🏈 USC CB, injured after claiming he rescued drowning nephew (UPDATE: USC vetting story)

"Police and fire agencies didn't receive a 911 call about the near drowning, TMZ reported. The Los Angeles Police Department did, however, have a police report about an attempted break-in. After hearing a description of the man seen climbing around her apartment balcony, the resident said it sounded like her boyfriend, Josh Shaw."

- Buzzfeed (the ultimate in plagiarism haha)

So, he didn't save a kid from drowning, but he may have been running from the cops (LAPD attorney's claim) or attempting robbery. Awkward.

I hope he wasn't dumb enough to do either, but if he's dumb enough to make up a stupid story like that ..

This has not been a very good last 7-10 days for the USC football program.

Late last week athletic director Pat Haden washospitalized twice for undisclosed medical reasons. Then, senior captain Josh Shaw turned from hero tofabricator in less than 48 hours, with his future on the team in limbo. Now? Some ugly and startling accusations are hurtling out of the Land of Troy.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed to the local writers covering the team that Anthony Brown has decided to quit the football team. Prior to that, the senior running back — he had recently been moved from cornerback in a switch he requested — went on Instagram and, well, went here:

That social media post appeared to be the impetus for Sarkisian’s announcement. From Scout.com:

Sark said he was “shocked” at these allegations, called them “ridiculous” and welcomed us to talk to anyone in or around the program and they would tell us that it simply wasn’t true.

Sark said they tried to accommodate Brown, moving him to running back. He was unfortunately hurt but Sark said they still tried to get him to stay on the team. Sark felt he could help the team. Brown refused, quit the team then posted the following on Facebook:

“Couldn’t play for a racist man!!!!!!!!!!!
#FightOn”

Sarkisian is getting set to enter his first season as USC’s head coach and hasn’t even coached a game, yet he’s already seen two messy situations that need cleaning.

Already, though, his players are jumping to their head coach’s defense via Twitter.

Coach Sark is a great person/Coach! Please disregard comments that have been made by someone.

The Los Angeles Police Department on Thursday clarified how the name of USC football player Josh Shaw became part of an incident report over the weekend.

The LAPD said that the window of a downtown apartment where Shaw’s girlfriend lives had been pried open and a that man she said fit Shaw's description was seen descending from its balcony by eyewitnesses.

Officers responded about 10:40 p.m. Saturday to a report of a “screaming woman” inside an apartment at the Orsini Apartments on North Figueroa Street, Officer Sara Faden said.

The report came from a neighbor. Officers knocked on the door of the third-floor apartment where the screams were heard but there was no answer, Faden said. The officers then broke open the door and conducted a brief search of the apartment, finding no one inside. Officers noticed “the window had been pried open,” she said.

Faden said witnesses told police they had seen a black man with dreadlocks climbing from the third-floor balcony of the apartment. The woman who resides in that unit then arrived on the scene.

Given the description of the man provided by witnesses, she said it fit that of her boyfriend, Shaw.

The woman, whom police have not identified, reported nothing stolen from the apartment.

Faden said that the investigation is continuing and that the department would seek to interview Shaw.

Shaw, a senior football captain, was suspended indefinitely by USC on Wednesday after he admitted to school officials that he lied about how he sustained injuries to his ankles.

Shaw initially told USC he was injured after jumping off a second-story balcony to save a young nephew from drowning in a pool at a family gathering in Palmdale.

USC touted Shaw's heroism on its website and posted a link to the story on Twitter. Media outlets, including The Times, reported the account and it went viral over social media.

Shaw confessed Wednesday that the rescue story was a lie. Shaw's attorney said the player was injured when he fell off a balcony at the Orsini Apartments on Saturday.

I can honestly see the case with Brown being one of those incidents where a kid hears one thing that isn't even said. Chances are, Sark met with the kid, told him that he would grant his position change, BUT told him that PT wouldn't be handed to him and that he'd have to work his ass off. Brown then takes that as, Sark is calling me a lazy black man that is looking for handouts and live off of welfare. I have seen this rap firsthand! I once got onto some students for slinging the "N word" around at one another. I questioned them to whether they would like someone else call them that name if that person wasn't in the little group. I then asked if they would like it if I used that word. Naturally they said No! I told them that is why I wouldn't put up with it in my class. One kid actually went home and told his mom that I DID call him that. She came to football practice that afternoon pissed and looking for blood. Once I got her calmed down, I explained what happened and what was said, she changed her tune.

You're a teacher; you know until the parent hears everything that baby is always right.

Exactly @bama alum! Years ago, parents would side with the teacher and tear the child a new one for disrupting class. Now, parents always defend their child. Sometimes even AFTER getting the full story!! I even had a former teammate in HS go and twist something a coach said. Our baseball coach used to meet with all of those returning the next year and tell us what we needed to improve on in the offseason. He told this guy, you really should play more than one sport. It would help with your conditioning and help you drop about 10-15lbs. He was a pitcher and never could go beyond 5 innings because his stamina was terrible. The teammate immediately quit and then proceeded to tell everyone that coach called him a "fat ass!"

I am part of this generation (regrettably) and my parents always sided with the teacher. I was taught to take responsibility for my actions.

The Iowa women's field hockey coach got fired recently (despite being very successful and beloved), due to 3-4 former players claiming she bullied them. Considering the hundreds of girls who have stepped up to defend their coach and smash the girls, I have to think this is another case of it.

While there ARE legitimate cases where teachers are at fault, in my experience, it's usually the kids'.
