Insider Report

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama players worked out inside of Bryant-Denny Stadium before their final scrimmage of preseason camp. The team was dressed in full pads under rainy, 76-degree weather. Saturday’s scrimmage was the 14th of a total of 20 preseason practices this fall. Here are a few notes from the media viewing period.

— Tua Tagovailoa was taking snaps with the first-team offensive line to begin practice, while Jalen Hurts took snaps with the second-team unit. Both quarterbacks were throwing to receivers at the same time.

— Alabama’s first-team unit on the offensive line consisted of Jonah Williams, Lester Cotton, Ross Pierschbacher and Alex Leatherwood and Jedrick Wills from left to right.

— The second unit was made up of Scott Lashley, Joshua Casher, Chris Owens, Deonte Brown and Tommy Brown.

— Outside linebacker Christopher Allen was not seen during the media viewing period. Jamey Mosley (shoulder) was in a red jersey but did not participate in drills when I was watching. Instead, he played catch with Terrell Lewis (ACL) off to the side.

— Running back Najee Harris (foot), offensive lineman Matt Womack (foot) were also missing from practice.

— Damien Harris led the running backs followed by Ronnie Clark, Brian Robinson and Jerome Ford. Josh Jacobs didn’t look like he was participating in drills when I watched him. He was not in a black jersey. This doesn’t necessarily mean Jacobs is injured. He’s looked limited at times this offseason, but Alabama head coach Nick Saban recently said he’s at 100 percent.

— Henry Ruggs III led one outside group of receivers and was followed by Xavian Marks, Derek Kief and Slade Bolden. DeVonta Smith led the other outside group and was followed by Tyrell Shavers and Xavier Williams. Jerry Jeudy led the slot receivers and was followed by Chadarius Townsend and Jaylen Waddle.

— Alabama’s first-team secondary consisted of Trevon Diggs and Saivion Smith at cornerback with Deionte Thompson and Xavier McKinney at safety.

— Mack Wilson led the inside linebackers and was followed by Dylan Moses, Markail Benton, Joshua McMillon, Ale Kaho and Jaylen Moody.

Met up with @OldPlayer today there at the scrimmage. Good putting a face to the name.

I think we both agreed that the looks of the QB play today is going to make it a difficult decision. Jalen hit a couple of deep balls early and while Tua didn’t get the chunk plays, he threw some darts into tight windows that only the WR had a chance at getting. Tua still seems to be the pick to me. He surveys the field and gets the ball out quick. Jalen still seems to be “look to the first read then run.” To me, there is where the difference lies.

Jaylen Waddle is going to be very hard to keep off the field! He is a nightmare at the slot position for a DC to try and defend. He will be special in the return game.

The kicking game was solid in my opinion. The grad transfer from Temple nailed one from 50+ that landed over the canopy cover to the tunnel!! There was a miss from around 48 during the 2 minute drill that I believe was his. Bulovas was solid as well. He had 1 kick blocked by Diggs and his kickoffs settled inside the 5 each time. Delong is good! He isn’t JK Scott good but who is? He did have a shank or two but you can imagine it being possible with Saban standing beside you in the end zone!!

Secondary is going to be good! DL and LB play will help them out as well. DL will be a force as usual.

OL is going to be a strength! Williams, Cotton, Pierschbacher, Leatherwood, and Wills are some maulers! While Womack going down hurts depth wise, we have 3 OLines!!!
RB- D Harris, Josh Jacobs, Brian Robinson, and Jerome Ford all looked good. Ronnie Clark just keeps plugging away! You have got to love him!!! Jacobs looks like he is finally healthy again and is a man on a mission. N. Harris zooming around on his scooter better get healthy soon. Too bad for Jerome Ford when Najee does come back. He is going to be a good one.
WR- Jeudy, Ruggs, the Natty winner D Smith, followed by Waddle, Townsend, Shavers, Kief, X Williams are as talented a bunch as any in the nation.

This is just one mans opinion. Take it for what it’s worth. You’ve probably already read 15-20 different takes.

Not to be too critical of our new DBs, but it is a position that our head coach involves himself. With all the cross-training going on right now, I wonder if some of the confusion isn't from having to process all the early info and rotating in coverage so much?

We will need the offense to be special because I think D will struggle at times. Can’t loose #24 & #4 and not miss a step. Along with so much inexperience at DB, I’m afraid we give up more points than we’re accustomed to.

