| LIFE CV-19: Effects on life, work, and sports

Honestly can't say I can recall ever seeing anyone in the professional world with the no mustache beard, insert CDC Director Redfield.

C. Everett Koop. Reagan’s Surgeon General was last I remember

Alarming trend, how accurate the numbers are is anyones guess based on what's already been reported. Positive and probable numbers are combined and reported as possible for in many areas (example New York States 3,778, even my sister mentioned this weeks ago - she's an ICU nurse in Birmingham). The CDC is now combining both numbers as well, while noting the probable numbers.

Did you see this? Total death numbers seem to conflict.

@UAgrad93 Texas Governor finally canceled school yesterday. Don't know why it's taken them this long.

My high school senior is bummed there was no closure, meaning she didn't realize her last day AT school was her last day AT school.

Now just waiting of them to figure out graduation.

@It Takes Eleven I don't know if you've caught it yet (and I'm sure WaPo or USA Today have articles up by now) ... Vox Media just furloughed quite a few writers. We see their stuff here during the football season through different SB Nation writers.

I'm wondering how much of an impact their labor union strike and subsequent contract(s) pushed the timeline up? As in, without that contract in place we wouldn't have seen those layoffs as quickly.

I don't know if you've read their agreement. From my perspective having been around this genre for awhile now ... overpaid. I realize how much they are hurting with very little new content to report and while their content is good, it's not in the 50K plus minimum good even when there's sports to report.

(Totally off the subject, but when I see some of these things included in an employment contract ... leaves me shaking my head. It's one thing to ensure there's no discrimination, it's another when it's demanded?

Language ensuring the company will honor preferred gender pronouns and provide access to gender-neutral bathrooms

It's a work contract. Let me do my job, leave me the hell alone.)

@planomateo on a related note I saw mention of ACT and SAT score minimums being waived for athletes. I'm sure there's a GPA clause in there, somewhere. Or maybe I should say "I hope there's...?"

When all this started, there were reports that universities were requiring deposits prior to acceptance. Talk about some BS.

How does one start residency in another state when process will be delayed due to circumstances. How much harder is it to get a drivers license now? Get a job to support yourself? Get an appartment when you can't get employed.

Lots of challenges ahead for us personally. But we'll figure it out and do the best we can with the situation.

Your kids have been going to school this whole time? Our kids in Georgia have been out a month with school closed for like three weeks now for the year.

My senior has been doing remote eLearning since returning from Spring Break, checking in daily for attendance and doing some work and submitting it. Actually I was relayed information incorrectly, Texas will continue doing eLearning through the remainder of the school year, 5/22 for us.

Here in state, the state superintendent has left it up to the individual systems to decide. Jefferson, Blount, and several City systems have declared their seniors "finished" as of 2 weeks ago. Our superintendent did no such thing, but allowed the principal to declare, "because of their schedule, they didn't have enough hours in so they had to do the E-learning route until 5/22, even though it is being called "enrichment work and can't be counted against those that may not have internet/wifi capability." My son is pissed because a teacher or two have elected to try and cram a years worth of assignments into the last 9 weeks. He is doing the work, but he is none too happy with it. He started working with my brother-in-laws company before all of this started and the classwork just interferes with his ability to make money.

Ahh, gotcha. We have three in school, so my wife is trying to teach three kids in three different grades 3rd, 1st, and Pre-K), while working and trying to keep a clean house. I'm still going to work each day.

Ironically they went to Disney for spring break with the school, heard nothing from the school on Coronavirus. As they were leaving Disney, the park closed down. School still never said anything about safety.

I'm glad to have the kid years behind me 😃

In March, middle of the month as I recall, we were reading press clippings attacking De Blasio for working out at the YMCA while businesses in New York (bars and restaurants, etc.) as well as schools were still up and running.

A narrative:

A growing amount of evidence this all started in a lab in China.
A growing amount of evidence China, aided by releases from WHO, tried to cover up what happened.
If a foreign government is trying to cover up a health crisis their country is responsible for is it not the role of the Intelligence Community to be aware?
Where was the Intelligence Committee's attention in February, or January if you prefer?

To not saying anything before taking kids to a heavily concentrated area filled with tourist? No emails, announcements, nothing... Just odd decision by the school.

Yeah, but not saying anything before taking kids to a heavily concentrated area filled with tourist. Just odd decision by the school.
In hindsight you see it as an odd decision by the school. I know you well enough you'd wouldn't have your children in a situation where you felt they were handled recklessly. You mention there was nothing said by the school, do you recall what you'd heard at the time? I suspect not a lot. If you had you'd have never let them go.

We considered not letting our senior go, we were very close to pulling the plug on the whole thing.

It was definitely early in all the conversations, March 7th is when they flew down. I just thought it was interesting they didn't address it, nothing about having kids take extra precautions (ie, washing hands more frequently), etc. Almost like it was no big deal., but your taking our kids.

We told our kiddo to be safe, wash your hands, no sharing food, etc.

Photo from Monday March 9th. Believe Disney shutdown 4 days later.

At the end of the day, trip was a success, as far as I know, nobody got sick. She got to hang out with friends for one last time and then she's been stuck at home since. Not really how she wanted to end her last 2 months in Texas.

The numbers they are announcing are in fact unbelievable. They are still covering this up. They either let this out purposely or accidentally.

Why didn't it alarm anyone in global supply chain that one country was buying up all the medical equipment all of the sudden. All the bullshit pointless government jobs and nobody is looking for things like this? We are the United States right?

We need to wake up, pull everything out of China as quickly as possible. We need a better plan for how to deal with pandemics in the future, especially those from China.
