That’s what I love about insects. We just give them these random names at some point… rolly pollies, lady bug, earwig, fishing spider, etc. Knowing their classification names are something with 14 vowels that most of us can’t pronounce.
When I run across a spider or some such bug I’m unfamiliar with I’ll use one of those bug apps to identify it. Usually works well but it doesn’t bat .1000 on spiders. I had never seen a cow killer ant until about 4 years ago I saw one in my backyard. Damn thing looked like it could pack a punch. Looked it up on the app and it told me what it was, and is actually a species of wasp. That actually made sense, but for a minute I was worried I had some weird Africanized killer ant colony out back. LOL
