| FTBL Kenny Stabler arrested for DUI

But how dare you say we replace Eli. Eli is the same to Alabama like Golden Flake and Coke. Honestly, how often do you know of people to watch a game at home with their T.V. volume turned down and the radio on just to hear Eli call the game? You don't hear much of that happening in ANY sport.
Well, if you watch the game in the stands or on TV and listen to Gold call the game on the radio, you are faced with the dilemma of having to answer the question 'Who are you going to believe, Eli or your lying eyes?' Far, far, far too often his words do not match the action my eyes just witnessed.

Gold is a horrible play-by-play announcer if such minor things as score, down-and-distance, and yardage gained or lost (and why) are important to your understanding and enjoyment of the contest.

At some point in our immediate history, I long for the day when our football (and overall athletic program) makes hiring-and-firing decisions based on competency and MERIT and excellence rather than 'who knows or knew whom' and 'because we have kept someone around so long - and beyond their effectiveness, that we should keep them around as part of our legacy.'

What alagator said.

I will say I listen to Eli when its the JP broadcast (or Lincoln Financial or Raycom, whatever the hell it is this year). But that's basically becacause their broadcasters are even worse.

What Bo said! Eli is absolutely the pits when it comes to down and distance.

Eli is a good guy and all for Bama, but he doesn't compare well on the quality of his broadcast with the pre-stroke John Forney, or Paul Kennedy for that matter.

To young to really remember Forney that well, but Paul Kennedy IMO was awesome.

For those supporters of Stabler continuing, I've got to ask--If this were the 3rd DUI for an Alabama football player, would he remain on the team? I'm thinking not.

Stabler has had two previous DUIs, seven and thirteen years ago. He would have exhausted his eligibility before his second DUI. In tennessee, however, you can have five alcohol offenses and remain on the team.

I guess for my first post on this board, since I live in Knoxville, got an appropriate response. My father played and coached at Bama in the late 20's/early 30's. My wife is from Hueytown, Ala and we've been season ticket holders for almost 30 years. Work brought us to East Tennessee, which isn't a bad place to live except for all those UT people. I thought Fla Gators were bad when we lived down there, but these guys are more obnoxious. 41-14 has made this past year sweet however.

All that said, I've met Snake on several occassions and think he's a good guy and even better commentator. My thought is though he is a representative of UA. In fact, he's technically employed by the University and I think behavior like this should be addressed. I only asked my original question to consider if some would feel differently if it happened to a player, or even a coach, or even worse a professor. They all represent the University of Alabama.

And lastly, thanks for the link but I get the Knoxville News and had read all about this guy getting "5 strikes" and he's still gonna play next season. We can't compare ourselves with Fulmer and his uneven, inconsistent methods of punishment. We're better than that!

Sorry for the long post. I'm normally much more short and to the point.

Keith Jackson retired for a reason, didn't like the travel involved with weekly games, besides Mr. Jackson is up in years, so how long could it last anyway?

Namath would not want it, wouldn't pay enough. I am a Namath fan too, but lets face it, it is common knowledge Namath is all about the personal appearance fees, he doesn't even appear at Jets reunions for FREE.

Barker is the most obvious choice, especially considering the generational thing someone has already pointed out.

ELI is here till he doesn't want to be.

lol at u mentioning Namath. u wanna get rid of Kenny because of the drinking but would even mention Willie Joe? seriously?

Thanks for the welcome. He played football--Ellis "Red" Houston from Bessemer, Al. He played on the 1929 NC team. If you look at a picture of that team he's sitting far left, front row. In 1979, when we lived in Birmingham, that team was honored at a ball game and a reception afterward. We got to meet Coach Bryant that night and my photo with him and personalized autograph are proudly framed in our home.

I only brought up Namath after seeing his name on a previous post.

I saw the irony it to, just thought it was too easy to mention

besides, when did I say i wanted to get rid of Kenny, just rebutting to other peoples short list.

You got to live close by to do the broadcast. There is more involved than just showing up on Saturday.

To be on the safe side, Alabama should probably bring in Sly Croom, to at least just interview for the possible opening.

Sly might consider it after we play them this year. :D

Joe has given up the bottle and gotten himself clean and sober. That said I think Snake is irreplaceable as the color man for the Tide. If he does not return he will be sorely missed. I love the way he says "Atta boy."

With all due respect you are dead wrong. Eli is one of the most accurate play by play men in the business and is highly regarded as such. It is possible that since you watch the TV and listen to Eli, what you are noticing is a delay in the game. Since the radio broadcast tends to be a few seconds behind the game.

for the record i am supporting a post by It Takes Eleven!

i was just gonna say apples and oranges ...

Snake, we love you but what is most important must come first. Stop everything else and get yourself straight...all 12 steps. When your better, I'd love to see you come back but not before.

In the meantime, I think Roger Shultz is a great choice for a replacement. Roger is all Bama, full of personality, and knows the game. Also, I think that he is an excellent "good ol' boy" counter to Eli's professional approach.

Thanks for the back up. lol. I was trying to find any clips to back it up before I started debating and look like an idiot. Come to think of it, what comentator isn't off some on the play calling?
