Quick update in case any of you guys missed this ...

Kirby has hired Jim Chaney as his offensive coordinator. It really doesn't make sense to me. What has Kirby seen in Chaney over the last few years that makes him think he's the right guy for the UGA OC job?

He grabbed an Arky OL coach and a former Arky OC under Bielema, maybe he wants to play power football?

He has a lot of talent at RB and good size on the OL. Plus, lots more talent available for Chaney than he had at UT, Arky, or Pitt. I think it's a good hire. If nothing else, he gets an experienced guy that will be value added to the staff processes.

I think it's more the style versus the results. UGA will have a lot better talent than UT, Arkansas and Pitt had.

I wonder if it is a case where going against him from a "chess match" stand point, if he saw something that made him want to hire him. Pure speculation on my point.

I remember when Richt hired Van Gorder. Richt was OC at FSU and they had played UCF where Van Gorder was the DC. Richt said that FSU was supposed to annihilate UCF, but BVG had a good game plan and FSU couldn't pull away until late in the game. Richt remembered that and when he got the head coaching gig at UGA he called Van Gorder and made him his DC.

Like I said, pure speculation, but I know for reasons like that is why Spurrier always wanted Bill Oliver. They loved going against one another.

Schottenheimer will not coach in Georgia’s bowl game

The news means no Mark Richt, Jeremy Pruitt or Schottenheimer for Georgia’s bowl game. And more spots could be vacated between now and then. Tight ends coach John Lilly, who called plays in last year’s bowl game for Georgia, would likely do so again – assuming he’s still around by then.

When the talent levels for his team, and the opposition, are on par with each other his offenses have been losing. They've been losing against bad teams.

I see a Chaney led offense for a Vol team that didn't average 10 points per game against a Kirby led defense. And I wonder what Kirby sees?

@Razorback Reverend will tell ya. When Bielema hired him at UArk I made no bones about it being a bad hire in my eyes. Now, at UGA, ... , just don't see this working. (not that it would bother me.)

Did you know ...

Since 2011 Bielema's has replaced 14 assistants on his staff.

-thought it was important to get the tandem as OC and OL coach
-on Chaney: likes his balance as a play caller, ability to create opportunities for his best athletes, ability to present DCs with multiple challenges, and personality was a good fit
-on Pittman: stressed importance of hiring a great coach at that position in the SEC; made a joke saying "and apparently his players love him."

In all, I think they are both good hires. To be fair, UT was a dumpster fire with coaching turnover, talent level, etc. But Chaney left it with a top 20 offense in 2012. All the way back to his time at Purdue, he did pretty well with a guy named Brees. At Arky, he had two top 30 rushing attacks, outpacing Bamas ground game each year. However, I'm not sure he and CBB'S philosophy meshed well. He's run spread and prostyle attacks. He likes the passing game, but seems to be the right balance that CKS is looking for. At pitt, i give him the benefit of the doubt given a first year change as OC, QB issues, and loss of their star RB. Still, they had a decent yr and played both ND and Iowa pretty well. At the end of the day though, and the article kind of gets at it, I think it is about the right person/right fit for the staff as it is anything else and smart seems pleased. Having coached against him for 6 years in the SEC, I'll give CKS the benefit of the doubt.

I'm beyond pessimistic with new coaches in the SEC with no track record. Well beyond it ...

FwIW: only 3 teams scored more than 14 against Bama in 2012. Bama D led the nation in scoring D that year.

Concur on being reserved with expectations of first job HCs, but no one would be a better judge of the quality of an OC'S ability to game plan and adjust than the opposing DC.

By no means do I think it's a home run hire, but it's not a bad one either imo.

Changing the subject a bit here:

Ty, going back to BYU, is certainly part of the "alumni pull." But, it's also part of the LDS pull. A few weeks ago I recall reading one of their requirements for their new coach is he's a member of the LDS. That just seems ... well, weird. (Where's the outcry about religious discrimination?) It just strikes me as odd in today's age.

Going even more off topic: Paxton Lynch threw me for a bit of a loop when he tweeted about transferring to BC with the closing comment, "the Power 5 Jesuit school" or something akin to that.