This dead horse has been beatened to death, but wouldn’t it be nice if a light came on for Ben Davis?

Perception by immersion for Davis. We are running low on depth.

Is it conventional wisdom that his issue is not being able to pick up the defense and know his assignments? God knows he looks the part. Hard to believe it could be physical but evidently he did come from a small classification on HS level where he was so much bigger/faster/stronger than opponents.

This is the same arguement we heard last year after all we lost, so I'm not worried about our defense. Depth, sure, but we still have better 2nd and 3rd string than most 1st strings around the country. We have an offense that will definitely take pressure off of them and will force teams to score 30-40 to beat us, and that just will not happen. I think an undefeated season should happen, but one loss is always VERY possible as anything can happen.

So, you texted him and he stood up and waved? I got a laugh out of the mental picture of @OldPlayer standing up in the lower bowl and waving.

We had a good laugh about that as well. We were all down in the North End Zone suite and we were supposed to sit in the seats reserved for that area. Hard to get 100+ old men with bad knees to cram in a small area and sit comfortably. We sort of spread out all in the North end zone area. He gave a description before he stood. We were maybe 50 feet from each other the entire time.

HEY! It's OldPlayer, not AncientPlayer or SenilePlayer. :-)

@UAgrad93 and I compared notes and if a decision on QB had to be made only based on yesterday's scrimmage, it would be a very tough decision. Both QBs had several long balls. Were they perfect? No. But many of the concerns we've all had were minimized.

Waddle will make an impact in multiple ways. DBs don't look like rookies. The issue with the OL is there is a limit to how many can be on the field at one time. The loss of Womack won't be a concern.

I want to point out that @UAgrad93 has made a brave effort to post his review. After Lowry's social media comments, there were multiple signs about taking pictures and posting information about what we saw on the interwebs. If he's banned from future practices, I don't know him.

I will add that someone put out there that Jalen threw a Pick 6 and it was Josh Jobe that got it. There were no picks yesterday. Braxton Barker did have a fumbled handoff to our 7th or 8th back and Jobe scooped it up but was forced out at the 5 by Barker.

A study in human behavior.

I'm still a bit amazed at how people can walk into a museum and see signs that say, "don't touch," and they follow simple instructions. But, when it comes to scrimmages? I saw multiple Twitter handles yesterday among the same people I've seen multiple usernames all posting information about what was happening.

I get it's entertainment. I also get a simple request is often simple to oblige. While I'm judging from afar I'm finding it pretty easy to put them in a category all by themselves.

Yeah, I caught that.

I had a few conversations last night about what a few saw at the scrimmage yesterday. I'm not as down fretful as some others about this season. A few more injuries and that'll very likely change.

"Never heard of her." Ha ha, cracks me up just thinking of you saying that if questioned about @UAgrad93 .

Overlooked this fall:

Over the summer months I know I've referred to Jaylen Waddle more than a dozen times. As you've read over reports you can see the hype he carried before arriving in Tuscaloosa, along with what we've been talking about, is coming to fruition. However, there's one guy that I feel is being overlooked this fall--though understandably so.

When Tyrell Shavers arrived on campus in January of last year there was a little buzz about him based on his height (6'6'.) It's the same conversations we've seen over the last few years about tall wide receivers and their threat(s.) There's a few on campus now--most of them walk-ons--that fit that bill of a receiver that's 6'4" or taller: Kief being the most well known. No one of this group has made headlines so excitement being a bit muted isn't a shock.

We haven't talked about Shavers this year largely due to his injury keeping him out of spring camp. I don't know why he isn't getting more attention this fall because he's been having a good camp.

In the last scrimmage he had several receptions. What's catching my eye is how big of a target he'd be on crossing routes and the fact they have him running them. It's a body development thing in a sense. On that tall of a frame, he needed weight. It's one of the reasons he 'shirted in '17. The injury keeping him out of spring helped on that end as well giving him a little more time to put on some pounds. He's said to be coming together, physically.

When it comes to that breakout frosh I'm still in the Waddle camp on offense. Here's a little something I'll add to that.

You will remember Norwood going up high against LSU and how it's a embedded image in your mind. You're going to see some of the same things out of Shavers this fall--and not just across the middle. Will they be as dynamic as Kevin's plays? No. But only due to context of when they happened.
