| LIFE CV-19: Effects on life, work, and sports

Had some direct experience with this ordeal this week... No doubt one of the oddest couple of days of my life.

Very unfortunate for all of the kids, but especially the Seniors. Unless you've been through that grind or in that foxhole, it's hard to really understand how disappointing this is.

Ultimately no one knows what would have happened... But it's not hard to comprehend erring on the side of caution. This is just unprecedented. Crazy times!

So, you grasped "it could be the end of the world" from "it may not be a great thing to be in large groups of people in confined spaces?" Good lord. The fact that people are citing no confirmed cases in Alabama yet as some win, you do realize they have tested less than 20 people in this state right? And the CONSERVATIVE estimates from scientists is that 400,000 people will die from this in America. If and when someone you love comes down with this I don't believe you will be saying its no big deal... And the NCAA, MLB, etc. etc. etc. aren't suspending things because of the media. All of these entities are communicating with health professionals. That should tell you something.

This is the exact opposite of what the experts (doctors, scientists, etc.) are saying. And the really frustrating part about this is the majority of the people I see calling this overblown or saying its not a big deal are exactly the type of people (older people or sick people) that should be concerned.
 
@BamaBoyJosh How do you differentiate between doctors and scientists that are on the front line and and really know what is going on from other "experts"? I ask not to be combative but curious. I think it is wise to be selective and which is why I selectively reference WHO and CDC information. Do not watch much of the traditional news agencies.

As a numerous side note (at least to me), I didn't realize how many expert epidemiologists that I am friends with on social media lol.
 
All people included the President make judgement calls and sometimes they are right and sometimes wrong. The stakes are much higher obviously if you are the President.

Is it possible that a person that has been attacked for 3 years (some of it is certainly his own doing) has some built in skepticism of what they are being told and delays understanding the significance of the problem?

No, I got that message from multiple postings you displayed on here. Swine flu was the same deal, regular influenza is the same deal. We didn't close down for those sicknesses that were gripping the country. We don't shut down over blizzards, hurricanes, or tornados like we have for this. Simply using catastrophes that take life so you don't compare sickness to natural disasters. Technically a natural disaster has way more long and far reaching results. Just using estimates? That's what has gotten us here in the first place. Let's go on facts and what we currently know. And with all this hoopla, even with 40 people being tested as you stated, someone that has it would have gone to the authorities somewhere, someway, and somehow. They aren't just sitting in their homes sick, and doctors aren't just not reporting their findings. If someone in my family died from it, I wouldn't think any different than if they died from the flu, pneumonia, cancer, or a car crash. It was their time and how they went. Chances are none of it was preventable. The common flu is preventable, but even those that get shots still catch it. Who else would I blame for this? To me it sounds like you want to blame a person for a virus spreading.

Not the same deal, either one of those. That is the point. They didn't spread like this and didn't have the death rates. Let me once again reiterate, the CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATES ARE THAT 400,000 PEOPLE WILL DIE FROM THIS. Every single thing you are attempting to compare it to pales in comparison. I didn't say 40 people were tested, LESS THAN 20 have been tested. LESS THAN 20. The reason so few people have been tested is that we have so few tests in this state. You have to fit a certain criteria and for a certain time for them to even agree to test you. You can go two entire weeks without even showing symptoms. I don't want to blame anyone for a virus - unless the shit was created in a lab somewhere - I want to and WILL blame those that are at fault for doing little or nothing until it was too late and then even worse to care more about the optics of how many people are infected then controlling it. Though, I probably am a little too wrapped in it because I have a 70-year old dad with bad health - already with breathing issues - and if he gets this its damn near a death sentence. So, when I see you and others trying to pretend like its no big deal it makes me want to pull my hair out.

The WHO is who labeled it officially a pandemic and JUST put out a report that it could end up having a 5% death rate. In comparison, the flu has a .1% death rate.

Otherwise Michael Osterholm and his team at the Center for Infectious Disease Research have been very public about it. He practically prophesied this pandemic in a book he wrote in 2017, even pinpointing it to China and laid out how ill prepared we as a country were. And hes not just some kook, he's one of the most well respected people in his field. I watched this video originally thinking it was going to make me feel better about the whole situation and it just made me feel worse.

The flu has infected more people and killed more people. People are dying due to pneumonia, not the coronavirus itself. Hence why older people are the ones dying for the most part. there are outliers, but even the most physically fit and healthy people have heart attacks. So educate myself with what? The fact it's very similar to the flu, but just a different virus? Does it take a pandemic for you and others to practice being sanitary? I'm simply at a loss as to why you feel the world should just stop when there are every day illnesses doing exactly what corona is doing.

I understand your concern, but your dad could easily catch another illness if he's already having issues as you are saying, so pulling your hair out based on our opinion on this is misplaced. I'm sorry you are having to deal with that with your dad, and I'm sure it's tough. I have an 85 year old grandmomma not in the greatest of health myself, but my advice to her was the same as it was during the flu season. Just don't go places just to go places, wash your hands, stay clean, and just be wise. She loves the casino. How many buttons, slot handles, and cards are touching different fingers at that place? So would it be the smartest place for her to go? Doubtful, but they aren't shutting the place down for those that want to gamble.

3.4% is what they know about. There are thousands if not millions infected that aren't being reported. You honestly think the numbers in China are accurate? Think about the poor or those in the rural areas of China that aren't being reported. Even the WHO said 3.4% was inflated, and 1% was more accurate.

No. I would be willing to beat China grossly under reported deaths.
 
Getting back to the dance I think the most disappointing thing about canceling was it was going to be so wide open.
Teams like Penn St. that rarely make it had a really good team and Dayton certainly was built to win six games.
I think it would have been one of the most fun years to watch.
