Just got in from the game, left at the start of the 7th... Bama's bats were white hot early, went up 16-1 in the 2nd inning. 2 HR's by Lebron, 1 each by Mizell, Hodo, Neal, and Fowler (GSHR). The 13 runs in the 2nd was like watching MLB batting practice. On the mound, Blackwood looked solid early but ran into trouble on his 2nd time through the lineup. After Jax started clawing back against a couple of less experienced arms out of Bama's pen, UA went with a more veteran arm in Fay who stopped the bleeding. After I left, another vet, Myers relieved him. Currently, Bama leads 18-11, Bottom 8th.

Odd stat, there have been 10 HBP's in the game thus far.

A side note for you Braves fans, Jeff Blauser's kid plays for JSU.

Still chilly out. Once the weather warms the arms will be looser and throwing harder. Happens at all levels early in the cooler months.

This is correct, and I'll add to it as well...

As previously mentioned, the staff/pen is deep in arms compared to most years. They have their group of guys that they know they need on the weekends, and for the most part, those guys have been just fine (though the sample size it so small still, it's not worth reading into any of it too much). But, Bama has had 21 different guys pitch in a game already. I just did a quick glance and may have overlooked something, but it appears only 1 other SEC team has had 20 appearances (UGA, which is also a deep pitching team). The average of the other teams in the league is about 15 (a couple of teams have only used 12 pitchers thus far). But I say that to say this... while roles are pretty well defined for several guys, there's a few that are battling for a seat at the table. We saw it a couple years ago when Alton Davis sorta came out of nowhere as a freshman early in the year, quickly found himself in a bigger role, and ended the season as the closer. These early season games against teams like Bradley, ND State, and Jax State are good audition opportunities, especially when starters are still working to extend their innings and the pen is being used early and often.

So, while I'll caution not to get too excited about the staff as a whole, overall they are sitting in a nice spot right now. And if they can consistently get quality starts on Fri and Sat out of Adams and Quick in SEC play, they will be tough to deal with considering the options they have in the pen.

Sorta crazy watching roster rotations in basketball and baseball.
