🏈 🔎 A closer look at this weekends opponent, Georgia.

UGA and defensive prowess...I guess we'll see it for the first time this weekend?

Saying their secondary hasn't been the strongest part of their defense the last few years would be a rhetorical statement. So far, it's holding true this season.

The NCAA database for pass efficiency defense ranks all 134 teams: UGA is 101st in the nation. (UA, 31st.)
If we look at total yards allowed in the passing game? 90th overall. (UA, 3rd.)

The more I look the more I see the narrative and the numbers don't match. It's making one thing clearer as the week goes on: it won't take some superhuman effort out of the Tide to win this ball game. It's pretty simple, really.

“Continuing to get evaluated,” DeBoer said. “Will probably know more here in the next 48 hours. Most importantly, he’s got motion and feeling. Just texted with him this morning. He told me to tell the guys he’s doing well. Just more tests and more things we’ve got to evaluate. That’s the latest on him.”

Sounds like they're trying to make sure everything is good to go. Obviously he can't play this weekend and I just want him to put his health first.

Getting TK back this week will be huge. I’m sure he will be on somewhat of a snap count, but I feel like Simmons filled in well and gained some valuable experience. We’ll need a fresh TK in the 4th if at all possible.

Apparently we can't use stats to compare these teams. Not enough sample size.

I think we need a lot of intermediate crossing routes to get their backers moving and if they blitz catch them in it and let our receivers catch and run.

I do have concerns and hope it doesn't turn i to the Georgia-Tennessee game a few years ago where Tennessee came in hyped and got smoked by Georgia at home.

In some cases I'd agree. Yesterday as I was looking over Connelly's SP+ ratings, in that post I noticed one area UGA rates higher than Alabama is in special teams play. Can we get a decent picture through three games? When one of the three is a game where they didn't punt nor kick a field goal? Yeah, that stat is skewed a bit. It's like opening with Army and seeing fans complaining about time of possession.

It's the stats that shine a positive light you can't use to make an observation. All stats that are negative? All true and significant and must be taken into account. 🙃

I agree, just making comments on other's remarks about how it's too early to break it down. I think we absolutely can make some expectations out of what we have seen so far. Relatively similar schedules to this point.

Special teams is a unique one. That is one area of our season I have zero time invested in and couldn't tell you one stat. Couldn't even tell you if our guy has kicked a field goal or not. Sad on me, but outside of the first game our offense has clicked and hasn't been forced to punt a lot, so even uncertain of our punter's ability outside of a couple against Florida State.

Georgia is not a blitzing defense and have not been. They get pressure with their front four and will rarely dial up a blitz and doubt they will often against Alabama because they know the deficit when it comes to their secondary and our receiving corp. That will be the strength of our offense versus their defense and honestly, is the only true advantage we have in this game from what I can tell.

Now, if we can get Jam rolling early, it will open everything up for us in my opinion.

My main concern is slowing the UGA run and short passing game because Stockton has some legit deep threats this year especially with Branch on board.

This is incorrect. Georgia blitzes their ILB's a ton. They stunt and plug their ILB's continuously throughout the game. And they'll call blitzes with their star, or sometimes with a corner. They blitz a lot, and will give you all kinds of different pressures.

And they're most definitely going to do that against Alabama Saturday. Our o-line has had problems this year picking up blitzes. If we don't do a good job of picking it up, they're going to get a free runner at Ty at some point in the game and sack him. Our RB's have to do a good job of picking them up if they do get by our line. Something else we could do is run a heavier formation like 12 personnel at times and help counteract that if we keep getting beat by it.

This was/is one of my biggest concerns about this Saturday. They're gonna test out line, we gotta be disciplined and play sound on all downs for 60 minutes, or they're gonna eat out ass up.

Then let's take it the playing field and what we've seen happen.

IF his statement is incorrect, the things you've pointed to on their defense have been ineffective.

Logic says it's one of two things: talent or coaching.

Here's some clips of it being pretty effective. If anyone has questions as to why on any of these clips, I'll explain.

Not sure what quantifies a "ton" however they use a 30/30/30 concept and at last count, 28% are blitz packages.

A stunt is not a blitz though. The 30/30/30 concept aims for 30% base, 30% stunts and 30% blitzes which is close to what they perform at. They have had some real "dogs" on that defensive line in the past that can get pressure on the QB more than most defenses. This season, it has been their LB's accounting for most of their TFL's to be sure. The transfer of Damon Wilson did not help the Dawgs defense this year either. I think he is second in the SEC for sacks playing for Mizzou this year.
