2024 record: 5-1, 2-1 in SEC
#7 Alabama travels to #11 Tennessee for an early afternoon showdown as teams with the same record with comparable stories on the 2024 season. Both schools are coming off a loss two weeks ago followed by shaky wins last week. Tennessee’s lone loss is on the road at Arkansas followed by a narrow win in overtime against the lame duck led Florida Gators. Tennessee’s offense started the season red hot, outscoring their first 3 opponents 191-13. That run included an, at the time, impressive neutral site blowout against NC State. The Vols slowed as conference play started with a sloppy win on the road against Oklahoma and their second-string quarterback.
Tennessee is led by RS Freshman QB Nico Iamaleava. The Californian Polynesian started the season ascending the Heisman watchlist, but that momentum has slowed as of late as he has only found the endzone once in the past 3 games. Also, Iamaleava has notably put the ball on the ground 5 times in the last 3 games. The offense has leaned on #6 Dylan Sampson at RB in the meantime. The junior from Baton Rouge is averaging 114 YPG over the past 3, with 6 total scores over the same period. Freshman field goal kicker Max Gilbert is batting 91.7% with a long of 45, having missed his lone kick of 50+.
The Tennessee defense gives up an average on 249.8 YPG, 20 YPG more than the next best and top total defense of Texas. They average 8.3 tackles for loss per game (7th in the nation), compared to Alabama’s 6.3, which puts the orange defense at the top of the
havoc ratings, excluding garbage time. As shown above, that havoc comes from the front 7, and the Vols are in the middle of the country for defensive back havoc ratings. Tennessee will be without senior LB and signal caller Keenan Pili who is out for the year after last week against Florida.
Verdict: There are so many variables on both sidelines in this matchup. Will the explosive or turnover prone Nico Iamaleava suit up for Tennessee? How will the fantastic play from the front seven of the Vols be affected by the loss of LB Pili? Alabama is rushing for 5.02 YPA, while Tennessee is allowing 2.24 YPA; who wins this battle in the trenches? This will be a back-and-forth battle if both teams show their best. The spread is Alabama -3.5 and the O/U is 56.5. If I choose to bet it will be a live money line play, hoping to get a better number than -152 early in the game.
