Alabama vs. Georgia Preview

When: Saturday 9/27 at 6:30 PM CT

Where: Tuscaloosa, AL

Georgia coach: Kirby Smart, 9th season, 97-16 overall

2024 record: 3-0, 1-0 in SEC

The Georgia Bulldogs kickoff in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night with revenge on their minds after the Tide cut their chance at a three-peat short in the 2023 SEC Championship, in what turned out to be Nick Saban’s final win with Alabama. Alabama leads the series 43-26-2 and is currently on a 1 game winning streak. Georgia’s last win against Alabama came in the national championship in 2022. That championship win was Kirby Smart’s only win against Alabama, compared to 5 losses, against his former mentor Coach Saban.

The 2024 Georgia team opened with a blowout against Clemson, a win that seems to age better with every passing week. They then walked through Tennessee Tech before a one-point victory on the road against Kentucky in their last game. Georgia trailed Kentucky most of that contest, and only took the lead at the start of the 4th quarter with the Bulldogs’ lone touchdown of the game. Senior QB Carson Beck is unsurprisingly coming off his worst passing game of the season against Kentucky, throwing for 160 yards and no scores. Like Alabama, Georgia comes into this matchup off a bye week.

Alabama LBs Qua Russaw and Jeremiah Alexander, and RB Richard Young are all probable per Wednesday’s availability report. Notably, OL Tate Ratledge is out for Georgia, while potential top five pick DL Mykel Williams will likely play, but not at 100%.

In 2023, Alabama had success in the air and took care of the ball. Milroe passed for nearly 200 yards and 2 TDs, and Alabama finished +1 in the turnover margin. Beck has success in the air, but all 3 touchdown scores for Georgia came on the ground. Pivoting to 2024 statistically, Georgia holds the 58th spot in offensive points per game (31.7), compared to Alabama’s #6 ranking with 49 points on average. The teams are much closer on the other side of the ball with Georgia giving up 6 points a game and Alabama 8.67.

This should be a strength-on-strength battle when Alabama has the ball and wishes to throw. Georgia is only allowing 91.3 yards a game with no scores, while Alabama is averaging 228.7 yards a game with 8 total scores. Alabama is averaging 238 yards on the ground with 13 scores, and while Georgia has yet to give up a score on the ground, they gave up 170 rushing yards in their last appearance against Kentucky.

Georgia averages 145.7 rushing yards per game with 4 total scores, along with 256.7 yards in the air and 7 scores for season. Alabama’s mishmash secondary, in the most complimentary matter of speaking, has performed well, yet it is critical that they can keep Malachi Moore healthy and on the field. This unit has only given up 1 passing touchdown this season. Detractors will mention a handful of overthrows that would have led to scores but may be overlooking the pressure up front that caused the inaccurate throw. Alabama allows 132 yards rushing, though that is skewed by the South Florida QB in week two. I do not expect Carson Beck will have similar success.

Verdict:

It is time for DeBoer to silence the doubters and make a name for himself as a new thorn in the side of Kirby Smart. It may be a sloppy night due to Hurricane Helene and the rainfall she brought to the southeast. That leads me to favor the team that can be more successful on the ground. I look for Alabama to sustain drives with Miller+Haynes+Milroe, until they pivot and take the top off the defense. I do not expect a ton of success in the air, but one or two throws may decide the game. Alabama must continue to pressure and rotate bodies up front to prevent the close calls in the air from becoming points. Georgia is currently a 1.5 point favorite, and that number continues to shrink. I will gladly take the home team money line at +100.

Alabama- 24
Georgia- 21

Getting a little weary now that everyone and their momma is on the Alabama train now. I wanted a salty team going into tonight. Hoping we're still the underdog, but as of this morning it seems the tide has turned and everyone is on us.
Yep everyone picking Bama will give UGA something to have an edge about. Hope it does not matter but afraid it will.
