šŸˆ Alabama officially releases new coaching staff

Lake has got to know what's coming if he takes the Bama job. By this time next year, he will have multiple power 5 HC offers to consider. Somehow administrators believe that superior talent means superior coaching. What did PT Barnum say again?

@Tidestalker A bit more on Lake...

I mentioned yesterday that I'd surfed around a few Washington sites just to see what their beat writers were saying about the possible move to Bama. I didn't spend a lot of time looking around last night, but did catch one thing I thought was amusing.

Kim Grinolds was one of the founders and runs the Washington site http://Dawgman.com

He's said he's heard from four different sources that Lake was in town interviewing. We know that's true. I've seen it suggested he has met with Saban more than once. I was amused when he also went on to say that out of these four sources one said "he'd taken the Bama job," while another has confirmed "he was offered." A third source told him "Lake had turned down the job." And, evidently the fourth guys said "I don't know if he said no to Bama or not."

How's that for a fan site keeping their members up to date with the latest news?

Yes.
No.
Maybe.
And an I don't know.

Now, as a Bama fan, how much more do you know now versus when you started reading this post?

FWIW, I had it suggested that we need to pay attention to what happens with Lake today. It wasn't from someone I know well, but one who seems to have a least a grasp on what's been going on in the Moore complex.

Thanks for the info, TP!

Quick question for you - Would you like to see Lake on board? Or prefer Golding...? I love the idea of Lake calling the D with Golding in a subordinate role. JMO

Washington Huskies

Bio on Lake from UM....

In 2017, the Huskies led the Pac-12 in both total defense (eighth nationally) and scoring defense (fifth nationally) and were the national leader in fewest yards allowed per completion (9.42), thanks largely to the defensive backs unit coached by Lake. Sophomore Taylor Rapp earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors, the fifth from Lake’s unit honored with first team honors over the last three seasons.

Boner alert...

Glad that Saban's the DB coach but would be sweet to have a DC that can coach them up as well.

Makes you wonder about who will actually coach the DB's if Lake were to agree to take the Bama gig. It's possible the staff changes at Bama will NOT be complete until after NSD.

Eh, but what do we do with Golding? I was underwhelmed with the on-field results of his LB coaching this past season...

SLO mentioning "underwhelmed" leads me to an analogy: Major and Pendry.

When Major was hired back in '07 Saban saw him as one of the guys that has a lot of potential coaching. In Applewhite, he saw a good offensive football mind in the making. But, that needed some refinement and that's the main reason we saw Pendry working so closely with MA. In a nutshell, it was all about how to game plan against future opponents.

Golding: One of the things that impressed Saban so much about Golding (and it was one of the main reasons he was hired) was how much he understood about what Bama was doing on defense. That was in the interview process, right? To take that another degree, Saban has compared him to a young Pruitt.

Not unlike Gattis, Saban painted a clear picture of what was in store for Golding and how he fit into Bama's plans—and not for just one recruiting class or as a fill in. If it wasn't for their discussions and plans it's a very safe bet we'd have seen Golding move on to OU, or another school.

It's my assumption the addition of Lake wouldn't change Bama having Co-DC's. It would add an element they can improve on: an experienced guy with game plans (versus what people are labeling "defensive play calls.") The wrong plan can have the right call—but it's still wrong.

It's possible the staff changes at Bama will NOT be complete until after NSD.
While that's certainly possible, I understand they'd like to have things set by Junior Day.

Well then I'd probably expect Lake to stay at UW. Looks like a guy that Peterson has been loyal to and has to be extremely comfortable there. I'm sure we can offer him more but they will give him a raise and he will be the actual DC... Not Co-DC.

I hope I'm wrong, this dude seems like exactly what we need. Time will tell. RTR

If we started paying assistant coaches more it might help tolerate the ass rippings they get from CNS. It's not like we don't have it. It's my understanding we are 9th on pay scale for AC's.

@Tidestalker, don't be jumping off the bridge yet. :devilish: At least give me a few hours to drive there and push.

Their market is grossly overpaid right now (with the exception of less than half of a dozen.) We've just seen how an assistant coach can think he's worth more than he actually is...and what happened with said coach.

Nevermind the fact that Kirby as a HC has been revealed to be a douchebag, nah, an asshole...

He could construct a helluva game plan. He studied offensive tendencies to a science. Had defensive checks built in to force the offense to make another check that we knew they'd make. 09 Florida comes to mind.
