I’m trying to find awesome quilts to leave my kids but can’t find any real southern quilts. Anyone who used to quilt is dead and gone.

Quilters are for sure a dying breed. I think you can still find some at certain places (like Tannehill Trade Days or certain craft shows), but they are harder and harder to find. I've seen shop in places like Gatlinburg that claim hand sewn quilts, but I think only a potion is hand sewn, most all of it is done with machine. They look nice and are usually affordable, it's just the overall quality isn't as good.

Oddly, this popped up on my fb feed late last night... The West AL Quilters Guild presented some quilts to some Vets at a local retirement home.



I just checked their website, and they have an events page. Not sure how often they update it, but I'd imagine they make some pretty good quilts that they end up selling at craft shows.

I like that it. Good way to display them without them getting dusty. The 4 on the bottom like just like many of the ones I have. Also, the butterfly pattern. We have at least one of those somewhere and it looks just like that one.



The ones we actually used the most were just the scrap ones like you have in the bottom left corner. Everything from cold football games on a Friday night to camping. And those things were durable as hell. I have a couple that are coming apart and showing serious wear, but it’s the beating they took over the years from my family. No telling how many times they were tossed in the washing machine and dryer and the years took their toll. But I’m glad to have several others that look as good as the day they were sewn.

Know something I absolutely despise? Static electricity. In clothing or worst, in bed sheets (hotel rooms). I can't, won't deal with it. My little girl laughs at me but I DO NOT CARE. Static is the devil's electricity and I don't want any part of it.

Every body has their thing. Mine is spiders no matter how small. I’m not afraid of nothing else in the world except spiders.

My wife and kid hate them. We get a lot of the "granddaddy longlegs" variety, and you'd think there was a rabid bat in the bathroom when one gets on the ceiling. The wolf spiders outside are also an constant issue... those things love getting in the pool at night. The females that carry all the babies on their back freak the hell out of my wife.

There's a yellow and black spider. It gets about 2" ... not body, but legs. They grow the most intricate webs.

Looks scary as hell. Halloween stuff. I've seen webs around here that were yards apart. I don't mess with them.

I don't like spiders. But, those webs, in the morning with the dew...the damn spider is high.

Looks similar to something I'd always heard called a banana spider. Their webs are massive. I don't see them much around my house now, but have at other places I've lived in AL (usually very wooded areas).

That's what we always called them but they're really golden silk orb weavers. There's a bunch around clarke county.

That’s what I love about insects. We just give them these random names at some point… rolly pollies, lady bug, earwig, fishing spider, etc. Knowing their classification names are something with 14 vowels that most of us can’t pronounce.

When I run across a spider or some such bug I’m unfamiliar with I’ll use one of those bug apps to identify it. Usually works well but it doesn’t bat .1000 on spiders. I had never seen a cow killer ant until about 4 years ago I saw one in my backyard. Damn thing looked like it could pack a punch. Looked it up on the app and it told me what it was, and is actually a species of wasp. That actually made sense, but for a minute I was worried I had some weird Africanized killer ant colony out back. LOL

My mom still makes quilts/blankets, but she uses a sewing machine as her hands just won't hold up to do hand-quilting due to her arthritis.

Personally, I'd still consider that hand made. It's not a mass produced quilt in the basement of some warehouse.

Definitely not mass produced. Each one is unique. I LOVE the BAMA one she made me a couple years ago.
