up open players. I thought he played great. I thought he was really, really into the game plan all week and I was really hopeful that he was gonna play very, very well.”
The Alabama staff decided before the game to let Austin Mack take a first-half series. Kalen DeBoer noted Monday that he feels competition brings out the best in every player, including Simpson.
The coaches were impressed with how the Tennessee native dealt with the move.
“Just attacked it, kind of dug in, focused more on himself,” Grubb said of Simpson. “The toughest part about playing quarterback is not letting outside influences, whether it’s another quarterback, someone from outside the program, affect the way you prepare. I thought Ty was elite at that this week. He just dove into the preparation and did a great job.”
After the ULM blowout, Alabama is back to Power 4 competition this week. The Crimson Tide faces Wisconsin Saturday, at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Simpson told reporters after beating up on the Warhawks that he had asked coaches to be harder on him moving forward. Grubb said that was the plan on Monday.
“That’s not surprising,” Grubb said. “That’s something that Ty certainly shared with me as well. That was something I told him after the first game was, I told you everybody on the team’s got to look inward, what we can own. I thought maybe I wasn’t hard enough on Ty. I didn’t harden him enough for the moment in the first week and I told him I wouldn’t make that mistake again.”
Alabama and Wisconsin are scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. CT Saturday in Tuscaloosa. The game will be aired on ABC.
