🏈 So who's the next defensive coordinator?

This is a total nonissue. Saban will have his defense on the field regardless. We wouldn't see a drop off with Malzahn at dcoordinator

The real issue is will Kirby Smart stick around for the playoffs...
I personally think it would be kinda shitty for him to leave

C'mon y'all. CNS has always known that Kirby was leaving at some point. PERIOD. I believe, that CNS mentored him along to do just this. As such, would it not be fair to presume that CNS was determining who would replace them?

I don't think it was just mere coincidence that Mel Tucker was brought in. CNS saw that Tucker was available last year & pulled him in for this very contingency. Just look at Tucker's bio for 1 minute. I'd be utterly shocked if he didn't get it & it is a flat out brilliant move by CNS.

Don't forget that Mel Tucker has 10 years of NFL experience (think NFL pension plan).
His vast experience is why I think he's only at Bama for a short period of time.

I'd rather see Lupoi get the DC gig and mentor under Saban like Smart did. Tucker can take some other bs title and still be a major part of the defense, but I don't think he should be named DC for a year, maybe 2 before he bolts back to the NFL or possibly takes a shot at HC.

I find it a bit ironic we have this thread, this weekend. Why? Coach Mac.

How many of you guys recall hearing him tell the story about the first time Saban called him? It'll be featured somewhere in the preview shows today, I assure you. If you've forgotten, Mac claims to have hung up on Saban when he called thinking it was one of his friends pranking him.

Coach Mac
Nuss
Tucker
Willis
Bo Davis and his return
Thompson and his return ( :tap: )

How many of these guys did anyone see coming?

I think a lot of what fans consider "puzzling" or "out of the blue" hires are because we don't have a full appreciation for how well a coach does his job each day (as opposed to just gauging it by game days and statistics) and what an extensive network a top tier coach like Saban can have.

RTR,

Tim

and what an extensive network a top tier coach like Saban can have.
He touched on a portion of that this week when talking about former GA's (Tosh, Tucker, etc.)

Tim, do you remember the conversation we had here about the temp hire of John L. Smith at Arkansas and how many of Saban's assistants and GA's had been on a staff with him? Mac is one of those and I believe Nuss may be as well. Bobby Williams is one, D'Antonio is another ... Hell, Tucker may be as well.

Exactly. For an extremely mobile profession, and one that entails a hiearchy of positions to progress through, you end up knowing a huge number of people, plus people your people know.
