| MBB/WBB đźŹ€ McNeese State vs Alabama 🏀 Nelson Scores 22 Points in Alabama’s Win (72-64)

Did not see the game live but watched the replay. Team was cruising along and lost their intensity and focus and went ice cold and lethargic it seemed. Good thing they had a big lead and hit a few free throws to manage that looooong of a drought. Two home games in a row struggling. The basketball team is like the football team throughout the season, they have a really high ceiling but a looooong way to go.

The Crimson Tide closes out its home stretch undefeated to start the season

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 2/2 Alabama men's basketball team capped off its three-game home stretch with its third consecutive win of the season, following a 72-64 victory over the McNeese State Cowboys inside Coleman Coliseum Monday night.

After giving up a 21-6 run late in the second half, the Crimson Tide were able to weather a very tough storm and hang on to claim its first win streak of the season.

Grant Nelson tallied his eighth 20-point game for Alabama with 22 points, including 8 from the charity stripe. Mark Sears and Latrell Wrightsell Jr. joined Nelson in double figures as the backcourt duo had 15 points apiece.
The Cowboys were led on the offensive end by Sincere Parker with 19 points off the bench, including a trio of three-pointers.

Head Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments

"We've played two really good mid-major teams. They've tested us on both games. I think it's going to be great for us moving forward. I'd like to see us pull away a little bit, we got up 21 on them early in the second half. I thought McNeese, got to give them a ton of credit, when we got up 21, they didn't cave, they didn't quit, they kept fighting. They ended up outrebounding us on the offensive side, they had 12 o-boards to our 10 in the first half really early on. They kept us off the o-boards in the second half and they got them. I thought they played really hard, I think it's good for our guys to go up against different types of playing styles. I thought the press with the switching everything stagnated our offense. We made one out of our last nine threes.

I thought the second half, particularly the last 14 minutes of the game, they did a really good job taking us out of what we wanted to do. I thought we played too slow. The ball ended up getting the right place at times way too late in the clock. We played down in the last 10 seconds of the shot clock way more often than we'd like to do. We knew they were going to be a good team, we knew they were going to be really athletic. Those guys are going to beat a lot of really good teams. They're picked to win their league for a reason. You got to give them a ton of credit. They made a lot of tough shots. They shot 11-of-22 on non-rim twos and most of them were pretty contested. They kind of defied the percentages there a little bit and you just have to give them a ton of credit for how hard they played and how they stayed in there."

I see this game in a different context than several opinions I've read here and there.
13 upperclassmen (7 Sr.) on a team that went 30-4 last season (ran into the Zags in round one.)

Solid ball club; still don't like the coach.
We saw the stretch of the Tide missing a few in a row, then get into a turnover trend when they went on their run. The run didn't shock me; happens in every ballgame especially when you're playing solid ball club (in spite of being a mid-major.) I saw a lot of new guys playing together for the Tide, versus a team that had about as many seniors as the Tide has new faces.

Experience ALWAYS plays a huge part in this game.

Consider this as well. Over the first few games how many times have you seen Nelson or Wrightsell? Now, look at this game. Wrightsell was +17 in the +/-: Nelson one point shy of 17. In my view, the staff made an intention decision to run the offense through those two as much as they could. With Purdue on the horizon, "game shape."

Take that same context on those two and look back at Memphis where it was evident they were going to "let them bang it up." "Game shape."

Just musing...

@Bammerboy321 I am wondering if the guys are simply ready for a high profile game and really unload. The last two games have seemed like a lion toying with a baby antelope. Still knocking the rust off as every athletes goes through that out of the gate, but curious if it's boredom with what they know they have and what they want to show. Much like the football team against Georgia.

I could see that, but I think it's a combination of new players in a new system, Oats trying to figure out the best lineups, and some complacency. Both times, the team got up big and I just didn't see the same sense of urgency. It was really evident yesterday. McNeese State was out hustling Alabama for loose balls and was actually winning on the boards until the last few possessions (Alabama tied them eventually).

All in all, typical early season stuff under Oats. Hate the guy, but Pearl definitely knows how to get his team to look good early in the season.

The guys have always struggled with playing down to competition when they feel it's a given. I think we saw some of that vs Mcneese and Arkansas State. They still turned it on when they needed to and that's all despite them having a terrible shooting drought from 3 the last 2 games. That means we can physically beat tournament teams from the paint. I imagine if we're hitting 3s teams will likely need 95+ points just to beat us.
