I do worry though that too few others are contributing to our offense production. It feels like against elite defenses we don’t have the OL and additional skill players to spread the load around.

Yes. The more he wins, and it’s happening again so far this season, the more the UCF downward slide looks like an anomaly. Or a bad fit in some way. The spending spree that the Vols have supported him with has obviously helped, but IMO his success isn’t solely tied to that. He’s made a stronger commitment to defense for one. But his offensive style, the way he attacks, is still too much for most teams to handle. He’s got to have the right QB that can run the system in order to make it hum, but he has that again in Iamaleava. Winning at the LOS and keeping them behind the chains in the early downs is key. A strong defensive front that can really limit their ability to run effectively while also making the QB uncomfortable is key, IMO. I don't think Nico threw a pick against OU, but I think he had 2 fumbles (I know he had 1 for sure).

The OL is really good. Lots of skill players. I just dont see them getting much.

If he's able to sustain some success the next 2 years or so, the next hurdle will be maintaining it, which ain't easy. Dealing with staff turnover, dealing with complacency, dealing with the higher expectations he would have created, etc. But, the explosion of NIL/Collectives along with playoff expansion came at a really good time for them.

They were... as was most everyone else... but doing away with the the old rules and boundaries really opened things up for them. That ain't a knock on them, as much as I hate them, I get it.

Maybe, but we’ve had the poorest OL that we ever had under Saban the last few seasons, particularly at run blocking. So “best in years” isn’t great. That’s my point. Not able to run our RBs and take pressure off Milroe from having to either run or pass every down isn’t sustainable, mentally and physically for a QB. Besides one run by Haynes, the only good gain our RBs had all game was as a receiver for Miller’s TD reception. And if you take away Williams, what left do we have on offense? I mean, maybe this is our lot for DeBoer’s first season with the players available to him after Saban’s exit. But I’m just saying it’s concerning that we couldn’t consistently make those 3-5 yard runs that would have prevented us from losing the 4 TD lead when our passing stopped clicking. It will be potentially a LONG season this year, and I want Milroe healthy for all of it.

Gee...we were playing against uga.....those guys manned up... these group hasnt even given up a td in xx amount of games....

I thought our oline played great. Lots of groups played great. ....

No we shouldn't have had to come back....with that lead. Should have come in second half...and kicked ass...but took foot off accelerator .....

Literally, fifteen guys making plays on offense and the question is "spreading the load around?" I don't get the thought nor the question.

This is where it matters knowing the difference between mean, median, and mode.

A closer look reveals that the sum yardage of all receivers not named Williams equaled to only 20 yards more than Williams. So about 50% of our passing yardage went to one receiver. As I said, that’s not spreading the load around.

For our rushing totals, our QB carried the ball the same number of times as all others combined. In terms of yardage, our QB was responsible for 68% of all rushing yardage, at 7.3 ypc vs only 3.5 for all others.

So call it Cliff Notes, but that’s two players generating a disproportionate amount of offensive production.

I only highlight these stats because our offense completely fell flat for over half the game, exhausting our D and losing our lead in the process.

I don't mean this sarcastically, well, maybe a bit. But, so what? It's the distribution that allows one guy to do what he did. There were plays where they decided to double RW and it led to those other guys. Then they backed off on the double's and tried to go safety over the top.

Uh … we shouldn’t want our best passer to also carry the ball more and get hit/tackled more than all other RBs combined. Moreover we ought to also prefer experienced and bulkier receivers to be tackled more than skinny 17 yr olds. I don’t think I’ve witnessed a season where the leading passer and rusher were the same guy and remained healthy all season long. I can definitely say I haven’t seen a 17 year old starting receiver stay healthy for a whole season that included a grueling 12-team playoff. So naturally I’m wary of this trend.

@musso I understand your point, BUT you have to look at it this way. RW made the most of his opportunities and Milroe just flat out abused the Dawgs in the first half on the ground.
Just from my eyes, it looked like Jam tried to bounce things wide too many times and pursuit limited him.

I too like Simpson. But IMO, our title hopes this season require a Heisman type QB, not merely a capable backup. We need Milroe’s unique dynamism to compensate for a lack of depth at WR and potentially a leaky secondary.

I just want us, whenever our RBs can’t find running lanes, to lean on short passes to the RBs and TEs rather than asking Milroe to run too often for short gains or to throw up too many 50/50 balls to RW. I want more judicious use of Milroe’s legs and Williams’ heroics. Hopefully by now, we can use Williams as much as a decoy as a real threat. I just don’t think his frame is quite ready for 16 or however many games of being our go-to target.
