🏈 How about this for a recuitment pitch....

I wonder if HC Mike Shula could use a variety of that ....if he went back to college ball...
"My last class I recruited at Bama ended up as National Champs"

IDK that I would want to use that if I was him lol Didn't Saban secure like half that class? I remember Kareem Jackson being that first guy that Saban was able to flip when he got to Bama.

What Nick needs is another undefeated or 2 seasons....
Bear had 3.....
Of course it is more difficult with the sec championship game and double bowls...
And all 3 have to be vs top tier teams.... not easy road to negotiate...
Hate that the 2016 slipped past him...and us....

I hate to say this but even Coach Bryant didn't do that! But CP.B. is still leading in my book, but just by a little bit.

^I will always love Coach Bryant but he has been surpassed in coaching achievements. Saban is doing this in the era of scholarship limitations. Bryant used to sign every top QB in the south plus a few outside th south, to keep them away from everyone else and then convert many of them to other positions.

Ok, but Coach Saban signed a guy from Hawaii that brought us back to win a Championship. You think Coach Bryant had the ability and funds to recruit like that?

^He did sign a guy from Hawaii, some guy named Peter Kim, pretty good kicker for Bama.

Don't get me wrong, not saying I like Saban better than Bryant, just that he has done more with less available scholarships.

I'm not taking sides here, because I wasn't even alive for one. I just like to make the case that recruiting and scholarship numbers are easily made up by the money, resources, and technology the coaches today have. We also have plenty of guys that never ever see the field on scholarship, so I don't always buy the whole numbers game except when it comes to signing new players. You could better answer this question for me, did folks all over the country know about Bear Bryant like they do Saban these days? Did his reach go far and wide like Saban's?

Peter was a transfer from UofH who walked on and earned a scholarship. First soccer-style kicker at Alabama.

Bryant was as well known as any cfb coach of his time. He was seen to be the top coach. Only difference, the game was not as popular as it is today. Also, there were no recruiting services, so kids did not often go as far out of their area, unless there was some connection to the distant school.

My main point was that Bryant effectively handicapped many of his competitors by keeping players away from them. It is an oft heard complaint by non-Bama fans of that era. It was not dirty or against the rules, it was smart by Bryant. The NCAA ended up making several rules to curb advantages he used. The scholarship limit was one of the major ones, first cutting it to 105 and after he was gone to 85. He was not the first to use tear away jerseys but he was the first to design plays to take advantage of them, so they outlawed those.

People complain that there is not enough parity in the game today, it was much worse back then.

It was also almost impossible to get the top teams to play each other in a bowl due to conference commitments. Even then, if you went to the #1 team and asked them if they wanted to play the #2 team or the #7 team (and almost guarantee a NC), they would more than likely play the #7 team.
