Quick question for you - Would you like to see Lake on board? Or prefer Golding...? I love the idea of Lake calling the D with Golding in a subordinate role. JMO
Eh, but what do we do with Golding? I was underwhelmed with the on-field results of his LB coaching this past season...
SLO mentioning "underwhelmed" leads me to an analogy: Major and Pendry.
When Major was hired back in '07 Saban saw him as one of the guys that has a lot of potential coaching. In Applewhite, he saw a good offensive football mind in the making. But, that needed some refinement and that's the main reason we saw Pendry working so closely with MA. In a nutshell, it was all about how to game plan against future opponents.
Golding: One of the things that impressed Saban so much about Golding (and it was one of the main reasons he was hired) was how much he understood about what Bama was doing on defense. That was in the interview process, right? To take that another degree, Saban has compared him to a young Pruitt.
Not unlike Gattis, Saban painted a clear picture of what was in store for Golding and how he fit into Bama's plansāand not for just one recruiting class or as a fill in. If it wasn't for their discussions and plans it's a very safe bet we'd have seen Golding move on to OU, or another school.
It's my assumption the addition of Lake wouldn't change Bama having Co-DC's. It would add an element they can improve on: an experienced guy with game plans (versus what people are labeling "defensive play calls.") The wrong plan can have the right callābut it's still wrong.
It's possible the staff changes at Bama will NOT be complete until after NSD.
While that's certainly possible, I understand they'd like to have things set by Junior Day.
