🏈 Fall Camp thread - 2018! --Updates from scrimmage #2

I hate to be that guy (no I dont) but yeah, the guy that got criticized all the time for being "too safe" totally threw 3 picks in the scrimmage. Sure...

Highly likely if he is pressing and has lost his confidence. I’ll be in attendance next weekend and I will let you guys know what I see.

I'll be there as well. We should compare notes.

Monday Insider Report: Practice No. 9 | BamaInsider.com

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama held its second evening practice of preseason camp Monday as players practiced wore full pads under clear, 81-degree weather. Monday night’s workout was the ninth of a total of 20 preseason practices this fall. Here are some notes from the media viewing period.

— Najee Harris was not with the rest of Alabama’s running backs during the viewing period. There were reports Saturday that Harris injured his leg. Although, that was not mentioned by head coach Nick Saban during his post-scrimmage news conference.

— Alabama appeared to shake up its offensive line with Alex Leatherwood working at the guard position while Jedrick Wills moved to tackle.

— Freshman Ale Kaho was again wearing shorts and a shirt during practice as he takes part in the NCAA’s acclimation process. Kaho will be able to wear shoulder pads the next two practices before he is allowed to dress out in full pads on Thursday.

— Alabama’s secondary worked in two groups out of the nickel package. On one side of the field, Trevon Diggs played outside corner with Shyheim Carter at Star and Xavier McKinney at safety. The other side of the field had Saivion Smith at outside corner with Kyriq McDonald at Star and Deionte Thompson at safety. Those two groups could end up representing Alabama’s dime formation with McDonald taking the Money role.

— A third grouping consisted of Josh Jobe at outside corner, Patrick Surtain II at Star and Jared Mayden at safety.

— As expected, outside linebacker Jamey Mosley and safety Daniel Wright were both absent from scrimmage. Saban said both players are dealing with shoulder injuries.

— Anfernee Jennings led the outside linebackers, followed by Christian Miller, Christopher Allen, Jarez Parks, Cameron Latu, Eyabi Anoma and Ben Davis. It looks like Davis will continue to stay with the outside linebackers now that Kaho is with the inside group.

— Monday's practice didn't give much insight into the quarterback battle. Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovaila continued to alternate while throwing with receivers.

We just can't let Coach see us writing anything down!! LOL

Amazing how fast our DB group has shaped up this summer. That most of them are already apart of the roster is fantastic. With the exception of Savion Smith, who has reps and experience as a junior transfer I'm feeling good about Carter, McKinney, Thompson, and Diggs. Lousiville will give us lots of answers.

After almost every practice, we hear all these glowing reports at all positions but the most buzz of fall camp has to be Jaylen Waddle. Over and over everyone is talking about his explosiveness. I personally thought when we got him maybe this guy is David Palmer quick. Turns out, maybe he is. How wild would that be? With his build and size, and being a freshman he needs to specialize, but I hope Locksley has got something special in mind with this youngster beyond special teams.

TUA went 54/58 against the 1st team D in practice before the Clemson and Georgia games.

LMAO ! Tua 54-58 vs Bama first team D, and CNS continued to ride the inept Hurts ?!?

I'm never going to understand how CNS has managed to be heaped with praise because he made a move most any other coach in the country would have made a month earlier ?

Is anyone in the media ever going to ask him how he sat on such a talented QB for so long when his starter was struggling so mightily ? I mean C'Mon people, two quarters into the NCG with zero points should have been too late. No way Bama should have won that game. Tua had to perform a small miracle to win that game. Talk about tossing a live grenade onto someones lap. You know because that is the ideal situation to trot the backup QB into the game. Sheesh. Totally mismanaged.

Wow...you are likely to get ripped by the “Nick Saban is God” crowd, but that is actually a question I’ve been asking myself since as far back as Vanderbilt.

Yea, Saban really sucks. (extreme sarcasm)

We weren't losing with Hurts (until Auburn). With all of Tua's talent, he didn't have the belief by the team. Tua got better every week during the season. He demonstrated that he could lead the team, not just play. When he came in after halftime, he had the faith of the team and it really helped that Jalen provided support from the sideline.

