🏈 Fall Camp thread - 2018! --Updates from scrimmage #2

And to think when coach was hired all you heard was he would be gone before the seat got warm ...

A decade later and he is really settling into the job . He has always offered up his services for other sports in recruiting but I think he is really savoring the experience as he has mellowed .

In that article of ten or twelve stories that define Saban - the story of having his staff learn five pages about the women's basketball recruit and dropping everything to speak with her jibes with his commitment to a school and all programs. Such a great photo of those band kids, excitement and school spirit, shock and joy combined as Saban takes the time to thank them.

If Saban was only a cold, calculating tactician he'd be named Belichick. He's better. Even when he was the tough guy with the media early on, you didn't have to look hard for the soft side as they raised money for the charity and supported the other programs early on.

RTR,

Tim

I think that's why (or part of why) Saban is virtually the perfect college coach and wasn't a good fit in the NFL, while Belichick is virtually the perfect NFL coach but would struggle with everything outside of the on the field aspect of coaching in college. I mean how many coaches get their start in the NFL and then never go anywhere else except the pros? Very rare.

@OldPlayer, @UAgrad93, received a text a few minutes ago about visitors for scrimmage being canceled. You got anything on that yet?

Wouldn't be surprised if it was because there were too many leaks after this past scrimmage. Garry Harris sure has been making a big deal over former players being allowed to tweet about the scrimmage while media is not allowed inside.

I sure hope he doesn't lock everyone out.

Honestly, it's kind of lame. The media gets to go out there and watch 20 minutes or so of bland position drills but not see anything else because they don't want it all over the place, yet those that attend scrimmages are constantly tweeting out pictures and talking about it on social media. Hell, I've seen CURRENT players posting video of practice film.

Henderson: Alabama Football Fall Camp Journal (HOT 11 ADDED) | BamaInsider.com

No. 32 Damien Harris - Running Back - Senior

The more and more I see of Damien Harris, the more and more I feel he might be the most underrated running back that Alabama has had entering the season. Everyone is excited to see the “next” running back, but Harris looks to be a man among boys, even at the college level and has worked on his speed, upfield cutting ability, and is no doubt due for a thousand yard season, possibly much more. Feed the man.

No. 92 Quinnen Williams - Defensive Lineman - RS - Sophomore

The media spoke with big Raekwon Davis today and Davis was very complimentary of Williams. “That is a guy that can do anything,” said Davis. “He’s a freak on the field.” Williams has some big shoes to fill in replacing Da’Ron Payne, but he continues to receive high praise. “He is one of the guys that I am proud of,” said Saban following Alabama’s first scrimmage. “He has developed and what he’s grown in, improving himself physically, having a lot of maturity, plays with a lot of effort, smart player, and I think he is one of our more productive guys right now.”

No. 14. Deionte Thompson - Defensive Back - Junior

The leader of the defensive secondary. We got a few tastes of his ability last year during the National Championship and he looks the part, is the part, and he’s the hardest hitter in the secondary. He’s more of a ball hawk and you would think he is due for a six to seven interception type season.

No. 8. Joshua Jacobs - Running Back - Junior

100% healthy and that is dangerous for opposing defenses. He’s looking similar to a bowling ball running down field with moves side to side like a gazelle. Jacobs seems hungry for the football, I think he just needs an open field and it’s over. It might be wise to get him on your college fantasy football team while you can. “He’s absolutely 100%,” said Saban. “Very explosive, quick, fast, no issues, he’s been able to take all the reps and has fared very well.”

No. 4. Chris Allen - Linebacker - Sophomore

Alabama really likes what they have in Allen at 6-foot-4 and 242-pounds as he is very versatile showing he can play with the outside linebackers and is currently working with the middle backers because of a depth issue. Allen is going to play plenty this year and should eventually rise to be one of Alabama’s star-studded linebackers.

