🏈 🔎 - Looking ahead to South Carolina...

This is the game I was concerned about back in July and August. I'll briefly explain why... Bama would be coming off 4 straight tough games... little did I know how tough since I personally didn't think Vandy, Mizzou, and Tennessee would be as good as they are. But, I figured the Tennessee game would take a physical and emotional toll, as that rivalry has again become volatile. Then traveling to play what I thought would be a better South Carolina team felt very, very trappy. Their Shula saddled offensive staff aside, they still have one of the more dynamic and higher potential QB's in CFB and some solid defensive pieces, especially in the backfield. EDGE Dylan Stewart is a problem, but he might not be 100% (hip injury). Bryan Thomas Jr on the other side is also an impact guy. 2 months ago, all that added up to a bit of a concern, for me at least.

But, a good bit has changed... most significantly being that LaNorris Sellers has been held back by Shula's offense, something I factored in yet still underestimated. And while Bama is a beat up and tired team right now, this last game before the looming 2nd bye week is falling into place nicely as far as Bama is concerned. Obviously, the Tide has to show up. If they treat this game like FSU, they'll get FSU type results. But if Bama treats it like the previous 4 SEC contests, they will be fine.

One area Bama has struggled in is stopping the run of defense, specifically, they've given up too many explosive plays on the ground. Maybe this game is what the good doctor ordered... South Carolina ranks last in the league in total offense and rushing offense (just under 3 YPC). They also rank at or near the bottom of the SEC in scoring offense, passing offense, explosive plays, 3rd down conversions, sacks allowed, TFL allowed, and red zone conversions. So in short, this shapes up much better on paper now than it did in my mind weeks ago. This is a great opportunity for Bama to go in there and enforce their will defensively. This UA team still hasn't created an identity yet, IMO. They've shown flashes of one on both sides of the ball, but they haven't claimed one, yet. Now is the time to do such.

South Carolina's defense has been much more capable, and more in line with what I think most expected South Carolina to be this season. But I don't see them holding up well for 60 minutes against Ty Simpson and this offense if Bama's defense keeps Sellers off the field for most of the game. Bottom line, Bama has a good chance at their 5th SEC win in a row, and can do so by stepping on South Carolina's throat if they come out ready to play. That bye week is dangling like a sweet treat in the distance, but I want watch this team to feast on some poultry first.

I wonder if they have a JUMBO that they utilize. :ROFLMAO:

Something I think that bodes well for us is a 2:30 CST kick off. Williams-Brice is a bit underrated compared to other schools around the SEC, but it is certainly no slouch in the department of being a little raucous. I would not have been upset had this been an 11 am CST kick.

Agree... glad it isn't a night game.

I think I agree with you for the most parts. I think the theme for this week for those guys: Start strong and finish strong for both sides of the ball. What I'm hoping to see this upcoming weekend to put the game out of the reach by half time so we can get young players some reps, and rest starters little earlier.

You mentioned Sellers: Have you seen his stats for this year? Woof! 25 sacks! He only has 5 TDs to 2 Ints for the year. I haven't never seen a starter's stats like that other than High school.

So My goals for Bama team to do what I want them to do to make myself feel better:

Offense- Start fast. Finish the drives. We need to see three explosive plays. Running game to go over 200 yards of rushing. I want Simpson to have 3 or more TDs.

Defense- I want to see 3 interceptions/sacks or more. I want them to live in the backfield.

Get the starters out of the game by 3rd quarter.

I said last night in the GBU thread that...

The game in Columbia will show how strong this team in mentally...

To me, that's really the bottom line. And maybe that will ultimately be the identity of this team... not so much traditionally a team that will just grind down opponents and MTAQ every week like some Saban teams did. Or a physical, dominating defense that breaks the opponent's will every week, like a couple of other Saban teams did. Maybe it'll be that the mental toughness is back to elite levels though, and this is a team that'll bow to nobody and has championship level resialancy... that's something that has also been missing the last several years.

I haven’t really watched Carolina this year. Is Sellers using his legs at all? That’s really the only thing that makes me nervous. Their defense has been shredded this year so I am not worried about our scoring.

This is certainly a growth opportunity. Everyone is telling them how good they are, they are coming off a tough stretch with the last one being a rival. This game is a road game where there is some history of struggles and they will be big favorites. Hopefully they have put some of the struggles and mental lapses behind them.

So My goals for Bama team to do what I want them to do to make myself feel better:
My goal is that they simply take South Carolina seriously and they continue working hard and improving on their obvious defensive and running game deficiencies.

And I think they will. They have developed tough mentality

This could be a trap game but I don’t think so. The way the team is focused and coming together each week and their ability to perform and succeed after getting punched in the face is encouraging.

Their Shula saddled offensive staff aside,
In the wins thread for UofSC the first thing mentioned is Shula. There's good and bad there.

If you remember we were talking about their trio of coordinators around the same time Auburn announced they were going with three play callers. At the time, and I'm still firmly planted here, my question was "how does 'got milk' coach a QB with Sellers ability. After all, Shula is a pocket guy: not a "let 'em loose."

I feel a little bad for their fan base because like them I had higher expectations for what Sellers could bring EVEN IF he was under MSD. I've watched bits and pieces through the season and I still see the same thing today as I saw when this fall kicked off. As soon as Sellers feels pressure, watch his head. More often than not, unless he's already locked into a guy, as soon as the pressure hits his eyes and head drop.

I haven't watched him enough to say "he's horrible at keeping his eyes downfield." I've watched him enough I've gotten that impression.

My biggest concern to start the week? Over pursuit with the back half of Bama's defense.

Another week where we need the attitude that we have to continue to improve. Still plenty of things to iron out in the running game defensively. I really liked what I saw out of Hill last week - would love to see him build off of that. Dude is a guy that would NOT want to tackle head up.

Continue to take care of business this week, so we can gear up for this final stretch.

This sound familiar. 😂

@Brandon Van de Graaff, this is the game I've been a little worried about as well. Bama always has trouble with mobile quarterbacks. I think Bama could have lost this game last year if it were in Columbia. You said Shula was holding Sellers back. Is he holding the OL back? I've seen so many highlights where the OL is getting shredded and Sellers is panicking.
