šŸ“” The continuing fallout from Nassar at Michigan State.

NCAA going after their pound of flesh! Literally, let programs get away with cheating, looking at UNC basketball, Miami football, Ole Piss football, but going to go after a school because one of their Dr.s was molesting members of USA gymnastics, NOT AFFFILIATED WITH THE SCHOOL!!!! Sit down NCAA!!! Your drunk!!

Based on the victims statements I've read, Michigan State should be held accountable for this, whoever was involved. The hyperbole in me says shut the damn place down, imprison, and financially ruin everyone involved. Surprised some percentage of ~160 dad's haven't introduced him to pain...

I really don't care if the NCAA gets their shot. It's sad if they have to use Title IX to deal with this...much larger issue.

Several of his victims were MSU students(a mere drop in the bucket compared to the overall total) and he also victimized children in his offices on campus. One of them is still being harassed to pay the final visit, by the MSU accounts dept.

Not saying the NCAA should be the ones involved but it does involve MSU student athletes.

I stand corrected. I've been sick as a dog and really didn't follow the case closely, just been in "cat mode", sleeping 18-20 hours a day.

Dayum. This is messed up here:

Michigan State University, under U.S. Department of Education oversight since 2014 because of its mishandling of sexual assault and gender discrimination cases, asked federal officials last fall to end their monitoring of the university because administrators had been acting in "good faith" and had "gone above and beyond" in meeting standards laid out by federal officials, according to documents obtained by Outside the Lines.

The Oct. 10 request was rejected outright by federal officials for several reasons, but in large part because of how the university has handled sexual assault allegations against former MSU athletics physician Larry Nassar. The documents obtained by Outside the Lines show:

  • Michigan State administrators in 2014 did not notify federal officials that the university had dual Title IX and campus police investigations of Nassar underway even though federal investigators were on campus that year scrutinizing how MSU dealt with sexual assault allegations.
  • MSU administrators still have not provided to federal officials all documents related to the Nassar allegations.

Hiding investigations, Title IX investigations at that...can't see how that works out well in the end.

The hubris pride coming from these keepers of the gate is way beyond arrogance. If you don't get this as president and as a university hierarchy after Penn State and the Baylor humiliation you are either too dumb or evil to learn. The overall culture of these schools has to be way passed broke.

Hearing what Michigan State and USAG were fighting the last few days in court is sickening. They're saying they can't be responsible/accountable.

MSU President Simon's resigned but getting a nice payday, disturbing.

Title IX was created to deal with things like this--for the student body as a whole, not just athletes. I don't understand how you see it as sad Title IX is where this is going to fall when that's exactly where it's supposed to fall.

Now, I can see the sentiment of "it's sad Title IX is this far behind."

Agreed.

Infante's use of the word "IF" to start this except falls into the hubris category as well.

And, if you read what's he's mentioning here...it's Title IX.

Find Out How Widespread This Issue Is
If once (Penn State) is happenstance and twice (Michigan State) is coincidence, then the NCAA needs to find out if this is a trend. The NCAA needs to open a wider investigation to find out just how prevalent is the issue of athletics staffers, particularly those in regular contact and authority over student-athletes using that contact and authority to groom, harass, or assault them.
That should start with the NCAA committing to open a long-term confidential hotline for athletes to provide them with information. The NCAA should make it clear that complaints will be taken seriously and tips will be thoroughly investigated. This lets the NCAA act as a neutral third-party and alternative to the reporting process on campus which can be frustrated by the interests of staff and coaches.
Second, if the NCAA lacks the expertise to investigate such claims, it should get it. That could mean opening a new office in the NCAA and staffing it with experts in investigating sexual assault cases as well as victim advocates. Or it could mean engaging an outside party such as a law firm to provide that expertise. Either way, it would be a significant financial commitment to make toward taking the issue of sexual assault and harassment of athletes seriously.