No. 58. Christian Barmore - Defensive Lineman - Freshman

True freshman Christian Barmore has looked stellar to put it simply. This is from Raekwon Davis on Wednesday, “He’s going to be something great. He has a great work ethic and came into camp with great technique and he’s going to have a great role on the team.” When Barmore gets his named called to play this year, he’ll be ready.

No. 2. Patrick Surtain II - Defensive Back - Freshman

He has that “it” factor and he has a long and lanky range which should make him a problem for receivers when he’s on the field. He has good acceleration, but he’s still learning the part and while he will likely step on the field in some capacity this season, he’s a long ways from being an instant impact player. That is not at all a knock on him because you can see it from watching him at practice, he’s going to be a big time player with a future in the NFL.

No. 41 Jaylen Moody - Linebacker - Freshmen

The 6-foot-2, 227-pound freshman linebacker looks to be a star in the making. He’s made some plays during Saturday’s scrimmage and looks like he could step on the field sooner than later. Stay tuned as we are hearing great things on Moody.

-- Safety Daniel Wright had been out for a few practices but was back working with the secondary.

-- Outside linebacker Jamey Mosley was back practicing in a full-contact jersey after missing a few practices.

-- Brian Robinson also looked fine for a second straight day after being limited Monday. Najee Harris remains out and it's unclear when he'll return with a foot injury, AL.com reported Tuesday.

-- New middle linebacker Ale Kaho was in his final practice before he's allowed to don full pads. He was in helmet and shoulder pads again.

-- And once again, it looked like Jedrick Wills was working at right tackle with Alex Leatherwood at right guard.

-- The secondary was working in the nickel package with the first and second groups. Xavier McKinney was at safety next to Deionte Thompson with Shyheim Carter at Star and the two corners were Saivion Smith and Trevon Diggs.

-- The second team nickel had Patrick Surtain II and Jared Mayden at cornerback with Wright and Kryriq McDonald at safety. Keaton Anderson and freshman Eddie Smith were shadowing at safety.

-- The Green Bay Packers had a scout on hand.

Wednesday Insider Report (11th practice)

Wednesday Insider Report (11th practice) | BamaInsider.com

Alabama worked under the lights for a final time this preseason as players participated in their 11th of 20 total practices leading up to game week for their season-opener against Louisville on Sept. 1. Players were dressed in full pads Wednesday and practiced under clear, 84-degree weather. Here are some notes from the media viewing period.

— Jamey Mosley (shoulder) and Daniel Wright (shoulder) were both full participants at practice. Both players missed the scrimmage on Saturday and were not seen during Monday and Tuesday’s practices. Mosley had a harness on his bicep but was moving fine during drills.

— Running back Najee Harris (lower leg) was still absent from practice. He was seen earlier in the day zooming down the hallways of the Mal M. Moore Facility in a push scooter and seems to be in good spirits. An AL.com article published Tuesday stated Harris could miss the next two weeks but could make it back in time for Alabama’s season-opener against Louisville on Sept. 1.

— After appearing limited during Tuesday’s practice, running backs Brian Robinson and Damien Harris look to be at full speed Wednesday.

— Alabama’s secondary practiced with the inside linebackers out of the nickel package. Trevon Diggs and Saivion Smith were the two outside cornerbacks, while Shyheim Carter played Star. Xavier McKinney and Deionte Thompson were the two safeties, while Mack Wilson and Dylan Moses were the two linebackers.

— The second unit consisted of Patrick Surtain II and Jayln Armour-Davis at corner and Jared Mayden at Star. Kyriq McDonald was shadowed by Eddie Smith at one safety position, while Wright was shadowed by Keaton Anderson at the other. Markail Benton and Joshua McMillon were the two linebackers.

— During team drills, Alabama’s running backs worked with the quarterbacks on both read-option handoffs and short screen passes.

— For the third practice in a row, Alabama worked Jedrick Wills at right tackle and Alex Leatherwood at right guard. It will be interesting to see if that’s the route Alabama goes for its final preseason scrimmage this weekend.