And too be blunt, IMO the team realized that it was time for something different if that game was going to be won.

I think Ridley wanted a change for a long while. I have always been a supporter of Hurts, and still am to the point that he progresses and finds some success when given a chance again, but I can't count on how many times Ridley should have gotten the ball when he was wide open running down the field. Sadly he could have doubled or even tripled his production at Alabama if Hurts would have gotten him the ball when he was actually open downfield. You could just see his frustration each and every game last season.

I should point out that the way that Saban made the change at halftime was a key to the decision. Hurts bought into it. That's brilliant coaching.

Yeah, makes me wonder why you haven't won six national championships.

So, Najee Harris was wheeling around on a knee scooter today. Usually I would say that means broken ankle but I've seen them giving those things out to kids with just sprains now (instead of crutches), so who knows.

I understand why he stuck with Jalen... Though I don't neccessarily agree I understand.

Had things went sideways against Clemson the move probably could and would have been made. But the D was so dominant it turned into one of our normal SEC games where not turning it over was more than enough to win. And at that point, the media circus around a QB change after a semi final win would have been unbearable for Saban. So I get it.

On the other hand, if 54/58 is true, does anyone blame Tua for considering a transfer? Had he not gotten into that championship game and that inept offense rolled out in the second half I wouldn't have blamed him for packing his bags straight form Atlanta.

Just damn glad it all worked out. That kid is the whole package. And honestly I think Jalen is close to being the whole package minus his ability to anticipate... He has many great QB qualities. Tua just happens to be "that dude"

Tuesday Insider Report (Practice No. 10)

Tuesday Insider Report (Practice No. 10) | BamaInsider.com

Alabama reached the halfway point of its preseason as players participated in their 10th of 20 preseason practices Tuesday afternoon. Players were dressed in full pads under sunny, 91-degree weather for the workout. Here are some notes from the media viewing period.

— Najee Harris was not seen during the media viewing period for a second straight day after reportedly injuring his leg during Saturday’s scrimmage. There was some chatter from spectators during practice that he was seen in the weight room lifting weights. Harris was not mentioned in head coach Nick Saban’s post-scrimmage news conference Saturday.

— While Najee Harris was absent, Damien Harris and Brian Robinson appeared to be going through drills at half speed with the rest of the running backs. We saw this early last week with Josh Jacobs who, ended up being fine, so it may be nothing.

— Alabama continued its experiment of switching Jedrick Wills to right tackle and Alex Leatherwood to right guard beside Ross Pierschbacher. Deonte Brown was also seen on Pierschbacher’s left on some reps. It’s worth noting that the unit practiced in somewhat of a split grouping with four linemen working at a time.

— Offensive linemen still seem to be getting used to their new positions. There were several mistakes on one drill with multiple players jumping offside on different occasions.

— Freshman linebacker Ale Kaho wore shoulder pads for the first time with the inside linebackers. He’ll have to wait one more practice until he can dress out in full pads.

— Anfernee Jennings led the outside linebackers in drills followed by Christian Miller, Cameron Late, Jarez Parks and Eyabi Anoma. Latu moving ahead of Parks is a slight change from the norm, but order during individual drills doesn’t always mean much.

— We saw Stephon Wynn (ligament strain) limping into the weight room with no shoes on and a brace on his right knee. He wasn’t moving too well. Linebacker Jamey Mosley (shoulder) and safety Daniel Wright (shoulder) were also absent from practice.

And to think when coach was hired all you heard was he would be gone before the seat got warm ...

A decade later and he is really settling into the job . He has always offered up his services for other sports in recruiting but I think he is really savoring the experience as he has mellowed .

That's what the LSU crowd was trying to tell us. After we got our first NC it got even louder. Seems to me, the first criteria for any head coach at Alabama is that he absolutely loves the limelight. Regardless of credentials, if he doesn't like the rock star treatment and attention, no amount of coaching exploits will be enough. Our coach must have Crimson swagger.
