Nick Saban is expected to soon add another former Alabama player to the Crimson Tide staff.

Former Alabama safety Vinnie Sunseri is expected to join the Tide staff as a graduate assistant, sources told AL.com.

A fifth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2014, Sunseri last played in the NFL in 2016 when he was a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

After starting seven games as a sophomore at Alabama in 2012, Sunseri was emerging as one of the nation’s top safeties in 2013 and had two pick-sixes during the team’s first seven games of that season but suffered a season-ending knee injury and then left for the NFL.

Sunseri played for nine games with the Saints in 2014 and six with the 49ers in 2016.

Thank goodness we cleaned up at the early signing period. This much movement probably keeps us from finishing strong but coaching is everything. If we don't get the right coaches in place, recruiting won't mean much.
It's not ideal, but I don't see this have a huge effect on how the class ends. Heck, it's still a bit of a fluid situation with the number still looking to be at five or six more to be added.

The timing didn't work out on Tosh to the NFL in regard to February's signing date. In a perfect world for announcements they would've wanted it as quiet as possible. The issue came up about a week ago when you started hearing suggestion of his move to the NFL. A Tennessee recruiting guy caught the story, it's news to UT folks, and now it's national. (As a side note, I caught a glimps of a Rocky Top Talk article suggesting UT was now leading for To'oto'o a prospect some have said was Tosh's target. CJPan has been on him BTW.)

The choice of To'oto'o is one to watch. It's an interesting one because I feel he has a great opportunity contribute as a true frosh. All signs say he's got the head for the position, ya know? OR...he could have a great opportunity at UT as well. The kid is a player.

Other than To'oto'o, were you thinking about losing another guy they're targeting?

The overall numbers have always amazed me with recruiting. 24 signed, 4 more verbally committed and To'ot'o isn't even one of them. I get these other guys are longshots but if Tosh was the guy I doubt we close the deal. We still have Williamson, Byron Young and Kris Bogle hanging out and their all defensive prodigies. Miami might be looking better these days and it's hard to believe Young has ever had his stuff together when it comes to a destination.

I'm not sure who you're referring to here with "longshots." Another thread, perhaps.

I do know Tosh wasn't the only guy that's been involved with guys like Bogle.

As I've felt all along there's still another change coming on the defensive side of the ball. I was thinking two, maybe three. One's over with.

I believe it was you that asked about Washington's DC in another thread? There's a lot of mixed reports on that one. Feelings in Washington changed yesterday from what I understand. They were worried.

1-2 more leaving from the defensive side? Heck there are only 3 left, right? Golding, Scott and Kool.

It appears the NIU job isn't going to fall to Coach Kool.

NIU’s search is down to Ravens running backs coach Thomas Hammock and SMU defensive coordinator Kevin Kane tweets Adam Rittenberg. We have heard similar, adding that they interviewed a number of other candidates with impressive head coaching or interim head coaching experience, and some of the highest paid CFB offensive coordinators for the job.

It's me. I want that dude... Whoever he is. Big fan of the UW program and the way their guys are coached up!

@Tidestalker, Okay. You're talking about Jimmy Lake. I was surfing around a bit last night on a few Washington sites and caught their "guys" throwing water on the possibility he'd come to Bama. Like I mentioned earlier, there was also concern among those guys yesterday he was headed to Tuscaloosa. He's a hell of a coach in my view—known to be a heck of a recruiter as well.

(Side note to him: There's been four teams that have ranked in the top 15 in scoring defense over the last three seasons. Clemson is one as is Auburn. Alabama makes three...and the fourth? Washington.)

I caught the ESPN "release" last night when they were saying Golding was probably going to the the guy at DC. But, they were also using catch phrase like "main" or "primary" and things like "likely." That fits with what I've heard with all the caveats.

On that side of the ball my attention is on the line and the coordinator. What's interesting to me is I've heard Freddie Roach's name a few times. He's coaching the line at MSU, but there's talk of him working with the OLB's.

I believe until the Washington DC gives Nick a verdict the Process is in a holding pattern and add in our current DL coach situation everything is on hold. I suppose it is possible that Nick is given Coach K a chance to find a better gig before he moves forward. The fact Coach K is still out recruiting is odd if there is any truth to him leaving then again "they said" Tosh was recruiting one day ago and then presto he is gone to the Dawg Pound.

Some folks mention that Bo Davis might get a invite back into the band so lets take a look at his situation is with the NCAA as of a year or so back.

NCAA upholds penalty against former Alabama assistant Bo Davis

The NCAA denied an appeal from Bo Davis on Thursday and upheld a two-year show-cause penalty it placed upon the former Alabama assistant in April that runs through April 13, 2019.
According to an NCAA release, Davis argued that the show-cause order should expire two years from the date he resigned at Alabama, which was April 29, 2016, rather than two years from when the NCAA ruled on his case, which was this past April.
However, the penalty was upheld. That means Davis, who is now UTSA's defensive line coach, can't do any off-campus recruiting through April 13, 2019.

So if Nick did invite Bo back as his DL then Bo couldn't recruit off campus until May. If true then this is not much of a problem.

Right on. Thanks for the update.

I don't think there is any question after last year that it would be nice to have an experienced DC. I know Golding called the D a couple years at UTSA but I'm much more comfortable with Lake who's called the D in huge situations. And as I've mentioned before, the player development at Washington has been extremely high level... Including quite a few coming out this year.

I don't want to overreact to the Clemson beat down but it's hard to imagine Golding being "the guy" after that. Would love to see a new alpha dog with some new energy and ideas to add... Along with that experience. I'm officially on Lake Watch!
